Xin Wang Hong Kong Café - More Than Just Hong Kong Fares

as someone that really enjoys checking out new restaurants, there still are a number of eating establishments that i remain loyal to. the sambal stingray at rong guang, indonesian grilled chicken, assam prawns at bakerzin, and sweet red curry at lerk thai are some dishes that frequently give me cravings and keep me going back for more. (i know right now you are probably thinking of your own faves!)

most recently, i fell in love with the curry chicken at xin wang hong kong café. with an extensive menu offering various dishes at affordable prices, xin wang is one of the most popular chains of hong kong cafés that have sprung up in singapore in recent years.

for the curry chicken, a crowd favorite, you can choose to have it either with rice, noodle or bread. while initially, i would go for rice, i soon learned that bread is a much better complement. it is the softest bread in the world with a lovely tinge of sweetness!

the curry is extremely rich and wonderfully fragrant, and not too salty at the same time. with a spiciness that is just about right, this dish is comfortable for most people. i find that the curry gravy is also thicker than most home-cooked curry, but doesn’t leave you feeling sick even after slurping down a whole bowl of it.

then, it also comes with generous chunks of chicken with very tender meat that just taste oh-so-good. and let’s not forget the soft bread. the sweetness provides a great contrast to the curry.

at a recent visit to white sands pasir ris, i noticed that the outlet here sells the curry chicken two dollars cheaper than other outlets. of course, the lower price means you get less of the curry goodness. the simmering curry is served in a white oval-shaped bowl here as opposed to a much larger black bowl elsewhere. i myself prefer the smaller portion, which is much more manageable.

you have to try it for yourself! curry chicken + bread = :)

Luncheon Meat & Egg Ramen

in hong kong, noodles served with luncheon meat (spam), vegetable and a sunny-side up egg is a popular dish. personally, this wouldn’t appeal to me. xin wang also offers this, albeit at a rather costly price-tag, considering the simple ingredients used.

here’s something interesting though. the restaurant actually makes its own luncheon meat from scratch after the ban of two major luncheon meat suppliers from china last august. some customers say that it is almost similar to the original, with a firmer texture and more natural taste.

with the two main courses ordered above, our waitress sprang a little surprise by serving a complimentary plate of fried wanton with delicious mayonnaise. i think this freebie is available only at the white sands outlet; i haven’t encountered it anywhere else.

Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf

as if there aren’t enough goodies already, we also ordered some sticky glutinous rice for good measure. it’s wrapped in lotus leaf and served in a bamboo steamer. this one would fill you up in no time so i would discourage getting it if you are already having many other dishes.

a trip to any hong kong café simply wouldn’t be complete without a cup of yuan yang or yin yeung (in cantonese). it’s a delightful mixture of tea and coffee, and you can choose to have it served hot or cold. i always prefer it hot.

Xin Wang Hong Kong Café menu

if you have yet to check out xin wang, i can assure you you would definitely find something you like. after all, there are more than 200 food items to choose from!

one thing that always impresses me is the huge variety. besides the conventional toast, noodle and rice dishes, there are also stuff that you wouldn’t expect to find in a hong kong café. in the mood for pasta? sure! how about roti prata? no problem! (though i doubt they have indian cooks to whip that up.)

so tell me, do you have a favorite restaurant with a dish that just keeps you going back for more? i wanna hear all about it!

  4. Morning Veron !! :)

Hmm…I always prefer to eat curry chicken with bread you buy from those nieghbourhood confectionary where they sell those “home-make” “traditional” local bread.
Those types which are not square or rectangular….

My second choice would be baguette. My only problem with baguette is the cleaning up after the meal…lots of bread crunchs lying eveywhere on the table….

Third choice would be “yu-tiao” ….
    try it, super sinful.

You can either use hot “yu-tiao” or the cold type.
Different taste, suitable for different type of curry.

    : )

  5. GaMerZ: You and me both!

X Wings: Talking about that, a couple of days ago, I just tried the new curry chicken from Old Chang Kee. They had a $3 promotion, instead of its usual $4. The curry portion is similar to what you get when you buy a tau huey takeout, you know, the kind that comes in a transparent plastic container.

Anyway, the curry was surprisingly good! They don’t use coconut milk so I didn’t expect it to turn out that well. The bread that comes along is rather stiff though. It’s a big one in the shape of a semi-sphere and I just took a few bites and dumped it.

Boy, you tiao in curry sounds like an extremely sinful and heaty combo! I like to dip my you tiao in kopi. Nice! Try it if you haven’t :D View all comments by Veron

  6. Yu-Tiao with hot thick Milo, hot chocolate or Tea (Vaporised Milk) is nice too !! Try it !!

    Suggestions for your blog:
    (1) Include special promotions informations when you feature a restaurant, example
if they have 1-for-1 free during lunch, free flow beer during happy hours, etc
    (2) Include information like any special discount if you pay using certain
credit cards (if the restaurant tie up with any credit card promotions)
    (3) Come up with coupons or allow a printout of your Blog for your readers to get free
desserts/ discounts etc (if you tie up with the restaurant…)
—> good way to gauge how many of your readers turn up at those restaurant
    after reading your blog…

I know you dislike any discussion about you making $ from your blog, worrying how it may distort things etc etc etc etc but its high time you find ways to make $ from your blog to supplement your blogs / eating habbits !!! ;P
    Example:
    (1) Can consider tie up with credit card firms, restaurants, etc etc
    (2) Go with your guy friends who like to give treats…..hahaha…
(but frankly there’re really such friends around us……)
    (3) Auction off lunch/dinner dates with you or any of your single guy/female friends…

    :P

Time to let the fun begins !!!! View all comments by X-Wings

  9. Mmmmmm …. Looks yummy indeed, and right up my alley. I find that Hong Kong street food seem to have a quite a following here although the curry chicken is a bit odd. Still, Singapore has alway been known as a cosmopolitan melting pot of flavours (ie rojak lah).

Nice to see the continued focus on lifestyle here, Veron. Keep it going! View all comments by Walter

  10. That curry chicken with bread looks so tempting to me. I never noticed that there is this dish in their menu.

Usually I go for pork chop rice :D

  11. X-Wings: You have some really excellent ideas! Believe it or not, I have considered including promotion/discount information. But these things tend to be temporary in nature, and I’d like to be able to provide the most up-to-date information to my readers. Right now I already have a hard enough time keeping track of those eating establishments that have closed down!

Making money through blog ads is something I have always opposed. But I’m not going to rule it out completely either. We’ll see :)

Walter: Thanks! I’m gonna blog about the Singapore Garden Festival soon. Time to take a break from all these calorific posts! View all comments by Veron

  13. Awesome! That’s my favorite Xin Wang outlet! It’s the most convenient for me anyway, and isn’t too crowded like the rest.

Want me some curry chicken soon too! Did you manage to finish the curry all by yourself? View all comments by Veron
