it was already dark when i left the office. the air in the building smelled different, and i knew that the air conditioning had been switched off long ago. even the security guard had gone back home.
as i walked down the corridor i traced my reflection in the dark glass panels forming one side of the building. everything else was still. in the veil of silence around my flip-flops on the staircase seemed almost deafening.
tonight, the sky was an eerie shade of puce. soon as i exited the building, i felt as though i had walked into a thick pall of smoke. the haze was so bad and the smoke odor so strong, for a moment i thought the forest across the road was burning. i didn’t have to think twice as i quickened my footsteps toward the bus stop.
i would usually take a bus from there and then walk the rest of the way home. but tonight the haze threatened to choke so i broke out of my usual routine and took two buses instead.
but the damage has been done. with the combination of insufficient sleep, eating heaty food daily, stress, and finally the lethal cloak of haze i thrashed through, i now have a sore throat. bummer.
i hope this thing clears up in the morning.
