Kia Hiang Restaurant – Mooncakes Packed with Tradition & Innovation
Isn’t the Mid-Autumn Festival colorful? Year after year, hotels and restaurants create new mooncake flavors quicker than you can say champagne truffle mooncake. It’s always fun to see what they whip up to please the diverse palates of Singaporeans. Kia Hiang Restaurant, in particular, have been the first to introduce several innovative and exciting mooncake flavors. Chocolate, durian purée and bak kwa (sweet barbecued pork) are just a few ingredients that have crept into the mooncakes... Read more →
Fish & Co – Seafood Sensation!
Back in my Junior College days when we didn’t have any money, gatherings with friends were limited to McDonald’s. Only on special occasions, like when it’s someone’s birthday, would we enjoy the rare treat of dining at places like Fish & Co. I remember there was once when a dozen of us crowded into the restaurant at Plaza Singapura. Shortly after sitting down to look at the menu, we had to make a rather embarrassing escape when we realised that we couldn’t afford... Read more →
Raffles Hotel Mooncakes 2009 – Have You Ordered Yours Yet?
Every Mid-Autumn Festival, I look forward to two things. One is the sight of children carrying lanterns and lighting candles at night. That innocent scene always brings back fond childhood memories. The other is the Raffles Hotel mooncakes. More specifically, the legendary snow-skin mooncakes with champagne truffle and ganache. It’s a big hit with the fans. The online orders for 2009 are already open. Have you ordered yours yet? Take note of the early bird, credit card and bulk order discounts!... Read more →

The lure of an attractively priced 3-course dinner packed with many goodies sure entices one to check out Hotel Re! This hotel is truly a hidden gem, with its location atop a hill. Drivers can take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary parking, whereas non-drivers can take the free shuttle bus service (or a leisurely trek up Pearl’s Hill). Swensen’s 1-for-1 Ice Cream & Dessert Buffet! [Ended]
Ever since Swensen’s introduced their 1-for-1 lunch promotion earlier this year, their restaurants are practically packed to the brim. It’s so popular that the promo has been extended to end August. Anyone else thinks that they are going to extend it a second time? Now, with the opening of their new outlet at Ion Orchard, they have rolled out another fabulous 1-for-1 deal: all-you-can-eat ice cream and dessert buffet at SGD18.90++! That comes up to around SGD11 for each person! Have... Read more →
Loong Fatt Tau Sar Piah – The Original Balestier Tau Sar Piah
They say imitation is a sign of flattery. You know you are successful when other people start emulating your idea. Just look at how the Ya Kun success story spawned numerous other air-conditioned shops also selling kopi and toast not only in Singapore but in Malaysia, too! It’s the same thing for tau sar piah. Along Balestier Road, you would find a whole stretch of dated shops all specialising in this flaky pastry with bean paste filling; I count at least five of them! Reminds me of the Selegie... Katrina – Love Mee!
So there I am, standing in the middle of the jam-packed Tampines Mall on a Saturday evening and checking out Katrina. The place looks nondescript and plain, and the menu seemingly ordinary. In my mind I’m thinking: people are eating here only because they are unwilling to brave the queues at the more popular restaurants. Succumbing to the hungry rumbling of my stomach, I venture in and order myself a bowl of Mee Rebus. And if I haven’t done that, I wouldn’t have tasted the best... Read more →
Where Do You Watch Live Soccer?
For such a soccer-crazy nation like ours, I find that many people do not know WHERE we can actually catch the game. Sure, we can watch the English Premier League (EPL) matches at home. Yet, the atmosphere of having other like-minded fans cheer and jeer along with you in a pub, with some chips and a beer in hand, is so much more awesome! Banana Leaf at Pub Street, Siem Reap, Cambodia This new season I am looking out for interesting places to watch soccer. Maybe even compile a list that fellow EPL... Read more →
Sentosa Club Islander – Weekend Brunch by the Beach
Back in my university days, Sentosa island was like my second home. A few times each week I would hit the beach for a sunbathing session. I even had that special islander pass that bestows upon its holder the power of unlimited queue-free access to the island. So while my course mates were dozing off in the air-conditioned lecture theaters, I was dozing off on a mat under the sun. Eventually I grew darker and less recognisable by my own friends and kin. My tanning regime had to end. These days, my... Read more →
Charco’s – Flaming Goodness!
For some reason, when an ang moh opens a Western food stall in the heartland, Singaporeans would throng the place. Maybe the food tastes more authentic. Or maybe the mental image of a sweaty ang moh preparing your steak makes it all the more appealing. I think it was the wildly popular Botak Jones that first started the craze. Then there’s crazy ang mo. More recently, an Australian guy started Charco’s the flaming chicken. Thanks to readers proud kitty Mommy and Ida who recommended Charco’s... Read more →
Ya Kun – Get Discounted Kopi and Toast!
Screw the French press. They’ve got the sock! Who am I talking about? Why, Ya Kun (亚坤), of course! If you frequent their air-conditioned coffee shops, you would no doubt be familiar with that funny slogan. Otherwise, you’re way too engrossed in the kopi and kaya toast. Photo by FatTireTribe:aannuar Personally, I do prefer traditional kopi to Western coffee. So I’m sharing with you the coupon that we’ve been using to get discounts off their drinks and food. Take advantage... Read more →
Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits – Mighty Good Fried Chicken!
Wanna feast on finger lickin’ good fried chicken? Well, you probably can’t get it at KFC these days. But I’ll tell you where you can. Popeyes! No, not the spinach-eating cartoon character. Not exactly. I’m referring to Popeyes, the world’s second largest fast food chain specialising in chicken! But hey, if we’re talking about food quality, Popeyes trumps its biggest competitor any day. Not only are the chicken and fries tastier and crispier, they are less oily,... Read more →
Grandma’s – Wonderful Family Restaurant
In Malaysia, I indulged in one of the best nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk) I’ve ever had in my life at madam kwan’s. Since then, I have been wondering if we can enjoy the same thing in Singapore. With some googling, I struck gold. Grandma’s at Orchard parade hotel serve the same dishes whipped up by chef yong, a former chef at madam kwan’s for 8 long years! The restaurant also falls under the akashi group, and is one that I would eventually visit and come to love. ... Read more →
Royce’ Nama Chocolate – Posh Nosh
It’s my birthday today! One of the gifts I received is this: Royce’ Nama chocolate! If you have ever tasted this chocolate before, you would know how truly awesome it is. Photo by kaoko My first experience with Royce’ was in ’06, when a friend specially couriered a small unassuming “care package” to me. It unraveled to reveal a slim box of Nama chocolates! I was hooked from the very first bite, and went on to label them as little pieces of heaven. They truly are!... Read more →
