You may dislocate your jaw in an attempt to fit the mighty big sandwich in your mouth; there are just so many layers!

Although cutting it with a knife and fork may create an unwieldy mess, the knife stabbed in the heart of the sandwich does help to keep the sandwich in place. I have to eat the various ingredients separately, and they’re all delicious!

The beef patty is juicy, moist and tender, with at least two layers in the sandwich. The scrambled egg isn’t overcooked or runny; it’s just right! The cherry on top of the cake will have to be the toothsome onion rings! All the ingredients combine harmoniously to form a delicious sandwich.

Bloody Eyeballs
S$8.90++

The perfect drink to have at Halloween will be the creepy Bloody Eyeballs. This drink is available on the menu all year round.

As for the Jack the Ripper sandwich, it is only available till November 7, 2011. Unlike your typical Chinese restaurants that tend to go for a classy or modern look these days, the decor here is decked out like a traditional Chinese inn. Even the staff are dressed in costumes from that era!

Whether it is the brick walls, the square-shaped wooden tables and chairs, or the rows of ancient Chinese wine that fill the shelves, the quaint decor makes you feel as though you are in a period drama. To match the rustic ambience, the cooking certainly does not disappoint either.

Duck roasted with Ten Wonder herbs
S$12.80-34.80++
Rating:

The main specialty of this mid-priced restaurant chain is the herbal roast duck. The herbs are supposed to promote longevity and soothe the mind. Feeling stressed? You know what to eat!

Apart from the obvious health benefits of the herbs, the duck meat is tender, juicy and soaked in the most delicious sweet sauce. Even for someone that prefers chicken over duck any day, this dish remains deeply enjoyable. Only on special occasions, like when it’s someone’s birthday, would we enjoy the rare treat of dining at places like Fish & Co.

I remember there was once when a dozen of us crowded into the restaurant at Plaza Singapura. Shortly after sitting down to look at the menu, we had to make a rather embarrassing escape when we realised that we couldn’t afford the food! Yes, back then a Fish & Co meal seemed unattainable for us.

So, I think it’s great news that they are making their food extremely affordable now! From Sundays to Thursdays between now and October 31, they are reeling in customers with the fabulous Autumn Seafood Sensation promotion. Four seafood dishes are now priced at just $9 each!

Their fish and chips is rumoured to be the best in town. With this attractive promotion, it’s a great opportunity for everyone to put it to the test!

I did. So have they passed with flying colours?

Swiss fish & chips
S$9++
Rating:

The restaurant chain is famous for their seafood-in-a pan concept, where the dishes are served in little pans (though I’m pretty sure they don’t cook the food in them). Deep-fried to a lovely golden brown and topped with the signature garlic lemon butter sauce, the Swiss fish and chips certainly pass the initial looks test. The ample slab of dory fish helps a lot, too.

Still, none of that can prepare me for how awesome the batter is. It is one of the lightest, crispiest batter I have tasted, comparable to Japanese tempura! As for the flesh, it is tender, lightly salted and savoury throughout.

Look, it is even stuffed with Gruyere cheese!

This is, without a doubt, one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. (Hmm… I find that I have been using that phrase a lot lately.)

Another place that claims to have the best fish and chips is The Manhattan Fish Market. I haven’t had theirs before, but if it’s similar to the deep-fried fish fillet that they serve in their Flaming seafood platter, then it pales in comparison to Fish & Co’s.

Well, what do you think? Does Fish & Co have the best fish & chips?

Thai’s Deluxe Catch
S$9++
Rating:

One very flavourful dish included in the promotion is the Thai’s Deluxe Catch. It comprises of grilled dory fish, served with paella rice and a pile of fresh clams cooked in succulent tomato sauce.

The thing that “Thais” it together is the red curry ladled over the fish. The curry sauce is thick and sour, a very different rendition from your typical sweet Thai curry. I guess this is the tom yam edition. It goes well with the rice, and every bite is bursting with flavour!

With the promotion, both dishes cost just $9++!

Terms & Conditions:
- Promotion is not valid at the Paragon and Ion Orchard outlets.
- Seafood baked rice is not available at the Jurong Point outlet.
- Promotion is valid from Sundays to Thursdays excluding eve and day of public holidays.
- Promotion is valid for all day dine-in only.
- Promotion is not valid in conjunction with any other promotions, discounts, privileges, vouchers, and/or offers.

I really like the fact that the promotion is valid on Sundays, too. For your next meal, take advantage of these $9 Autumn Seafood Sensations! You can pick from:

Swiss fish & chips

Seafood baked rice

Captain’s Catch (barbecue sauce)

Thai’s Deluxe Catch (red curry sauce)

Aside from the food, I also notice that a copy of the restaurant’s newsletter is placed on every table. The quarterly publication contains the latest happenings and promotions at all the restaurants operated by the same company (that includes Giraffe Bar, too). This way, customers have something to read whilst waiting for their food. That’s a very cheap and clever marketing method! Another place that provides such light reads is tcc.

The newspaper-style design and the cute name really appeal to me. I’m referring to Popeyes, the world’s second largest fast food chain specialising in chicken!

But hey, if we’re talking about food quality, Popeyes trumps its biggest competitor any day. Not only are the chicken and fries tastier and crispier, they are less oily, too.

3-piece chicken combo
S$9.80
Rating:

For the chicken flavours, you have the choice of New Orleans Spicy or Louisiana Mild. I haven’t had the chance to savour the buttermilk biscuits and mashed potatoes (they ran out), but I hear they are amazing!

Each time I eat the KFC fried or popcorn chicken, the breaded crispy skin is very thick and, frankly, not very crispy or appetising. After a while, I just feel like I am chewing on cardboard. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Popeyes’ chicken is different; the skin is light, crispy and simply a joy to eat. What’s more, it retains that amazing crispiness even long after I’ve taken a hundred photos of it!

Just as satisfying are the French fries. There’s really no excuse when they’re already soggy when you’ve only *just* ordered them off the counter. That’s McDonald’s and KFC I’m talking about.

While the restaurant was originally named after the fictional detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in the movie, the French connection, Popeye the sailor eventually became the main character fronting the marketing efforts.

That’s also why you get to watch old Popeye’s cartoons while digging in! Very classic :) after Disney Naturally closed down, this is one other cartoon-themed eatery where parents can bring their kids.

Interesting titbit: the late founder Al Copeland amusingly claimed that he named the restaurant “Popeyes” because he was “too poor” to afford an apostrophe. Haha :)

I wish there were more Popeyes restaurants in Singapore besides the ones at Changi Airport and Singapore Flyer. For many people that need a quick fix of fried chicken, they have no choice but to head to the more ubiquitous KFC.

Update: New outlets have opened! See below.

Better yet, throw in home delivery, too! I’m sure Popeye’s killer biceps can handle that.

Have Your Say!
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
Where do you go when you want to taste the best fried chicken in Singapore? Share with us in the comments!

Popeyes ( Halal certified)
- Ang Mo Kio Jubilee Entertainment Centre
- Bedok Point
- Century Square
- Downtown East
- ION Orchard
- Orchard Xchange
- Punggol East
- Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3
- Singapore Flyer
- Square 2
- The Cathay

Website

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/popeyes/ | 64 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Astons Express – Delicious Western Food at Affordable Prices

Wine & Dine

Ang Mo Kio

Bedok

casual

Chinatown

Choa Chu Kang

Clementi

dinner

Ghim Moh

Hougang

Hougang Plaza

Jurong East

Little India

lunch

Sixth Avenue

Tampines

Upper Serangoon

Upper Thomson

western

Woodlands

It took me quite a while, but recently I finally stumbled upon one of the many Astons Express outlets. The concept reminds me of the wildly popular Botak Jones, with the plethora of meat and grill offerings in a modest coffee shop setting.

Yes, all the Astons Express outlets across the island are situated at coffee shops. That means you pay cheap, cheap coffee shop prices! Not bad at all, considering the fact that they have also passed our taste test with flying colours.

The main courses include a large variety of chicken cutlets, steaks and burgers. For each main course you get to select two sides, including coleslaw, French fries, onion rings, baked potato, mashed potato, etc. I love to be given the freedom of choice!

Teriyaki chicken (with French fries and onion rings)
S$5.90
Rating:

Ever a chicken fan, I go for the teriyaki chicken with the sides of French fries and onion rings. Maybe I’m just really easy to please, but everything about it is good! The chicken is a thick and juicy slab of meat. The fries are yummy with red pepper powder sprinkled all over. Unlike the soggy fries I have had at many places, these remain extra crispy even after I’m done with the chicken!

Also worth mentioning are the onion rings. They help me realise that all my life I’ve been eating way too few of them!

Of course, the teriyaki sauce is irresistible too. In fact, my only gripe is that there is too little of it. I know some sellers like to nag at you when you ask for more sauce. But next time I’m gonna ask anyway. Yes, I will be back.

Crispy chicken (with French fries and mashed potato)
S$5.90
Rating:

The crispy chicken is your usual deep-fried chicken cutlet from western food stalls. It’s nothing special, except that boy, do you get a huge cutlet! It’s about fifty percent bigger than my teriyaki chicken! Can it be that ladies get a smaller cut of meat than guys? I hear some sellers do have such a practice, although I’m not sure whether it holds true in this case.

Oh by the way, the side of mashed potato is yum-yum. See? I’m easy to please!

Astons Express
Website

Opening hours: 11am – 10pm daily

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/astons-express/ | 13 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Mr. Teh Tarik Cartel – More Than Just Teh

Wine & Dine

Ang Mo Kio

Bedok

casual

Changi

East Coast Park

Far East Square

Geylang

Halal

Indian

Jurong West

Malay

Raffles Place

Singaporean

supper

Tampines

Woodlands

Calling all night owls! This additional condiment makes a world of difference.

Plus, the way they squeeze it in a cute checkered pattern over the French bread is just neat!

Oh by the way, if you aren’t too familiar with this dish, check out my earlier writeup on how roti john came about and got its name. But in this case, I must say that the tree looks awesome in the day too!

And my, doesn’t the tree look all cheery? The layering of balls in red, yellow and blue, and the candy canes lined up neatly side by side really gives the cute to its overall look.

Of course, there’s the jolly old man himself. It’s the little pushcart stall with the green roof that sells all kinds of teh (tea). People would sit around on wooden stools to enjoy their drinks.

At least, that’s how I remember it.

When we paid a visit recently, we found that Mr. Teh Tarik has upgraded itself to Mr. Teh Tarik Cartel. No longer is it a modest little pushcart in the outdoors. Now, it occupies an actual stall unit in the Far East Square building!

But if you ask me, I still prefer its old look. There is somewhat of a 60s feel when you queue up at a wooden pushcart stall, purchase your drink and wait for the Indian seller to tarik (pull) your teh.

This is how Mr. Teh Tarik looks like in its (his?) former days. People would drink their teh under big umbrellas.

Still, it’s always a good thing to see a thriving business being able to upgrade itself! In fact, this reminds me very much of the game lemonade tycoon.

I used to run a little lemonade stall in the game. Similarly, I started out with a tiny lemonade pushcart and eventually was able to afford an air-conditioned stall with multiple upgrades! Haha!

But I digress. At Mr. Teh Tarik Cartel, you can enjoy both hot and cold drinks, including the Milo Dinosaur and Horlicks dinosaur! Now what the heck am I talking about? Botak Jones, of course.

Botak Jones is the brainchild of an American that promises to bring authentic American food to the heartland. The Ang Mo Kio branch is its second branch, after Tuas. Business here is so good, many customers actually wait around patiently until the stall opens at 12 noon. With all the hype, the food had better be damn good!

The menu was made up of sheets of photocopied yellow paper stapled together. And it sure was an extensive one! Every item had a descriptive paragraph that followed, written in a light-hearted and very informal style. They also had the menu on a chalkboard right in front of the stall.

The staff were all extremely energetic and friendly, taking care to recommend various dishes on hearing that I don’t eat beef. One of the dishes they recommended was the Swanky Franky hot dog. Lucky for me it was available in chicken too. So that was what I had!

Swanky Franky
S$9 for set meal (includes chips & coleslaw)
Rating:

It was wrapped in bacon and had melted cheddar cheese on top! Doesn’t that sound appetising? I did a double take when I saw the gargantuan serving size. That was easily the largest hot dog I have ever seen! Throw in the hot dog bun and the heap of chips at the side, I could finish just three quarters of the food. It was an American serving all right!

Taste-wise I didn’t actually think the hot dog was any special. But thanks to good customer service, we were given many bottles of mustard and varied sauces that helped a lot. I really liked the chips though — thick, crispy, fluffy on the inside, and lightly dusted with Botak Jones’ own spice mix. Yum!

The Double Botak, with Cheese & Whoopass Con Carne
S$9 for set meal (includes chips & coleslaw) + $1 for Cheese + $2.50 for Whoopass Con Carne

Check THAT out! My friend ordered his usual double Botak burger with add-ons of cheese and Whoopass con carne. Boy, it was huge! I sampled a little of the beef patty and found it to be delightfully tender.

Air Flown NZ Ribeye Steak (medium rare, served with chips & coleslaw)
S$13 for 200 grams
Rating:

Same goes for the steak. It was extremely tender. Chewy, but not tough. Marinaded nicely and seared carefully in such a way that the rich juices ooze out as you chew. This was one good quality steak! And don’t you just love those cross patterns?

Those daring slogans on their staff’s shirts and aprons are pretty cool too. Throughout our meal the staff were very friendly. They would ask us how the food was, etc. We actually spotted the boss himself at the coffee shop. But he may have been just a random botak (bald) dude.

Botak Jones
Non-Halal outlets:
- 531 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, Tel: +65 6755 1225
- 412 Bedok North Ave 2, Tel: +65 6243 9225
- 325 Clementi Ave 5 #01-129, Tel: +65 6774 1225
- 118 Depot Lane #01-02 Stall 10, Tel: +65 6272 3225
- Orchard Youth Park, Tel: 121 Somerset Road, Tel: +65 6735 0225
- 214 Serangoon Avenue 4, Tel: +65 6858 1225
- 970A Toa Payoh North, Tel: +65 6258 6225

Halal outlets:
- 233 Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 #01-53, Tel: +65 6899 8225
- 5 Changi Village Road #01-2021, Tel: +65 6542 7225
- Simpang Bedok, Tel: 357/359 Bedok Road, Tel: +65 6243 0225
- 892C Woodlands Drive 50, Tel: Stall 4, Tel: +65 6894 4225

Website

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/botak-jones/ | 19 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net
