A Brand New Number

whoa i lost 3 kilograms recently, which i was pretty darn happy about. but from the amount i’ve been eating over the past three days, i think i’ll gain back the weight in no time at all!

saturday was spent at plaza singapura. boy is that place crowded on weekends! it was so difficult finding a nice place for dinner as most of them were full house with snaking long queues. we ended up at swensen’s instead, where i had my crayfish pasta. sad to say, i actually prefer the one at pastamania!

by the way, has anyone been to the manhattan fish market? it looks like a fish & co. ripoff to me, but it does seem pretty popular. a couple other places i would like to go to are uber burger at millenia walk, and giraffe restaurant & bar near plaza singapura. if anyone has any feedback about these places, please let me know!

aussino was having some sale so i ended up with two spanking new bedsheet sets from there, one pink and one purple. and, and, this extra special bed canopy! there goes a large portion of my progress package payout. it’s my first time getting any form of government payout, since i only turned 21 quite recently.

i had always wanted some form of canopy over my bed, and this time i finally got it! although i initially wanted a four-poster canopy bed, i didn’t get that in the end. the next best thing is to have a ready-made canopy that hangs from the ceiling. i’m quite happy with it, although i have to say that sleeping with something over my bed does take some getting used to. when i told minyan about my new bed canopy, she commented that it would look quite ghostly. i really have to hand it to her! she has a knack at connecting almost everything to supernatural beings.

kevin and i are quite crazy over word dojo at the arcade. and we are getting pretty awesome at it too, hitting over 900K a few times. one of the arcade machines over at plaza singapura has our names filling up most of the high score chart. damn, i wish i took a photo of it! and i can’t wait to play the game again.

i really like the liqueur coffee over at tcc. i ordered a lamborghini coffee which i thought would come flambe but didn’t. nonetheless, it was pretty good. strong, but good. the rome coffee was pretty addictive too. coffee with a strong texture and slight tinge of alcohol. coffee lovers would definitely crave this.

there’s a flea market that opens at china square every sunday. i was there with chup on sunday. it was my first time there and i must say the places around there are quite confusing. there’s far east square, china square central, china square FOOD center, which are all different places but in the same vicinity. it gets quite confusing over there. i was over at the flea market to add on to my wanroom capsule collection. for those who might be curious, here’s what i have currently:

ain’t these adorable? i only just realised that each piece of furniture has both arms and legs as well! the flea market has quite a few stalls specialising in capsule toys.

in particular, i found a few toy sets that i like, such as the hello kitty casual time set that looks too cute…

and the doraemon set, which kicks ass because it has all the different rooms that doraemon fans would be familiar with. so you can sort of put them together to form nobita’s house or something.

but i won’t get them anyway. it would be an expensive hobby that i can’t afford currently. focussing on one particular series would be good enough and cost less. other interesting stuff that were sold at the flea market were these…

in particular, one shop was selling all kinds of vintage junk. any of these looks familiar?

groovy shades!

an old sewing machine.

later on, we came across one stall that sold care bear cousins, which are worth a lot because these are the rare retro edition. but they were going at quite a steal! i suspect the stallholder didn’t really know the value of these rare toys since her stall sold a wide plethora of items and didn’t specialise in toys. so needless to say, we haggled down the price and i got all the seven cousins they had. there goes another large portion of my progress package payout.

from left: lotsa heart elephant, playful heart monkey, loyal heart dog, brave heart lion, gentle heart lamb, cozy heart penguin, treat heart pig. another shop over there had a gigantic larger-than-life stuffed cheer bear. it was the largest care bear i had ever seen! right in front of my eyes! it was one meter tall easy! if it had looked to be in a better condition and less worn out, i would have gotten it in a heartbeat.

after the excitement had died down, we went to bugis junction for dinner. actually, we were supposed to go to the nearby national library to do work, and we even brought our laptops along. in the end we spent our time eating and shopping. dinner was at siam kitchen, which had their dinner buffet a la rice table style, going for $19.90.

just like the rice table indonesian restaurant, they would serve all their twenty dishes at one go, all in small portions so that we could sample each and every dish. it was the thai version of the rice table!

i especially liked the tom yum prawn soup, which was very sour and very spicy.

the green curry chicken didn’t appeal to me initially due to its icky color, but it tasted good nonetheless.

the spicy pomelo salad was one unique dish and was quite delightful on the tastebuds, although i wouldn’t exactly ask for a second serving.

the chicken satay was a huge letdown, with the one at the rice table faring much much better. the sauce was bland and the chicken was roasted to dryness.

then there’s the crispy fish fillet in a yummy sweet chili sauce which i really liked.

the stir fried prawns with red curry sauce was good too, except that we had to shell the prawns ourselves, a task which i absolutely hated. but it was good that i didn’t have to peel the prawns myself after all. anyway for our second prawn serving, i specifically told the hardworking waiter that we wanted peeled naked prawns. and he obliged!

overall, i still prefer the rice table over siam kitchen. i didn’t really care for the many salad dishes that siam kitchen offered. with prices to both buffets being similar, i would go for the rice table anytime! not anytime soon though, i really need to watch my diet.

another thing i have to watch is my expenditure. chup helped by giving me his cute little teddy bear coin bank that he got from bangkok. so all my spare change would go inside his tiny belly from now on.

dinner yesterday was at the beppu menkan japanese noodle restaurant at tiong bahru plaza. they serve spicy ramen where you get to indicate your chili rating from 1 to 10, 1 being the mildest and 10 being impossibly spicy. in the past i always went for a 4 which made me tear and my nose run everytime. so this time i opted for a 2 instead, which was already quite spicy.

Oniyama Jigoku (Crispy Fried Chicken with Ramen)
Price: $8.60
Dish rating:

as usual, i ordered the oniyama jigoku, or demon hill hell. it’s crispy fried chicken with some vegetables in the very spicy kyushu soup. one interesting thing we both noted about the place was that all the serving staff were chinese nationals, while the place itself was a japanese restaurant.

anyway, i have changed my mobile number to a “nicer” number that can be more easily memorised. most of my friends should have already gotten wind of my new number. this would be a good chance to purge certain nuisances and psychotic bastards out of my life completely.

a brand new number, a fresh new start, a spanking new beginning. i can’t wait!

    6. manhatten fish market’s cheaper than fish and co. i thought that the food was nicer. the portion’s a bit larger.

other than the food, the whole setting’s almost exactly similar to fish and co. View all comments by xxoos

    8. Well, you know the funny thing is they try so hard to replicate the authenticity of a fisherman’s wharfside diner…and end up looking rehashed, tired and old.

Swensen’s ice-cream is worth the green. Their set meals aren’t, period.

Wah so many pics…looks like you went for some 3-day food fiesta or something…makes me quite hungry looking at your pics haha

Oh you know that coin bank isn’t going to stop you from digging in and indulging in that soft toy that you want…all that stands between you and the money is….a hammer ;p

Doraemon seems happy at his new bear friend, though.

"Psychotic" huh? That’s a pretty strong word. Don’t you feel honoured that you’re being stalked like some hollywood celebs out there? Even our very own mediacorp artistes don’t get that anytime.

Haha just joking….tomorrow’s thursday….BJ & Tyler go! Hope they yield that nasty mojo. View all comments by harrison

    11. thanks xxoos for the feedback. i thought the menu at the manhattan fish market looked pretty identical to fish & co’s. i was wondering why every time i passed by that place, the queue was always so long! i’m gonna dine there some day just to see how the food really is. 12. Hey harrison, I fully agree on the overall look of the Manhattan Fish Market. It didn’t look unique or authentic to me. and if i were to go there, it would just be for the food, not the ambience.

Swensen’s ice cream is good, but I really have to watch my weight. Their a la carte meals aren’t very impressive though I do have a few favorites, such as the chili fish pasta and possibly their chicken baked rice. I guess they are still primarily known for their desserts.

The new coin bank wouldn’t be opened until it is full, that’s my resolution. Doraemon always looks so happy, but ever since the little bear came along, his grin seems wider. Haha!

I hope BJ & Tyler wins the Amazing Race! They are the only team that hasn’t annoyed the hell out of me. Team Mojo sucks, period. Eric & Jeremy have to comment on the women whichever country they go to, and all their comments disgust me. The Franberries just seem so blind, with their walking past clue boxes in plain sight several times. They seem to always flunk at visual tasks! Ray & Yolanda seem the best team on paper, but just aren’t good racers or navigators. Too bad for them.

BJ & Tyler are such goofballs, yet bring such a positive and delightful spirit to the show. I’m rooting for them all the way! View all comments by Veron

    13. yo chup, don’t worry i won’t break your precious teddy coin bank. i think the cathay pacific pilot bear at the back always looks so gloomy, as with all teddy bears. it’s their trick to earn hugs from people! View all comments by Veron

    15. Breaking the teddy’s neck, eh? That’s less cruel. Kind of.

I just love BJ & Tyler too! Mojo really got me irritated with their whining and being so mean as to not only refuse money to BJ & Tyler but to badmouth them too. They don’t like happy people.

Haha the bohemian buds provide the best laughs! Remember the "list" they drew up in Sicily? Almost fooled the frat boys!

    16. LOL harrison, that DOES sound like Phil! Of course I think the weight loss was due to stress more than anything else. And I sense myself putting on the pounds again.

The check-in list that BJ & Tyler did was pretty funny! "It says ‘Official’ on it". What’s most unforgettable is BJ’s awesome impersonation of his fallen counterparts on the bus, especially the one of Lake. "We’re partners, partners okay?" Hilarious! View all comments by Veron

    17. Oh that bus trip! Haha they were so upbeat even though they were in last place. Or the time they were running backwards to the mat, and the frog hat when BJ was piggybacking Tyler! Haha

You could try sticking those glow in the dark stars (small ones) on your ceiling above your canopy…like that have the dreamy, twinkly night sky feeling…your canopy is the wispy veil that separates between you and the infinite sky,

Or those that reflect light, if your window is open and there’s some moonlight, that could work!
