I’m Employed!

today marks my first day at celestica. my friend allan asked me only yesterday afternoon if i wanted to work for him as his personal assistant (PA). his current PA was leaving her job today, and i could fill in for her temporarily while looking for a permanent job at the same time. sounds good to me!

the job would involve some basic administrative work, reading email, doing management reports, et cetera. it was only until then that i realise he’s actually the director of the company!

even though i didn’t intend to start working so soon, i was pretty happy with the salary and thought the job sounded pretty easy. moreover i would be earning some real cash while looking for a more permanent job at the same time. and working for someone i know can be a plus factor.

some drawbacks though. my workplace is in woodlands and quite a long walking distance away from the MRT station. i would have no employee benefits as i am just a temporary employee, although i would still be entitled to my CPF.

my celestica employee pass

on the positive side, i got my employee pass today! the human resources department was quite efficient. my picture was taken only in the morning, and by the afternoon, i had received my pass. my computer terminal is internet-enabled, and there’s msn messenger! but i probably won’t be able to do much as the work seems quite busy, and i’m sitting right in front of allan, who would have a super clear view of what i’m doing.

the office hours take some getting used to. i would be working mondays to fridays, 8:30am to 6:00pm. for someone who’s so accustomed to keeping late hours, having to wake up at 6-ish in the morning is pretty tough! for my first day at work today, i barely had four hours of sleep behind me!

but well it was his assistant’s last day today, which was why i had to start my first day today so that she could hand over her duties.

from tomorrow onwards i would be totally on my own. wish me good luck!

    5. Wow you even sound deadbeat from your words….have a good night’s sleep, ok?

Be careful of clerk work…people always think it’s easy so they delegate non-admin stuff to you also, so don’t be bullied and stand up to them! In a non-confrontational way of course.

Maybe it would be good not to show the other employees you are somehow "affliated" to allan…otherwise you know, the preferential treatment thing…office politics can get pretty ugly.

At least after a hard day’s work you have the right to say……….

    7. Hey harrison, thanks for the heads-up! So far so good. Nobody has tried to bully me yet. I think the previous assistant did a good job at taming the people. After all, she’s been at this position for more than five years already.

My co-workers mostly assume I am a permanent employee hired to replace Allan’s assistant. I hope that rumors won’t fly when he returns though. It is a largely female environment here so I think gossip is inevitable. View all comments by Veron

    9. welcome to the woodlands community. :)

if you have a chance, you can try out the Zi Char stall at Blk 834 coffeeshop.

I find their food rather tasty. Perhaps you can put some photos on your blog and give them a review… :D View all comments by old tchs boy

    10. haha old TCHS boy, where is this zi char stall? i’m too lazy to look it up. let me know if it’s anywhere within the vicinity of celestica. the building is very much visible from woodlands mrt station. View all comments by Veron
