Chippy British Take Away - Takes Your Breath Away

okay okay, i know i’m a little late in this. this was only my first time eating from chippy british take away. i was window shopping at raffles city, got hungry, and wanted to sit down at a nice restaurant for some sumptuous dinner. but this brightly lit red little booth caught my eye.

Chippy British Take Away

it’s chippy british take away! with that striking union jack, the cheery name, and so many sinful treats such as fried mars bars and beer-battered fish, tell me, how could i resist?

the food is seriously dirt cheap. i did a double take when i found that the yummy-sounding cheesy curry chicken cost just $3.45! was the portion small? not at all! chippy promised 35 (or was it 45) pieces of chicken and definitely did not scringe on the portion.

so i asked for “extra spicy chicken”, paid my $3.45, watched the crew deep-fry my chicken pieces right in front of me and waited eagerly for the chicken to be ready. i got real worried when i saw how oily it was. this was definitely not meant for everyday consumption!

but boy was it good. it was lip-smackingly good! the food was cooked only upon each order placed, which explains why the chicken was still hot and crispy and packed with spices. as if that wasn’t enough, the little tub of cheese dip that came along was perfect for the chicken. it had a sweet and sour now-you-taste-it-now-you-don’t quality to it. rather intriguing! man, just thinking about the chicken makes me salivate already.

Photo montage mural

even though this place is meant for take-aways, they do have some standing and sitting space reserved for customers. i like the colorful photo montage mural that decorated one side of the wall. i like the fact that the prices are cheap and the food is so yummilicious. basically i like everything about the place! chippy has totally won me over!

gonna try out a couple of those fried mars bars next time!

    1. Oh wow, that sounds delicious. At least, everything except the fried mars bars. Seriously, how in the world is -THAT- done? If you try them, you definitely have to blog and give me the low down on those. View all comments by Mandy

    2. Haha I do agree the fried mars bars sounds pretty weird. It’s a fad started off by the Scottish I think… Not too sure about that. But it sure looks like one sinful, calorie filled, artery clogging piece of snack that’s also supremely delicious - i heard it comes with ice cream! I want one! View all comments by Veron

    3. Heheh, when I used to live in Sydney from 2001-2004, I would sometimes go to Bondi Beach (where the 2000 Olympics Beach Volleyball events were held).

I can clearly remember my first deep-fried Mars bar experience at Bondi Beach. It’s a local speciality there, with stars like Keanu Reeves etc hanging out in some of the bars there regularly. It was absolutely delicious, with the batter giving it an almost crunchy/peanut-buttery texture (I swear that’s the closest way I can describe it). It’s like a super soft ‘goreng pisang’ just oozing with hot caramel. They also cost around A$3 for a normal-sized (not even King-sized) bar in Australia.

I will definitely find this place and hit it up quickfast, although not too often, or my gf is gonna complain something shocking! :) View all comments by Kyo

    4. *drools* The cheesy curry checiken sounds really delicious. I’ll make sure I try it when I go to City Hall the next time! And seriously, the price is far too cheap. Kind of shocking to see that actually.

As for fried mars bar, I think I’ll most probably die from a bad sore throat if I ever eat it. Haha. View all comments by Lain

    5. Haha Kyo you’d better not eat too many of those! They sound (and look) real fattening. But the way you describe the mars bar… ooooh I wanna have it right now!

Hey if you do try out the Chippy version, let me know if it’s good!

    6. Lain, there’s actually another Chippy at Far East Plaza Level One (I hope it’s still there!). Yeah the chicken’s real cheap! But definitely not for everyday consumption. I think two portions of it would be enough to induce a sore throat. View all comments by Veron

    7. The fried mars bar isn’t that good, but you’ve got to try the cheese sausage! And yep the Far East one is still around(: View all comments by ling.
