• Griller at the Tiong Bahru Plaza has been quietly dishing up plate after plate of western fares. Sequestered away on the cinema level of the mall, one thing that stands out here is the provocative décor of the nude ladies on the walls. There’s no full-on porn, mind you, just a few life-sized comic drawings of naked women. But you can say that a visit here would stimulate your libido as well as your appetite!
I have come here a few times over the past few years mainly due to the reasonable prices and decent food. The S$11.90 set meals (S$14 after taxes) in particular offer great value in the form of a salad/soup, main course and soft drink/coffee/tea.

The salad of the day is Caesar salad, velvety rich with a sprinkling of crispy croutons and a liberal drizzle of dressing.

The cream of mushroom soup strikes me as a trifle bland, though I like that they have added actual slices of mushrooms.

The main courses follow the same generous proportioning. Chicken lovers will positively revel in the grilled chicken, its flavour enhanced by mushroom sauce and a generous dollop of mashed potatoes.

The fish and chips is yet another humongous portion with the accompaniments of tartar sauce, coleslaw, French fries and more salad. The breaded fillet has been deep fried to a shade of golden brown. Cutting it apart reveals a succulent and flaky interior.

All in all, if you are looking for a casual restaurant with decent food in this part of Singapore, you can check out Griller. At night, the alfresco dining area may offer a surprisingly romantic spot with the candlelight setting.

I think the Griller is closed? I pass by recently and noted it was another restaurant where Griller was. Alas probably to due to increasing rental.

You seem to have ate at almost every place in Tiong Bahru Plaza. Amazing. I can only vaguely remember eat at griller in 2007 and i vist that place probably once a week. .

I think i use to eat more at Lao Beijing and Rajah InN (for the steamboat. Before TB Plaza expanded their retail outlets, there really was a limited choice of cafes to eat. I didn’t seem to also note or recall the ‘nude’ paintings at Griller but guess you could be right. Griller seems to be the only Western Theme eatery around there. Hmm. strange that i stay around there previously and did not patronise as often. .

These days the only places I eat at TBP are Qi Ji (for the nasi lemak), Xin Wang and occasional takeaways from the basement sushi kiosk. I used to frequent Mr. Teh Tarik Cartel but it’s a pity they’re not there anymore.

Yes the Mr Teh Tarik Cartel was replaced by something similar(can’t recall the name) but the food was more expensive and doesn’t taste good. There use to be a chinese ‘la mian’ xiao xuan fung but think it closed down. I remember where Qi Ji once located, there was a pizza place of sorts… Was it california kitchen? I can’t recall. Such is the fate of our eating places. Here today, gone tomorrow!
By the way, like your article and pictures on the house of Up. I like that movie a lot. It tells the story of moving on… Have a nice weekend ahead.

This was the only one as far as I know. They were at Tiong Bahru Plaza for many years. It’s a pity they have closed.
