McDonald’s Wasabi Filet-O-Fish - A Karai Sensation

Sponsored links

do you like eating spicy food? spicy food can probably be classified into two categories: the sinus-clearing wasabi-spicy or the tongue-burning chili-spicy. which do you prefer? for me, i certainly love both!

if you have passed by the golden arches recently, you may have noticed their new wasabi range of filet-o-fish and shaker fries. the restaurant promises it would give you a “karai sensation”. so far, these wasabi items appear to be available only in mcdonald’s singapore.

but wait a minute, wasabi on a battered fish patty? wouldn’t that taste kind of… weird? well, curiosity and my love for wasabi got the better of me! for $4.10 i got a wasabi filet-o-fish, complete with a brand new lime green sticker that screams “wasabi” pasted on the box.

the burger retains the same fish filet, veggies and cheese, with the newly-added wasabi in the form of wasabi-flavored mayonnaise. okay, so that may not be the most beautiful burger in the world. but we’re not paying for food presentation here, are we?

what surprises me is that the wasabi is actually nostril-searing hot! i would expect to get just a slight tinge of wasabi, and that’s it. but this one really gives you that kick! i had tears in my eyes! the pastel green sauce looks and tastes pretty much similar to the wasabi mayo prawns that have swam their way into many posh restaurants here in the past couple of years. oishii!

so, if you love wasabi like i do, do give this one a try. if it’s like their previous specialty burgers such as the black pepper burger, rice burgers, or the kampong burger that i miss so much, this one would probably be here for just a limited time period.

i have yet to try the wasabi shaker fries. the thought of mixing wasabi in the form of a sachet of powder just doesn’t sound too appealing to me. let me know if it’s any good. i might change my mind!

  1. The big M bundled some wasabi powder to go along with my fries the last time I got a value meal. It wasn’t searing hot, but the taste of wasabi is definitely there. View all comments by pkchukiss

  2. yupp.. i agree. tried the wasabi shaker fries. it’s wasn’t spicy or anything. would have to say i was quite disappointed by it as i expected it to a full on assault. and the powder isn’t salty like their previous efforts. View all comments by Jeff

  3. skip the fries. the wasabi taste is almost non-existent and powder is very sweet. not worth it. View all comments by absolutjoiz

  5. pkchukiss, Jeff & absolutjoiz: Thanks for sharing! Looks like I’m gonna give the shaker fries a pass. I never really liked the “shaker” concept anyway. Besides, I’m one of those people that must have my fries with chili sauce.

wweijiee: Glad to be of help! I have heard rather extreme reactions to this burger. It’s one of those you-either-love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing :) Like durian! View all comments by Veron

  6. Thanks for this review, I have seen this burger on sale, and was hesitant to try it, because the thought of a wasabi fish-O-Filet makes me a little skeptical if it would be nice in the first place. View all comments by py

  9. Huh! You mean they discontinued the garlic chili sauce? I never noticed that. So are they using the regular chili sauce with the white packaging (and a bright red chili on it)? View all comments by Veron
