I am having a lot of fun interacting with readers on Twitter and Facebook. To spice things up even more, I thought it might be interesting to run some food polls. This way we can learn more from one another and maybe even try out new food!

Sparklette Food Poll! What is your morning pick-me-up - tea or coffee?

To start things off, I tweeted an impromptu question last night:

What is your morning pick-me-up – tea or coffee?

For a simple either-or question, a surprisingly good mix of responses came in!

From Twitter,

From Facebook,

  • Joel Pan says: Milk.
  • Jennifer Hardy says: tea :)
  • Merv Kwok says: coffee
  • WeeKee Chia says: coke? :D
  • Saul Sio says: Milo
  • Elf Seah says: coffee
  • Edmund Ng says: milk and cereals
  • Anastasia Sin says: kopi o kao ka dai
  • Khairani Moktar says: teh c

That’s a whole range of answers! No one said beer?

As an avid coffee drinker myself, I start each morning with a hot cup of kopi si. This is, quite simply, coffee with evaporated milk. It’s less sweet than the sugar and condensed milk variety. Personally I find that the evaporated milk gives the drink a smoother and well-rounded texture.

What’s your morning pick-me-up?

Agree with you abt evaporated milk improving the taste of coffee, esp the very strong type. For me, I always start the morning with coffee, with seven teaspoonfuls of mix rolled oats, steel cut oats and wheat germ bran added to the coffee powder, all topped off with some Oatley oat milk! A complete breakfast in one large cup!

I drink soya bean milk in the morning most of the time.
If I am forced to choose between tea and coffee, tea with milk will be my choice.

It depends on what I’m doing on the day: if I didn’t have enough sleep the day before, and I have an important assignment, I would go for coffee with extra milk and sugar (kopi kah dai). Otherwise, it’s tak kiew less ice for me.

Would you say S’pore is a tea or coffee culture? Seems split but my guess is coffee (or kopi) has the lion’s share.

Then there’s Godzillas & Dinosaurs and Teh Cino/ Kopi Cino. Wonder if Malaysia will claim these as theirs as well. :)

Can I say something citrusy like unsweetened grapefruit and orange juice (with pulp) as like what Juin Hao voted for.

Not a drinker of coffees and teas. Ocassionally an ice-coffee with lots of condensed milk is a nice start. If tea, there has to be a slice of lemon. Plain tea is simply hard to take (whatever flavours or infusions).

Anyone likes bread with condensed milk and milo powder. Suddenly remembered the crazy things I used to do as a kid, stealing scoops of horlicks, milo or ovaltine and eating them by the spoonfuls…. that was the perk-me-up for the day when no one is around. (usually get caught when adult finds the spoon missing or with fossilised evidence)..

That’s not all. I think I dripped condensed milk over Jacob’s biscuit too and watched the milk drip through the ‘holes’ in the seu-dar bia. Hahahaha. After that I sometimes dunk the entire piece into a cup of over-saturated milo drink.

I used to cough like mad after these sinful steals. That’s when my mom will check the tins and find evidence of over-indulgence.

Actually maybe you could have a new thread on ‘Stuff you did with food as a kid’ or something. I always thought I was weird, eating milo and all until I realised other people also had such kid-recipes when they were small. I don’t think by mom felt i was adorable. For sure i wasn’t, for contaminating the 1kg tin of milo, leaving behind a spoon with hardened substances in the tin. Hahahaha…

Forgot to respond to what you wrote about the aroma of coffee. I don’t drink coffee or tea but I do absolutely love the smell of coffee! So yes, the smell of coffee is the sure wake-me-up:)
