Muthu’s Curry - Curry for the Soul

a friend once told me that having an indian meal is like a feast for all your senses. not only does it consist of rich flavors that you can both smell and taste, indian cuisine is also a multitude of vibrant colors with the various gravies and curries. and then, you would eat it with your hands while listening to indian music playing in the background, right? boy, i love indian food!

of the numerous times i have circled round the fountain of wealth at suntec city mall wondering which restaurant to check out, i never realised there is muthu’s curry! honestly, i have no idea how i ever missed this. having an indian restaurant there amongst the mostly chinese and western eateries is definitely a breath of fresh air, especially for an indian food lover like myself!

Muthu's Curry

when it comes to the best indian restaurants in singapore, tour guides frequently recommend muthu’s curry, as well as banana leaf (both in little india). muthu’s was established in 1969, with its fish head curry winning the hearts of many. this suntec outlet is actually muthu’s second branch.

since we were a not-so-hungry party of two, we felt that we couldn’t possibly finish the entire fish head curry dish ourselves. (this dish needs no introduction anyway, right?) so, we opted for a couple other dishes instead.

Masala Chicken

each time i’m at an indian restaurant, i would make it a point to order masala chicken as long as it’s on the menu. the spicier it is, the better! the masala chicken here isn’t that spicy, having been toned down to suit most taste buds. but it sure doesn’t disappoint! the tender chicken is napped in a thick masala paste that is rich in herbs and spices and bursting with flavor! my only gripe? too little gravy!

at $4 apiece for the chicken, what you will get isn’t exactly the most generous serving. so when ordering, make sure to err on the side of more! also ask for more gravy. otherwise, you may find yourself fighting with your dinner partners for more of this delicious spicy paste to go with your briyani rice!

Goan Fish Curry

for a place with “curry” in its name, we thought we had to have a curry dish. but sadly, the goan fish curry doesn’t score quite as many points as the masala chicken. the portion we got was really small and the fish itself wasn’t that fleshy. besides, i think i really need more spice in my curry! the curry in this dish is pretty mild, a little bland even, if i dare say. i wonder if this is the same curry that they use in their famed fish head curry?

Masala Tea

it’s been a long time since i last had masala tea, or “spicy” tea. i love the way the mixture of spices in the tea give me a kick up the nostrils each time. but somehow, the masala tea here is extremely tame! i barely detected any hint of spice in it. it was a real disappointment!

one thing that i do like about it, though, is that they have included a cinnamon stick as a stirrer. that was cute!

when all has been said, i’m still pretty satisfied after this meal. what can i say? indian food makes me happy! looks like i gotta pay a visit to little india real soon!

    1. was in the suntec muthu’s in Jan 2008 when i was back for a short visit. my friend and i ordered some dishes, and though the dishes were generally good, the service was somewhat lacking.

or it could be because i’m used to the level of service in the states, where foilks have to work for their tips…

i love, and miss the masala chicken, and of course, the fish head curry.. yummy. View all comments by offpoint

    2. Curry! The kind of stuff employees flavour their bosses with! :) It looks so thick-ish that you can spread it over the rice or your superior. View all comments by pkchukiss

    3. i went to muthu’s curry around jan this year for a friend’s birthday, as we wanted to have something different for a change.
I found the service rather poor, as the waiter looked and sounded entirely irritated when we asked him about the various dishes they have, and when we ordered 4 dishes to share for the 6 of us, he gave an incredulous ‘ that’s all?’ remark, which was definitely unnecessary.

The food overall was average. We tried some mushroom and it was quite bad, the only thing edible was the masala chicken and the squid in curry.

Towards the end, when we have finished the dishes, we started to chit chat, and after like 30minutes, a waiter came over and propped the bill onto our table, which was like an indirect invitation to leave. And the whole restaurant wasnt even 1/5 full.

I doubt i’ll be going back there. View all comments by michelle

    4. offpoint: You have a point about the correlation between good service and tipping. The great service I get at bars and restaurants in the US is such a stark contrast to what I get over here! I’ve always been a firm believer that the only effective way we can drive up service standards in Singapore is if we abolished the mandatory service charge system and introduce tipping instead.

pkchukiss: Haha your cute comment brightened my day, if a little corny :)

michelle: Looks like poor service is a common complaint amongst Muthu’s customers. I may not have been on the receiving end of the bad attitude like you were, but I can imagine. Poor attitude or knowledge displayed by the waitstaff can really spoil the dining experience, no matter how good the food may be. Shame, shame!

But hey, at least the masala chicken was good! View all comments by Veron

    7. I recommend the chicken tikka and naans, and yes, the service isn’t fantastic, but the food is really quite good. View all comments by Kenny
