DIY Noticeboard

for those of you that are familiar with the o.c. tv series, you would probably agree with me that summer has the prettiest room that any girl can possibly dream of. i happened to notice her board which is adorned with all sorts of cool magazine cut outs.

Summer's noticeboard

i wanted a similar board for my room where i can pin stuff up. it would keep me organised because i tend to have bits of paper and notes that i want to keep but they don’t seem to belong anywhere. so yesterday afternoon i set out to recreate the same board for my room DIY style, using only recycled materials from start to finish.

if you are interested in having something similar but are too cheap to spend any money (like i am), have the following things ready:

  • frame
  • fabric of your preferred color or design
  • masking tape
  • scissors
  • decorative stuff such as beads (put those old necklaces to use!) and flowers
  • cool magazines
  • paper clips, pins, pegs
  • a 3M hook, or a nail for those who like drilling holes

at this point you might ask, why not just go out and get one of those cheap corkboards from ikea? see the thing is, i didn’t want just any regular ol’ storebought corkboard that everybody has in their room. it had to be pretty in pink! so i got out an old picture frame of a jigsaw puzzle (featuring big ben) that was collecting dust. the frame was silver and looked nice against my lilac walls.

Old picture frame

next, i found a piece of pink fabric to be used as the background. it’s actually an old pillow cover that was slightly larger than the picture. perfect!

Pink fabric

using masking tape, i taped the fabric over the picture and fitted it snugly back into the frame.

Pink fabric taped over picture

with a 3M hook affixed to the wall… voila! a brand new pink noticeboard!

3M hook and finished noticeboard

then the real work (or fun) begins. all sorts of stuff can be pinned onto the board. photos, doodles, song lyrics, invitation cards, post-it notes, mobile phone promotions, drawings, poems, restaurant promotions, fashion cut outs, postcards, namecards, travel brochures… the possibilities are endless!

i also hanged decorative beads for good measure. in time to come i hope to add a small magnetic whiteboard where i can write notes on with a marker.

My DIY noticeboard

overall i am very happy with the end result! a funky addition to my room that costs next to nothing! it’s perfect for hostel rooms as well. my only gripe is that the board is too small for all my stuff. eventually i would have to switch to a bigger board, and substitute nails for the 3M hook. but until then this should suffice.

    3. gahh. my jaw actually dropped while looking at the instructions and the final product. beautiful!

hopefully you would find a matching whiteboard soon, but somehow i always preferred chalkboard! haha.

how i wish i could have something like that too, but i’m never allowed to hang anything on the wall. *sigh* View all comments by Lain

    4. i like the idea of having a mini chalkboard - it somehow evokes feelings of nostalgia! but whiteboards seem cleaner and definitely less dusty, hence my preferred choice! oh plus the fact that i do have a mini whiteboard already :) View all comments by Veron
