Welcome to Sparklette Magazine. We bring you the scoop on sights and eats in Singapore, Asia and beyond.
My name is Veron Ang (pronounced like Veron in Veronica) and I founded Sparklette in early 2003. Here, you can read about the things I enjoy in life — dining, travel and technology.
This website started out as a hobby when I was doing my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at the National University of Singapore. Amazingly, the site rapidly grew in readership over the years. This has allowed me to leave my day job in 2009, hire a team of writers and make a living entirely from Sparklette and its web design arm, Sparklette Studio where we build websites and social media campaigns for companies all over the world.
I am thankful everyday for all the fulfilment I have gained from this site, and that is simply impossible without you (yes, that’s you reading this right now).
Thank you for allowing me to share part of my life on Sparklette. I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What camera do you use?
A: I get this question a lot! In the early years I started off with the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50. Currently I am using the Canon IXUS 870 IS. Both are highly compact digital cameras that serve me well and fit in my purse nicely.
Q: How big is Team Sparklette?
A: As the founder and editor of the site, I write most of the articles here. Melissa Koh and Jasper Aston Lim are two other writers on the team who do a great job in reviewing various restaurants in Singapore. Then there’s my talented friend, Michael Cheng, who helped build the Sparklette iPhone app.
Q: Do you use any special tools and equipment for Sparklette?
A: For editing photos, the computer I use is the Lenovo IdeaCentre B310, kindly sponsored by the company. It is a powerful machine that enables me to churn out photos and posts quickly. As for any other equipment… probably my Volkswagen New Beetle, which is not sponsored by the company. What can I say — it takes me places!
Q: Can I post your pictures on my website?
A: Unless indicated otherwise, all pictures on Sparklette are copyrighted. Please include a hyperlink to http://sparklette.net if you use any.
Q: Can you recommend a Chinese / Japanese / buffet / ________ restaurant?
A: Sure, I’ll try my best. But before you write to me, you may wish to mouse over the “Food & Drink” link above or do a search. That way, you get your answers in the quickest way!
Q: How much time do you spend on an article?
A: From processing the photos and planning the outline, to writing actual content and doing post editing, it takes me approximately 4 to 6 hours to complete an average article. That doesn’t include the actual meal time!
Q: What made you decide to start Sparklette?
A: I started blogging as a means of keeping a diary of my daily life and keeping in touch with friends. At the very beginning, it was purely for hobby’s sake and I loved (still do) tinkering with the design and layout of the site, along with writing new content and answering comments. Eventually it grew into a passion, and now I make a living online through Sparklette.
Q: Your site sucks! You’re too commercialised!
A: If you spend as much time as I do on this site, it becomes a full-time job. There is absolutely no way this site can be kept alive with fresh content without the support of advertisers.
Q: What does Sparklette even mean?
A: It is just a unique brand name :) I wanted something memorable and shimmery-sounding, and brainstormed from several words including “sparkles”. Eventually “Sparklette” was born.
Q: Why do your posts occasionally feature a white cat?
A: I’m a huge animal lover, and live with a lovely male Ragdoll cat who means the world to me. When I’m taking photographs of food products for review, Snowy would strut nonchalantly into frame. He does this every single time! If you spot a white fluffy cat in some of the pictures here, that’s him making his cameo appearances.
