Hong Kong (Day 1)

Sponsored links

had a lot of trouble falling asleep last night. i slept a grand total of just one hour, and spent the rest of it chatting online and waiting for kevin to come pick me up at 5am. i must say he was very kind to have done so, especially since he slept about as little as i did, and had work today.

we reached the airport super early and went for breakfast at burger king. by then i was starting to feel tired and was wondering how i could make it through the rest of the day. anyway we had coffee later on, the first of many caffeine dosages to come.

and i checked in hoping to be bumped up to business class by cathay pacific. no such luck! the moment i saw the people at the check-in counters, i knew it wasn’t happening. they were all female and looked to be in bad mood. the people who bumped me up to business class previously were all happy-looking gentlemen. so yeah i was stuck in economy class after all.

got some of my origins facial stuff at lower airport prices, so yay for that! on the plane the flight attendant made sure i got my low-calorie meal. something with egg white, eggplant, and asparagus. just take one look at the picture and you would know it didn’t taste good. now why the heck did i ever specify i want a low-calorie meal?

and the seats were bloody cramped. i had to sit next to these two chinese-speaking singaporean women, where one of them couldn’t stop complaining about her husband. (and she kept peeking over at my laptop to see what i was typing. i was blogging this at the same time.) oh yeah i was also seated right behind this huge dude. everytime he shifted in his seat (which he did a lot), the coffee on my table threatened to spill over.

(okay everything up to this point was blogged on the plane in notepad. i was bored and hence the long-windedness. i really ought to count my blessings too. a lot of things could have gone wrong, but they didn’t.)

when the plane reached hong kong, it was freaking raining! i was quite disappointed. somehow the summer season i had pictured in my mind was all sunny and dry. i didn’t think it would rain. and it continued to rain for the rest of the day. it would rain for ten minutes, then stop for ten minutes, and rain for another ten minutes, and the cycle repeats itself. my plan was to go visit the peak, and that had to be scrapped.

i got a nice hotel room though, at le meridien. the room is super clean and i don’t think i would have any trouble falling asleep at night. it’s on one of the higher levels although sadly there isn’t much of a view.

still, i’m quite happy with it. the coolest part of the room has got to be the shower. it’s all glass so people in the room would be able to see you showering. how kinky! i like it because when i’m showering, i can look at my laptop from where i am, and see if anyone has sent me a message.

and of course, there’s the plasma tv and free internet access. i flew into frenzy this afternoon when i couldn’t get connected. but managed to fix it in the end.

strawberries and tea…

that’s about it. couldn’t go to the peak today and the rain seriously spoiled my mood. i decided to go check out causeway bay and do some shopping. it was friday evening so the area was very crowded. and yeah hong kongers walk fast alright. they also tend to be good looking too.

(shall keep my blog brief because i’m so tired.)

so it was street after street of shopping centers and i couldn’t even keep track of all their names. most of the smaller ones looked similar. many neon signs and colorful signboards too.

and there’s world trade center which looked quite striking.

there were also a lot of people crowding around this pet shop in a street corner that sold puppies. it was the only pet shop i had seen so far.

for dinner i didn’t have much of a choice since every other place was super crowded and people were forming long queues everywhere. i ate at this UCC coffee place inside sogo. coffee plus chocolate french toast.

then the rain came AGAIN when i was hitting the streets. i noticed hong kongers all carry umbrellas with them. i had to seek shelter at timesquare. it’s a huge shopping mall with pretty much the exact same brands you find in singapore. after today i don’t understand why people find shopping so great in hong kong when it’s all similar stuff and the prices don’t even have a big difference. anyway there was a denim jeans exhibition going on at timesquare which i thought was quite cool. they had faces of famous people painted on the jeans.

leonardo da vinci.

sun yat-sen.

bruce lee.

that was it for today. i had walked for hours and it was exhausting. came back to the hotel and took a nice shower. shopping at causeway bay was a real disappointment because it’s exactly like another singapore. at the end of the day i only got this precious moment musical ornament for my room…

…and this diamante gourd pendant i had always wanted.

didn’t have to spend much money, which i guess is a good thing. i think i’m better off using it to visit attractions. i only pray that it doesn’t rain anymore and it’ll be a more fruitful day tomorrow.

  7. hi there, was surfing through and i thought i would like to ask - how much did you spent on your entire trip & was the accomodation expensive? because i went about a year back and i got a nasty street hotel which was uber cramped and certainly has no view like yours.

im planning to go back hk again, probably alone or with my bf. i love that place:)) View all comments by laura

  8. Hi, I am so impressed by your website. It was so nicely created and I simply love it!.

The last time I travelled to Hong Kong was 1997. I am planning to go again this yr with my hubby & 2 kids. The problem I am facing now is that I am unsure whether to travel free & easy or with package. Its is not cheap to travel in December and I am searching for cheaper airline & accomodation. Will also do some research on where to go and your website helped me a lot! Good work! View all comments by Yvonne
