Pontian Wanton Mee - Me Wants Wanton Mee

i’m not exactly a fan of noodle dishes. but recently, a colleague introduced me to the famous pontian wanton mee and i was sold! since then, we’ve been having this colorful dish at least once a week! wanton mee is a type of chinese dish with noodles (mee) and dumplings (wanton).

Wanton Mee

the pontian wanton mee stall has a long history dating back 60 years. they have a few branches over the island. luckily for us, one of it is at our workplace in toa payoh central!

Pontian Wanton Mee

at lunchtime, there would always be a long queue forming in front of the stall for their handmade wanton mee. yes, the dumplings are handmade. even the mee itself is handmade. check it out!

colorful! on the first taste, i was won over by the sweet and spicy sauce consisting of both chili sauce and ketchup that lend it much flavor. the noodles are firm, springy and not the least bit soggy. in fact, the mee is so good, i think you can just have it alone! that might also explain why the other ingredients are always given in small portions…

Deep-fried wanton

…such as the deep-fried wanton. i do really like the wanton, but feel that they are really baby-sized. bigger wanton would be far more satisfying!

Wanton in soup

there’s boiled wanton in the tasty soup too. again, baby-sized, but yummy too.

the best way to eat this dish is to eat it really slowly, savoring the tasty sauce bit by bit. heck, i think i’m gonna have it again tomorrow!

    1. This stall is located outside HDB Hub, it seems?

I have been visiting Toa Payoh almost every Thu evening because of my music theory lessons, but I guess I should venture beyond HDB Hub…. View all comments by py

    2. coincidentally, i just had this for dinner last nite at bedok interchange hawker centre. haha…

it was alright only, to me. the noodles were good, i liked it that the fried wanton didnt soften too quickly. but i thought the sauce was too salty, masking the taste of everything else. the charsiew was too bland for my taste. View all comments by Daphne Maia

    3. There was one point in my life where I ate Wanton Mee for lunch every single day without getting tired of it. The stall that sold it was that good; too bad they somehow went out of business two years back, so I’m Wanton-free for 2 years now: the other stalls near where I live sold rip-offs! 4. py: Yep, it’s at a kopi tiam. Out of the HDB Hub but still within Toa Payoh Central. It’s at the HDB Block 177!

Daphne Maia: I forgot all about the char siew! I do remember them being in very small petite slices though. Nothing too memorable. I’m not supposed to be eating pork anyway, so…

pkchukiss: Is there such a thing as authentic wanton mee? Tell us more! View all comments by Veron

    5. thanks for the heads-up! i love wanton mee. have been trying a lot of stalls hurhur…too bad nus stalls suck.

there’s one stall in Amoy Food Centre, on the first floor. Very nice. another’s near queenstown mrt. it should be near stirling walk. heard that there’s another good one in geylang lorong 15 (i think) which i will try it out sooner or later. View all comments by Aristocrat

    6. I tried the Pontian wanton mee at Heeren, you know that now defunt Graffiti cafe? Unfortunately I didn’t like it as I found it a tad too sweet. I prefer my wanton mee to be a little spicy…the best that I have eaten so far was in school!
PS: do you realised that wanton mee is always serve in such small portions? I always take two bowls in one go! View all comments by Joyz

    7. Aristocrat: Wow, you sure are willing to travel for good wanton mee! Try Pontian, if you don’t mind the tiny wanton, that is.

Joyz: I wonder if the wanton mee tastes different at the various Pontian branches. There seem to be mixed sentiments about all of them.

Two bowls at one go? That’s hardcore! View all comments by Veron

    9. There is one at Redhmill hawker centre but wasnt that nice. I have tried Heeren’s too and its better. Wanton Mee is one of my favourite local dishes. If you do not mind travelling, there is one at Telok Blangah Heights and their wanton mee is really nice. However must wait till the uncle is cooking. hahaz!! View all comments by Valerie

    13. I love wanton mee. Its one of my favourite kind of noodles. Must try to Pontian Wanton Mee of Sparklette fame. The one at Old Airport Road with the fancy computerised queue number isn’t too bad, as well as Kok Kee at Lavendar Food Square. Personally, I prefer the wantons to be boiled rather than fried. 14. Joyz: Looks like your avatar works :)

Valerie: Are these all Pontian branches?

Dennis: Wow, that’s 2 recommendations for the stall at Amoy Food Centre. It must be really good!

Aristocrat: Good! The one I feature here is in Toa Payoh Central. Looking at the other comments, it seems they have branches in a few other places too. But probably only the Toa Payoh branch is good.

daniel: Awesome! I love my dishes with good chili in them.

walter: Haha not “Sparklette fame” la. Boiled or fried wanton, you get the best of both worlds here! View all comments by Veron

    16. Haha! I think it’s one of those places that you probably wouldn’t notice if someone hadn’t mentioned it already.

I love the sweet sauce used by Pontian. Just had wanton mee from another stall at ABC Market last night which was cooked differently. The sauce was salty instead. I wasn’t impressed, and found myself preferring the sweet sauce overall. View all comments by Veron

    18. it’s amazing tt i’ve not tried the pontian wanton mee despite having lived in tp all my life, though the coffeeshop is considered relatively new compared to the years i’ve lived there. instead i had a rather unpleasant experience dining at the sarawak kolo mee shop at blk 190 inside the row of shops facing ya kun. it was dry n bland n i think i’d rather have maggi mee instead. definitely not value for money as well. 26. Unfortunately, this is not Pontian Wanton Mee. It is using the name of Pontian, but if anyone of you been to Pontian and taste the local made you will understand what I meant.

      The differences are:
      1) No fried wanton, all wanton are soupy
      2) No vege but only chopped spring onions
      3) The noodle is thinner

I have been eating Pontian Wantan Mee for more than 25 years, and I could straight away tell the difference from pictures. However I do thank them for making the name of Pontian Wanton Mee famous.

If you guys like this wanton mee, you should definitely try out the genuine Pontian Wanton Mee in Pontian. You’ll get addicted! View all comments by Puntin Kiah
