it’s laksa day today! we had laksa at home for both lunch and dinner. yeah, yeah, i know that sounds utterly unhealthy and fattening. still, the laksa was extremely yummy and quite possibly the best i’ve ever had. that’s pretty amazing considering it came right out of a box!
yup, we cheated. we didn’t make the laksa from scratch. why would we when there is prima taste’s ready-to-cook meal kit for laksa?
for those of you with a puzzled look on your face, laksa is a spicy soup dish of chinese and malay origins, commonly found in singapore and malaysia. the soup is made largely of coconut milk, which means it’s high in cholesterol and very fattening. a bowl of laksa may have at least 700 calories!
laksa is served with either noodles or rice vermicelli. people eat it with a range of ingredients, usually cockles, prawn, poultry meat, bean sprouts, tau pok (fried tofu) or fishballs. in singapore, laksa is a very common hawker food.
because it is such a popular dish, it wasn’t long before a company came out with instant laksa. after all, there are already instant coffee, instant noodles, instant pizza, and even instant satay. so why not instant laksa? prima taste packages its instant laksa in the form of a “ready-to-cook meal kit”, consisting of 4 packets of seasoning:

with this kit, cooking laksa is a breeze. the packet of laksa premix goes into the water first, turning it into a milky white coconut gravy.

throw in the laksa paste and bring the soup to boil. voila! you have your pot of laksa soup! that’s how easy it is! bachelors and girls who can’t cook can all rejoice!

for ingredients, we had shrimp, chicken meat and fishballs. from start to finish, it took only 5 to 10 minutes before we could enjoy our bowls of piping hot laksa. the kit also includes a packet of dried laksa leaves that can be used to sprinkle over the dish, and a sachet of awesome sambal chili!

the sambal chili was extremely rich and flavorful. my only gripe is that there was too little of it! right after this i’m writing to prima taste to compliment them on their products, and ask for more sambal chili!
seriously people, you really ought to try this out! besides laksa, this range of ready-to-cook meal kits also include hot local favorites such as mee rebus, fried hokkien mee, singapore curry, chilli crab and bak kut teh, just to name a few.
prima taste’s ready-to-cook meal kits are available at most supermarkets. people are buying these meal kits in cartons! to ship to friends overseas, they say. yeah, that’s how good these meal kits are.

These Prima packs are a staple for a bunch of us in Buffalo. Most of their premixes are awesome, especially in places devoid of Singaporean food. View all comments by Kevin
More importantly, they actually taste good! View all comments by Veron
Thanks for the review! Am stuck in Aussie now, so I am totally deprived of Sg food. Gonna get that pack from chinatown. ^^ View all comments by Ah_Ying

the other time I saw it at the airport inside the waiting lounge, was tempted to buy it for oversea relatives. Hmm looks like a good pick. (the hainanese chicken rice dunno how leh?) View all comments by chillycraps
So far I’ve tried their laksa and Singapore curry. Both are really good! The Hainanese chicken rice can’t be too far off. View all comments by Veron
Hi Veron, try the chicken curry as well. I had it there at their cafe @ Centrepoint and it was yummy! I would suggest buying a pre-pack and cook at home to add as many potatoes or other ingredients as possible. Then just slurp it up with freshly toasted baguette! Bagus! View all comments by Joyz
Tried the Singapore curry and I concur that it’s awesome! Now you’ve gotten me all hungry again. Too bad I’ve run out of the meal kits! View all comments by Veron
This looks like the one I had at the airport in March when I was going home for a month. If it is, it’s very good though lacking on the chilli side as you mention. A bit on the pricey side in the airport as well though that’s probably because of the AMT. View all comments by James

The chilli crab ones are good!
I remember bringing around 20 boxes of it to Sydney haha.. In exchange for 2 weeks accomodation at friends place.
The strict aussie customs looked at it for so long. I went to the red lane to declare them. I think the custom officer was eyeing all the packets! Ask me what they are, as if he does not know….
You can get fab crabs in Sydney, so on the last day of my trip there, we had chilli crabs that was so yummy! View all comments by Keropok Man
Haha 20 boxes for 2 weeks’ accommodation, I’d say that’s a good trade.
And I thought Aussies didn’t like to eat crabs! View all comments by Veron
