the fact that i don’t listen to radio nowadays means i’m no longer up to date with the new pop music these days. to keep my ipods brimming with new songs, much of the music i have comes from tv shows. the songs that play in the background on tv shows are almost always good. i make it a point to pay attention to the music i hear in tv shows and movies.
back when buffy the vampire slayer was still showing, one of the most frequently used sets/locations within the show, was a club called “the bronze”. it was where the main characters hanged out most of the time. at the bronze, actual live bands performed. their music rocked! god knows how many musicians i have come to know were from there! buffy was one show that always had, not just good, but great music.
these days, the shows that consistently feature good music are the o.c., veronica mars, grey’s anatomy, and supernatural. the bands behind the music tend to be indie (from independent labels) and more obscure. it is a good way to discover great music that is never played on radio.
in the most recent episode of lost (episode 219, “S.O.S.”), a sweet little tune plays at the end of the show. it’s called “these arms of mine” by a soul singer in the 60’s, otis redding.
to sidetrack a little… the lost series has intrigued me for the longest time. week after week, i look forward to thursday when i can get my fix of the latest episode. one of the things i really like about the show is that it has a touch of michael crichton’s sci-fi ingenuity. crichton is none other than my most favorite author of all time. i have read two of his novels, sphere and timeline, many times before, as well as loaned them out to several of my friends. they all loved the two books!
one can never underestimate the creative department of the show. otis redding, the soul singer mentioned above whose song is featured in the latest episode, actually did die in a plane crash. kind of morbid to feature his song in a show where the main characters had also crashed onto the island from a plane.
anyway, the point is that there is always good music hidden within tv shows. the next time you watch any show, do be sure to pay attention to the music playing in the background, or even blasting from the car that a character is driving.
several obscure bands are waiting to be heard!

goes by the name veron (english) or wanting (chinese). a definitive leo born august 1, 1984. a solo traveler. loves cats, coffee, sensual music, yummy food and technology. when she's not at her job as an IS developer for the government, she's likely to be out dining, or visiting an interesting art gallery or event.

Other good example is kill bill 1 and 2, tons of nice music inside =)
and i really agree with the pts of finding good music in tv show. The korean and japan drama use great deal of music also. I’m sure u know abt cagnet right?

yeah cagnet! and s.e.n.s. as well, although i don’t really pay any attention to japanese or korean drama these days. View all comments by Veron
Hey chup, I love the eclectic style that Kill Bill employs too! Quentin Tarantino is a genius…but sometimes it can be a bit overkill - just check out the new movie Hostel…seriously, it gives a whole new meaning to "bloodfest".
Hey wanting, I don’t bother listening to radio unless it’s class 95…old tunes are nostalgic and really bring on the mood, unlike those pretentious rappers that are practically saturating the airwaves over at Perfect 10…turn-off.
Personally, the music behind the scene is very important because viewers tend to attribute a certain song to a certain significant situation. For me, the O.C. does provide pretty nice tunes now and then, but not exactly memorable - about half the show is about Ryan kissing Sadie, Marissa kissing Volchok, Summer kissing Seth, Neil kissing Julie…and the significance behind those scenes, as well as the accompanying music, is lost upon the viewers more easily.
Grey’s Anatomy is simply a treasure trove of beautiful tunes, from melancholic to chirpy, soulful to angsty…simply great!
Timeline is one of my favourite books of all time. I might not be a Crichton fan, but his work there was simply amazing, literally transporting us back into a totally different epoch.
Back to Lost again…Henry Gale is evil!! That malicious grin was so belated, and now we know he’s surely an Other.
Where is Walt? Just when the audience was doing pretty well being distracted by the new characters having flashbacks, like Eko, then Bernard and Rose this week, here stumbles Michael out of nowhere. Now the show has pulled me back…Carlton and Damon sure are working hard!
Lost’s instrumental music is almost always perfect. That scene with Hurley and Libby at the cliff…sigh, I almost shed a tear.
You should check out the Podcasts for Lost, wanting! The interviews are very interesting, and as you said, the actors reveal their struggles in adapting to the character and how life imitates art and vice versa. Plus, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff crack me up everytime with their crazy, self-deprecating repartee every week! Lots of fan questions answered too.
By the way, since we’re talking about music, you should check out Death Cab For Cutie, Imogen Heap and Sufjan Stevens. And unless anyone’s been living in some deserted island - with or without a hatch, savage people with a penchant for cosplay, or crazy French women - you should’ve already checked out The Arcade Fire! I saw Hostel months back and found it quite a pain to watch, literally. i was wincing during the scene where one of the victims was slashed at his achilles tendon. Gee, I still shudder at the thought of it.
That movie was a cool deviation from the usual horror flicks where unknowing victims stumble upon a deserted place that houses some monster or psycho. The concept where rich people pay money to torture others is quite refreshing. That said, it doesn’t necessarily mean I like the movie. I rated it 2.5 stars.
Back when I was still listening to radio, it was always 98.7 as that’s where they always play the newest tunes. I do agree that these days, it’s always overrun with rappers, and rap isn’t my cup of tea, except when it’s Eminem, and sometimes Snoop Dogg or Nelly.
I like The O.C. because the main characters come from unbelievably rich families, yet have their own set of problems like any other normal kid, problems that the audience can relate to. Half the show is about Ryan kissing Sadie, Marissa kissing Volchok, Summer kissing Seth, Neil kissing Julie? Not quite. I believe that’s only in the last couple of episodes. These days I’m starting to find Seth really annoying though. And it’s a shame that Sadie isn’t coming back; I kind of endeared to her. Love her overall look and personality.
Yeah Michael’s return is quite sudden, though not quite a shocker. He can’t disappear forever, can he? Though I’d like him to. He is one of those characters on the show I wouldn’t mind not seeing ever again, along with Jin, Sun, Walt, Charlie, and Claire.
I used to listen to the ABC’s Lost Podcast, but then I lost it! When I try to relocate it on iTunes again, it’s always one of those fan podcasts that I find. Would greatly appreciate if you could point me in the right direction. Carlton and Damon are hilarious at times, despite their no-nonsense tone.
Thanks for the recommendations on those three bands! I haven’t heard of two of them, but I have Imogen Heap’s Speak For Yourself album. I like the female vocals. A couple other underrated bands to check out would be Cibo Matto, made up of a couple of Japanese girls who perform English songs, and Zero 7, if you like electronic ambient music. And oh oh, Martina Topley-Bird, who can make any music sound sensual.
Can’t wait to hear what Michael says next week. No wait, the next episode comes in May! ABC has done it again, making Lost fans wait an excruciating three weeks. I’m not happy. View all comments by Veron
Nelly does have some rhythm going on…Too bad Eminem’s retired.
Sadie was great! It was definitely refreshing watching Ryan finally get personal with someone who isn’t as self-destructive as Marissa. Oh, Sadie kind of reminds me of Theresa too. With Marissa, I’ve gone from eye candy to endearing to hating then now sympathising…sure hopes she ditches Volchok and goes to Berkeley with Ryan. I would’ve have picked Lindsey, but well, you know, that’s just wrong.
Oh yes, Seth is super annoying nowadays. Summer is getting dragged down by his whining…Brown, no Brown. Anyway, did you know Anna’s coming back? Yay! And they should have Taylor play a larger role. Seems like she’ll be casted as a permanent character on the 4th season.
For me, I don’t use iTunes - I simply download the mp3 version off the official site. That works everytime, so perhaps you could try that instead of iTunes?
Aaahh, THREE weeks? Oh man, and Grey’s Anatomy next week is a RECAP…guess you’ll be zipping through South Park seasons, right? Haha…Well, I’ll have to catch up on the Apprentice Season 5 then. Wow, Charmaine really stepped up to the plate on the cereal thingy! Brent out…yes! View all comments by harrison
I just love reading your comments harrison! You provide useful input and I learn something new every single time!
Eminem is retired??? I thought that was just a rumor! Seriously, I hope that’s not really happening. Maybe his marital woes are getting to him. Remarrying Kim and then redivorcing her three months later. That must suck.
I love Sadie, but I would much prefer seeing Ryan end up with Marissa. The way things have been, they are kinda like the Ross-Rachel relationship from friends. I feel among the four girls, Marissa’s the one who really loves him unconditionally. Theresa, Lindsey and Sadie simply did not get as much screen time.
Anna is another character that ought to be on every episode! Back then, she was easily my most favorite character with her spunky attitude. She’s coming back? When? Though I don’t really sense any love triangle coming up again between her, Seth and Summer.
Speaking of which, Seth doesn’t really deserve Summer. He lies nonstop. Also in Summer’s words, she is "five levels hotter than he is". LOL I loved that line!
Would catch up on the ABC’s Lost Podcast soon. Gee, I can’t wait!
The Apprentice 5 is really quite boring. Now that they killed off, err I mean fired the most humorous candidate (not Brent) on the show, it’s no longer quite as enjoyable as before. I don’t wanna spoil it for you so I shan’t reveal who that is.
By the way, the editing team seemed really bent on portraying Brent as a glutton. Every single scene of him in the suite shows him burying his face into some food. It got quite tacky after a while.
This is the first season I have seen where I can’t really find the potential next Apprentice. In the previous season, there was Randal who seemed the perfect Apprentice. This time, each of the remaining candidates looks as equally undeserving as the next. Even Tarek, the Mensan genius, is completely not up to the mark. It’s a disappointing season after all.
I’m better off watching South Park. It never fails to entertain, episode after episode. View all comments by Veron
Haha thanks, but I learn a lot from your comments too! Though I haven’t discovered just how you lost weight by eating…all will be revealed in due time!
Last week’s ep really felt way too scripted and coincidental…Sadie leaves, the yellow sweater starts working its Berkeley magic on Marissa, both somehow "accidentally" meet at the beach house? If the writers wanted to make the Ryan-Marissa coupling blatantly obvious, they couldn’t have done it better! Oh well, it’s the O.C. - anything goes.
Yeah, I was rooting for Seth in S1 when he won over Summer’s heart, but then with that Tahiti escapade, then pot, then this…I can’t stand the way he can’t get over the fact that Summer just isn’t the stereotypical bimbo whom he can prove to be smarter than every time…so derogatory! Summer deserves someone like…Zach. Haha though he was a jerk at times, at least he was sincere.
Rachel Bilson has the best lines. Maybe it’s the way she says it, but she’s really adorable!
Yesterday, I was listening to the podcast on the bus, and people were glancing weirdly at me periodically because I was trying to suppress laughing at Carlton and Damon!
Spoiler alert! It’s Lenny, right? Him being the comedian as "recommended" by Trump the night Brent was fired. Well, it’s pretty ok, and nobody seems particularly impressive. Even the impeccable Sean flopped at the presentation. Is there salvation?
When are they going to allow Kelly, Kendra and Randal sit next to Trump in the boardroom? Oh, and I love Ivanka…ice queen. But Caroline still wins my vote.
Check out this link for up-to-date info on the O.C.!

Is Veronica Mars good? I’m looking for new shows to watch. Meanwhile, I shall indulge in 24 …saving that for a marathon sometime! South Park…sourcing for the first few seasons is quite hard…see what I can do. View all comments by harrison
and the cleverest idea of the producers of "lost" is that: they have so many unknown characters… you’ve watched episode 19, you know that when bernard asked for help to build the SOS sign, so many unknown faces popped out, the producers can introduce them to us one by one with their individual stories and it’ll take like a few more seasons! haha View all comments by melvin
