if you happen to be in the bukit merah vicinity and craving for a warm plate of hainanese chicken rice, head over to sin heng kee at 28 hoy fatt road. this friendly family-run stall sells some of the cheapest and yummiest chicken rice around!
for starters, the standard price for a plate of chicken rice at most hawker centers and coffee shops is $2.50. over here, a plate of fragrant chicken rice with a generous serving of tender chicken breast sets you back by just $2! absolutely value for money!

i am not exaggerating when i say that the hainanese chicken rice here is one of the best. how many times have you eaten shoddily prepared chicken rice that comes with measly portions of dry chicken meat and plain white rice instead of chicken rice? over here, you are assured of a sumptuous meal of chicken rice with a warm bowl of soup to wash down the yumminess. oh and did i mention the fresh tomato and cucumber too?
my mom and i both LOVE this stall because of its generous serving. the first time we came here, we were surprised by the huge portion of chicken breast meat we got for just $6. there was enough food for four people! back then i had attributed the huge portion to the fact that the stall was perhaps closing for the day and had a lot of leftover chicken. but the second and third times we visited, our portions just grew bigger and bigger!
and it’s not just about having quantity. sin heng kee certainly doesn’t compromise on the quality of the food. the rice is fragrant, savory and non-oily while the skinless chicken meat is silky smooth and delightfully tender too. the chili sauce and dark soy sauce are perfect with the chicken too! if i had my wish i would eat it everyday!
i simply cannot find any fault with the sin heng kee hainanese chicken rice stall, except for its somewhat drab look. but that’s not really its fault since the stall itself is clean and brightly lit, but the coffee shop as a whole isn’t in particular a cheery looking one.
cheap chicken rice that is delicious at the same time is quite rare these days. if you happen to drop by the area, this nondescript stall is worth checking out for a quick, no-fuss meal.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m always on a look to for new chicken rice places. Looks like it’s boneless too. Fantastic! Having to separate the meat from the bone fragments kills the momentum. :p
You might want to check out the Boneless Hainanese Chicken rice stall at the Golden Mile Hawker Centre (opposite Golden Mile), at basement floor on the far left from the stairs. The lady who serves the food goes around yelling, “Siew ah! Siew ah!” whenever she walks around with a steaming bowl of soup. One of the best chicken rice I’ve ever eaten! View all comments by Pari
defiane, go get some! You aren’t in the UK are you?

Wow Pari thanks for recommendation too! You can be sure I would try out that chicken rice stall at Golden Mile the next time I’m in the vicinity. I’m sure that loud lady would be hard to miss! Haha…
Looks like you have an appetite for boneless Hainanese chicken rice! Have you been to ABC Market? It’s right at my place and has been undergoing a revamp since August last year. It is about to be ready and when it finally opens (should be around end August or September), our famous Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice stall would be back in business! You should check it out! Thanks for recommendation. I am in that area quite often. Surprisingly, 1 of the best chicken rice stall I know is in an unknown industrial eating house in Tuas.
Have you tried Ipoh Ngar Choy chicken. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just go to Flickr and do a search. View all comments by Lam Chun See
Ipoh Ngar Choy chicken? Sounds interesting! I have to go try that some day!
There are quite a few great eating places in this area. When ABC Market reopens in the next couple of months, you should come check it out. All the old stalls would be back! View all comments by Veron
