Eye Operation

that’s right, i went for the eye operation this morning. went there with only two hours of sleep behind me, and i was the first patient in tow. the whole operation was bloody, bloody. any photos that were taken would have been worthy of rotten.com. below are the gruesome details of the operation…

1. doctor applies numbing eyedrops to my left eye.

doctor then leaves to tend to other patients. busy, busy. she finally comes back about 20 minutes later to give me my injections.

2. she injects anesthetic right on my eyelid. it was very painful. i realised the numbing agent had already worn off after the 20 minutes’ wait. you would think it’s a tiny needle prick, but it was more of a very large prick that lasted about 10 seconds.

from this point onwards, all the work is done with my eyelid flipped inside out, on the inside of my eyelid.

3. then comes the part where she needs to inject on the underside of my eyelid. so she flips my eyelid inside out, and tries to inject on the cyst. the needle couldn’t go in cos the cyst was too hard. so… she went to get a BIGGER needle. waaaaaaaaaa!

4. BIG needle comes along. the doctor flips my eyelid inside out again, then beckons her assistant over to hold my eyelid in place while she injects the cyst with the BIG needle. mind numbing pain at this point. i have thoughts about chickening out and running home to my sweet bed, but i wonder “how can it get more painful than this? the anesthetic has already been injected”.

my mind gets groggy from the lack of sleep, the pain, and the fact that i have two people doing weird stuff to my eye, which is the most sensitive part of my body.

5. doctor cuts the cyst open with a blade. the anesthetic doesn’t really work, because i feel the pain anyway.

the assistant becomes bloody annoying. she keeps bending over to try to get a better view or something, and at certain points she just leans on my body. but the pain keeps me from getting real pissed off.

6. now comes the worst, as well as the bloodiest part of the whole process. with the cyst cut open, the doctor proceeds to scrape all the crap out of the cyst. i have no idea what she scrapes out… don’t give a damn either. the pain is excruciating. imagine those movies where they have people trying to get bullets out of their wounds with a sharp knife in a DIY way. kinda the same thing here, except that the bullet, once located, comes out in a second. the cyst-scraping takes up a full long three minutes. i can feel every bit of the scraping. i wish i was unconscious.

7. all done. doctor hands me a mirror and i see that my left eye is all red and puffy. she applies some gel right into my eye, then patches it up nicely with bandage after i do some serious blinking.

the whole thing was a bloody affair. i saw a lot of gauze all stained in fresh blood after all was done. she said the bandage could be removed when i reached home, and gave me the gel to apply into my eye, some disinfecting eyedrops, and painkillers. it cost 68 bucks altogether, plus another 14 for consultation.

it’s not too bad. when i got home and removed the bandage, my eye seemed normal already, except with a little swelling at the lid. and after i had some sleep, it looked as good as new. so if anyone needs anything removed, visit kao & tan clinic opposite tiong bahru plaza. it’s open from 7am to 12 midnight, and the doctors there are highly professional with certification in dermatology. it was a huge relief that everything went on well.

the doctor said the cyst could probably have grown due to improper eye makeup removal. and such eye cysts are quite common in females. but i don’t know… i have always taken great care in cleaning away my makeup. so it should have been something else or plain rotten luck. kinda worried that it may happen again. the next time i have to go for a similar operation, i would make sure i consume lots of alcoholic stuff before going. local anesthetic hardly ever works enough.

    1. i know exactly how painful it is to have a needle on the eyelid, cos i’ve experienced it before. if i’m not wrong… to actually anathesize the entire eye area.. it takes about 12 injections all around plus 3 on the eyelid itself to entirely numb the area.

well there’s alot of blood after all cos so much fresh blood flows in the arteries throughout the head area. in the meantime, have a speedy speedy recovery. View all comments by alwyn

    2. yay at least someone understands my pain. i would rather have ten injections on my arm than a single injection on my eyelid. so bloody painful!

bad news is, the cyst isn’t completely gone. there’s still a tiny bump but far less visible than before. the doctor said it contains nerve fibre or something and can’t be gotten rid of, although it should disappear on its own within the next few weeks. i’m quite skeptical. it feels hard and i doubt it would just go away by itself. 6. Hihi, I found your site a while back and been following you since, I’mma quiet stalker :P

omigoodness, that sounds so naaassttyyy. when I think of how that pain in your eyeball must’ve felt, I imagine an uber icecream headache and add some.

I had some teeth filled recently and the numbing stuff they gave me worked fine, but wasn’t strong enough. I could feel the drilling and pain all up in my head and jaw.

anyways, good luck with that. View all comments by Mandy

    8. hi mandy, good to see you here!

sorry to hear that you had to go for the painful teeth filling procedure. i kinda think any of these operations done above the neck would be 10x more painful than elsewhere on the body… maybe because it’s located nearer to the brain? *LOL*

the eye operation was no joke. i wouldn’t want to go through it ever again, even if i had to:determined:. View all comments by Veron

    9. Just found and read your story about eyelid scraping due to a cyst. My wife is just waiting to get a call to tell her to go for the same operation anytime now and cos she’s worried about it I thought I’d see if I could find anything on the net about the op. Maybe hoping that I could ease her worries but your factual account of your experience doesn’t bode well for her. Needless (xcuse the pun) to say, I won’t be telling her the details of your op. - I think it’s best if she just goes for it - fingers crossed.

    10. Thanks so much for posting this story. I have had this problem for years now,… and the cyst rubbing on my pupil/iris is really painful. I’m so glad that you’ve written all the details of the procedure. Am thinking this has contrubuted to my Insomnia. It sounds like it might have helped your sleep, considering you fell asleep after the procedure. View all comments by Andrea

    12. Well folks at the begining of the year i had a cyst on my lower eye lid ,it wasn’t that big but had it removed none the less ,and all was well for a few months then on my upper eye lid i could see another one but it was tiny its now August and its now the size of a pea ,so i went to the doctors ,and she did not even look at it she just said oh its just another cyst ….i was like oh just another cyst but its bigger this time and if i get this one cut out will it come back somwere else ,she said yeah it might you might be prone to them now …… so i am like oh great .the thing is its more a vanity thing on your lower lid ,but when its on your upper lid it makes my lid droop when i am tired which means i am going to have to get it removed ,or scraped out …so my advice if its small and not causeing any problem leave it as it only opens a can of worms if you have it removed.but if its on the upper lid well you have no choice in the matter as it affects your eyesight ….just remember that it can come back they only tell you this once they have removed …and they are not sore just a bit of a pain to get the removed View all comments by melv

    13. heya, i typed “eye cyst” in yahoo, happened to see ur site there.. haa.. gosh, its my 4th time having this stupid thing.. I’m a “regular patient” (for cyst). its like having a mini ball above my eye lid, makes me really don’t feel like goin out or even looking at the mirror man.. I cried after every operation.. haa. GiRLs lah~ But am lucky that it grow on the eye lid, not inside of the eye lid.. gosh.. compared to my cousin, well, he had 9(or more!) cuts since young(i think he’s pri1 now) worst right? Anyway, avoid heaty foods.. and eye make up removal.. very important!!! you can buy eye wash/bath.. after make-up remover, tab some on cotton wool, then eye wash.. well, better to be safe than sorry!! we’re jus unlucky~ =((( View all comments by Jade

    15. Crap! I just got back from the dermatologist all relieved because this thing on my eyelid is a cyst, not a tumor… but cysts don’t sound so fun now! The Dr put liquid nitrogen on mine and told me to use warm compresses… see a dr. again if that doesn’t make it go away. It better go away! Thanks for the gruesome details - at least I know what to expect if I have to go back to the Dr. View all comments by Lynne
