the dragon boat festival (端午节) may be long over, rice dumplings (粽子) still remain my current favorite food. for the past one month or so i have been eating myself fat with all these dumplings — and i don’t even care! over at my place it’s dumpling festival everyday.
for the less informed, rice dumplings are cute little pyramids made of glutinous rice (a.k.a. sticky rice) and wrapped in dried bamboo or pandan leaves. stuffed within the rice is a savory filling that may be salted egg yolk, mushroom, chestnut, pork, chicken, et cetera.
my favorite is the nonya variety that has a marinated minced pork filling. the daun pandan rice dumpling franchise sells the best dumplings in town. my dad buys a few of these from the toa payoh branch each time. seriously, their sweet pork filling is second to none.
most days after work i am too exhausted to cook or even buy dinner. each of these dumplings are amply portioned. they don’t even need to be prepared or cooked, just steamed. perfect for filling an empty stomach!

Rice dumplings! I love the ones with chicken fillings in particular. :D I’ll try the one you recommended if I ever happen to drop by Toa Payoh! :) View all comments by Lain
Daun’s dumplings are great! They have several branches across the island, not just in Toa Payoh. View all comments by Veron
When I eat those, they are call sticky rice in the US. I like the chicken filling, however I hate it when they have those dry eggs in it. View all comments by cynthia
I am surprised that there are rice dumplings in the US! Are those sold at Chinese restaurants? View all comments by Veron
They are more likely to be sold in chinese groceries than resturants. I normally get them from my mother in law, cause she knows how to make it. View all comments by cynthia
Hey it would be great if you could provide a photo of the dumplings. I’m curious as to whether they look the same as Singapore’s. View all comments by Veron
sure I will provide you a pic. I hope I still have some left at home. View all comments by cynthia
Anyone know where to purchase the daun pandan leaves that were used to make nonya dumpling?
Appreciated that location is essential.
Thanks. View all comments by Richard Yeong
Yumm…those rice dumplings look most heavenly… =) I’m starting to feel a bit hungry now haha xD When we pass by a small bakery here where i live, they sell some sticky rice dumplings without filling.I find that the best part in eating them is the chewing part :) I love trying to bite off a piece of chewy food.Somehow,i find it amusing. And of course, last but not least, getting it in your tummy! And continuing to eat some more even though your stomach’s been telling you it’s been full for quite some time now.
B.t.w,i love your layout! It is truly very calming and charming,as you meant for it to be :]
Keep up the great work!^^ View all comments by Jejo
