courtesy of the SMU gourmet club, i went on a food-tasting session over the weekend. it was a day filled with sweet and savory delights! well, calories too. we had to jet from place to place but it’s okay — everyone was pumped high on sugary goodness!
the first venue of the day was blue magnolia along macpherson road. it’s a petite little cafe with 80 percent of its space utilised as the kitchen, and the remaining 20 percent for dining customers.
blue magnolia sells freshly baked cakes and cookies under the product line of d’gourmetco. recently, they are also seeking a slice of the crępes market, offering diners a range of delightful crępes with a large choice of fillings. but cakes are still their main draw!

the classic new york cheesecake is one crowd pleaser! some customers even proclaim this to be equivalent to hilton hotel’s famous cheesecake, said to be the best cheesecake in town! whoa! it’s yummy alright — creamy and dreamy, rich and light at the same time!

for those of you that have more of a sweet tooth for chocolate (like i do), you can indulge in their signature chocolate cake. note that both cakes are sold at very reasonable prices! even mini cakes like these ones below are sold at just $1.60 to $2 apiece.

pretty cakes! these are made in cute bite-sized quantities so that you get to sample a bit of everything. don’t they look quaint? my personal favorite is the rocky road, which has a soft layer of mini marshmallows drizzled with chocolate syrup, atop another layer of rich chocolate brownie. if that’s not the ultimate comfort food, i don’t know what is.

if you’re wondering how the “blue” in “blue magnolia” came about (since magnolia flowers are hardly blue), here’s the answer. blue happens to be the favorite color of denny, the owner of blue magnolia. all cakes are packaged in cute boxes like this, colored in his favorite blue and white.

doesn’t that look sweet? customers are encouraged to place their orders 3 days in advance to ensure that their cakes would be freshly baked in time! if you’re looking to order cakes for an upcoming celebration, or just to indulge in on a nice sunday afternoon, you now have another option!

Hey Veron! Your favourite little cake is the Rocky Road too?
Isn’t it amazing to have the soft white marshmallows to melt in your mouth while you’re chewing onto the moist dense brownie?

Looking at this after lunch… can sure do with a nice cheese cake now. :D Although i love chocolate… but when it comes to cheesecake, i prefer it plain - in all its unadulterated creamy goodness. Ooo… i love cheese.
Hey wait! Its near my office! Hmm… *rubs fingers* View all comments by Miccheng

You are right! Those pictures were wonderfully taken, making the cakes look yummier than ever. I feel like I need to hire my own personal food photographer! View all comments by Veron
Blue Magnolia? hmmmm…. i dont reckon their cakes are good at all… I’ve tasted them. it’s just ordinary predictable everyday cakes unlike some really good players like Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie & Bakerzin. That’s what I call gourmet.
cheers! View all comments by anjelica
just wan 2 add to those reading tis blog dat I’ve recently ordered d chocolate cake for my daughter’s bdae. denny obliged to put in a layer of crust at the bottom of the cake [addtl cost]. it was a delicious outcome, no regrets. i dare differ anjelica that bluemag is ‘predictable’ & ‘everyday’… View all comments by joan

does any1 know the exact location of this shop? View all comments by vivien
for vivien : the shop is located along MacPherson Road, about 100m away from Hotel Winsor. Thai is if you are in the direction towards Old Airport Road or Paya Lebar Road. Hope you will find it & enjoy their cakes. View all comments by joan
joan: Thanks!
vivien: Joan’s directions should be clear enough. But in case they aren’t, do try to look out for a striking baby blue shade over the shop front. It’s one of those shops along the main road. View all comments by Veron
i think they sucks. they should just shut down. View all comments by anjelica
Responding to Anjelica’s comment :
One Man’s Meat may B Another’s Poison.
So I really think U shld leave such blunt remarks in your closet.
On another note, I doubt a person with such a ‘knife-cut’ remark can really appreciate the delicate taste offered @BluMag. They may not serve the best cakes in town, but they dun deserve to be asked to shut down. View all comments by Joan
