Have you ever breathed in a smell and found it deeply familiar, as though you have been magically transported back in time to a certain moment from your past? A scent can bring on a torrent of memories, affect your emotions and instantly take you back to a distant moment in time. Because the olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling, it is sometimes called the “emotional brain”. A scent can call up memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously, perhaps even in a way no other senses can!
Maybe that is why some of us wear perfumes and other fragrances. As individuals don’t we all wish to have our own unique identity? Fragrances make us feel happy, reflect some aspects of our own personality, and give us the ability to show off our individuality.
Check out these two lovely videos, where couples embark on a little social experiment called the Scent Test. One partner is blindfolded to see if he or she can recognise his/her loved one by scent alone. The results may surprise you.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, perhaps a unique fragrance would be the ideal gift.
