Bonus Christmas Tree of the Day (2011 Edition) – The Heineken Social Christmas Tree

We thought the Heineken Social Christmas Tree is too good not to post, so here it is as the bonus tree in our Christmas Tree of the Day 2011 series. Bet you thought that was the end, didn’t you?

The Dutch beer brewing company has created this uber cool Christmas tree at Clarke Quay Singapore. This digital art installation towers at 11 metres. Its 48 LCD screens showcase Christmas greetings exchanged by Facebook users around the world.

You can create your own virtual tree by adding photos and messages and tagging your friends using the Facebook app. Your customised greetings will then be broadcast to the public on the Heineken Social Christmas Tree. Pretty futuristic isn’t it?

Christmas Tree of the Day #12 (2011 Edition) – White Artsy Christmas at Esplanade

Keep an eye out for this unique Christmas tree when you visit Esplanade, a performing arts venue in Singapore. Comprising Japanese-style lanterns, this tree is illuminated with a beautiful glow from within. The lanterns have been given an extra Christmasy touch by their snowflake patterns, made of hologram aluminium foil.

We like the way that the unusually shaped tree is juxtaposed with the eccentrically shaped building (like durians) in the background. If you like, you can even walk right through the tree via its walkway.

Christmas Tree of the Day #11 (2011 Edition) – Colours of Christmas

It’s Christmas eve! Are you still making last minute plans for the holiday? Check out our Christmas dining section for some ideas. Meanwhile, let’s continue on our Christmas Tree of the Day 2011 series, which is coming to an end really soon.

One of the more unusual Christmas trees you would find in Singapore this year is at neighbourhood mall Tiong Bahru Plaza.

The colourful tree boasts gold leaves decorated with snowflakes and a shiny star as the crown. Green and purple hummingbirds singing musical notes can be seen perched on it. So this tree isn’t the most elegant or the prettiest, but it sure as heck is one head-turner!

That’s O’Coffee Club in the background, which sells some really beautiful artisan cakes. That may be just the thing to satiate your sweet tooth this Christmas.

Christmas Tree of the Day #10 (2011 Edition) – Coca-Cola Christmas Tree

When you think of Coca-Cola at Christmas, the image that comes to mind is probably that of polar bears holding coke bottles. Did you know that the beverage king also has a Christmas tree in Singapore this festive season?

You will find the Coca-Cola Christmas tree at popular teen hangout Orchard Cineleisure. The tree’s décor is kept simple with hanging ornaments that include Coca-Cola bottles, trucks and gift boxes interspersed with red and gold baubles. In place of the usual star at its tip is a round Coca-Cola logo. The tree sits on a base of a striking red Coca-Cola cube.

That’s not the only Coca-Cola-branded item you would find at the mall. Near its entrance, the Coca-Cola bear can be seen greeting shoppers.

While we’re on the subject of Coca-Cola Christmas trees, here’s another amazing Coca-Cola tree that I spotted in Bangkok Christmas 2009. It’s fully made out of aluminium drink cans!

Christmas Tree of the Day #9 (2011 Edition) – Santa Claus Transformer

Santa Claus is coming to town! At one shopping mall in Singapore, he has manifested as a gigantic Christmas tree.

“You better watch out” for this unique Santa tree at Harbourfront Centre. To all of you Transformers fans, does this tree remind you of a Transformer? The pointy top of the artificial fir tree makes a perfect hat for him, don’t you think?

Christmas Tree of the Day #8 (2011 Edition) – Let It Snow!

It has started snowing in Singapore!

The snow, of course, is machine-generated foam that falls at Tanglin Mall nightly. The artificial snowfall is undoubtedly the highlight of the shopping mall at Christmas, drawing families and kids to frolic in the foamy fun.

At the centrepiece is the towering Christmas tree decorated with flowing red drapes that cascade down from the top. Red baubles and poinsettia leaves are interspersed on the tree canopy, forming a simple, yet unique Christmas tree design.

Reindeer and snowman statues on either side of the walkway welcome visitors to the mall.

Christmas Tree of the Day #7 (2011 Edition) – Teddy Bear Tree at The Fullerton Hotel

Whoever it was that first thought up the idea of building Christmas trees out of teddy bears, he/she deserves some credit for giving us something this adorable to look at at Christmas.

Every Christmas, there is at least one such teddy bear tree in town, usually the colourful bear trees at Takashimaya or the uber cuddly tree at Conrad Centennial Singapore.

This year, I am so happy to see a new teddy bear tree. You can admire it at The Fullerton Hotel. The bears are clad in cute little ~~sailor and safari costumes~~ bellhop and postmaster uniforms, surrounded by a ring of presents, poinsettia leaves and translucent lace. Very classy.

Take a tour around the hotel and you will spot a few more smaller trees. These trees are topped with the same adorable bears, but with varying designs overall.

Apart from the teddy bear trees, the hotel’s Christmas décor is also gorgeous, featuring a conventional red, green and colour palette.

At night, fairy lights coiling round the palm trees in front of the hotel are turned on, bathing the colonial architecture in beautiful Christmas light.

Christmas Tree of the Day #6 (2011 Edition) – Blue Christmas at The Central

Have you ever seen a Christmas tree with blue leaves?

If you head to The Central (Clarke Quay) this Christmas, you would be welcomed by several blue trees at the mall’s entrances, flanked by large glittering golden baubles.

I really dig the shade of turquoise on these trees, with the golden stars at their tips as the icing on the cake.

For those of you who have been following our Christmas Tree of the Day series in recent years, you would have noticed that The Central has displayed several unusual and sci-fi looking trees during past Christmases. In fact, they had a blue Christmas tree in 2010, too.

Christmas Tree of the Day #5 (2011 Edition) – Orchard Road’s Best Dressed Building

Every Christmas, various malls along the Orchard Road shopping belt in Singapore would compete for the “Best Dressed Building” award. The participating buildings are judged based on their day and night effects, and the use of eco-friendly features.

This Christmas, the “Best Dressed Building” is Orchard Central.

The mall’s Christmas tree sports a bold pink, silver and black colour scheme, comprising alternating layers of baubles and snowflakes. It bears a slight resemblance to the Christmas tree at VivoCity in 2006.

Part of the décor is made with 850 recycled Pink Dolphin bottles, which probably did some magic to help the mall clinch the title.

We are also impressed with the mall’s indoor Christmas décor. At the Discovery Walk on the ground floor, a Christmas marketplace has been set up for the festive season.

It almost looks as though a small village has been built within the mall!

Based on my personal experience, it is usually rather quiet at Orchard Central. With this shiny new award, I hope it draws more curious shoppers to the mall this Christmas.

Christmas Tree of the Day #4 (2011 Edition) – Candylicious Christmas at Suntec City Mall

The sweetest Christmas tree for 2011 has to be the candylicious tree at Suntec City Mall. Topped with a snowflake, this three-tiered tree is all covered in colourful baubles, sweets and lollipops. Look closer and you would see that even its trunk is made up of candy canes!

Apart from the big candy tree at the mall’s entrance near the underpass, smaller trees can be seen adding a dash of colour to various parts of the mall.

The pink and white colour scheme and bright candy colours sure add to the cheery spirit of Christmas.

That’s Old Town White Coffee, a café chain from Malaysia that sells traditional coffee, toast and local dishes.

At night, the tree is lit in unconventional colours of magenta and blue, which aren’t normally found on the traditional Christmas palette.

Christmas Tree of the Day #3 (2011 Edition) – Magical Tree at Forum the Shopping Mall

One of my favourite Christmas trees this year is located at Forum the Shopping Mall. Motorists driving past and pedestrians walking along the busy Orchard Road shopping district in Singapore would be able to admire this cutesy tree at the mall entrance.

This tree boasts a whimsical theme. We’re talking giant mushrooms and flying fairies playing musical instruments.

Candy canes, gift boxes, red baubles and gold baubles are part of the more conventional decorations on the tree.

Christmas Tree of the Day #2 (2011 Edition) – Towering Tree on VivoCity Rooftop

VivoCity, the largest shopping mall in Singapore also has one of the tallest Christmas trees every holiday. Situated at the mall’s popular rooftop sky park, the massive tree towers over you at 105 feet.

Even if you are looking across the sea from the neighbouring Sentosa island, you would be able to spot this tree.

The décor is simplistic — nothing more than an eight-pointed star atop and a couple of gold bands wrapping around the canopy.

At night, the gigantic tree turns into a spectacle with thousands of blue fairy lights covering its surface almost completely. If you’d like to get up close, you can enter the walkway circling around the tree base.

Christmas Tree of the Day #1 (2011 Edition) – Black and Gold Carousel

The Christmas Tree of the Day series is back for 2011! To celebrate Christmas, each day we will feature one unique Christmas tree in Singapore.

With this series already into its 6th year, this Christmas we are collaborating with Flickr user Mr. Choo Yut Shing to bring you this showcase. I have been a huge fan of Mr. Choo’s photography in recent years; through his eyes you will start to see this city in a new light. It is an honour that he has graciously agreed to have his brilliant Christmas pieces featured on Sparklette.

Opening this year’s series is the classy Christmas tree erected at Paragon Shopping Centre. All the photos you see here are taken by Mr. Choo himself.

Unlike the conventional green and white Christmas trees, this tree deviates from the norm by being decked out in contrasting colours of black and gold, speckled with shiny baubles and large pointy stars. Dark carousel horses with gold manes, hooves and tails surround the tree at its base.

Christmas Tree of the Day #12 (2010 Edition) – Santa Claus Is Coming to Town!

When I first saw this Christmas tree, I didn’t really see it. What do I mean? Well, my attention was entirely focused on the larger than life-sized Santa Claus at its base, with equally gigantic hands to match. Jolly old St. Nicholas is so huge he literally wears the Christmas tree as his pointy hat!

What is the tune that automatically pops into your head when you see this?

Why, Santa Claus is coming to town, of course! Catch Santa at the eco-friendly City Square Mall on the fringe of Little India.

To make Santa appear friendlier and less intimidating, he even blows cute bubbles!

Christmas Tree of the Day #11 (2010 Edition) – Precious Moments [Video]

Ever since they were created by Sam Butcher in the 1970s, Precious Moments figurines have become popular collectible items worldwide. The porcelain figurines are usually of chubby children with teardrop-shaped eyes and are hand painted in pastel colours.

This Christmas, you can gaze at these adorable life-sized cherub-like angels from Precious Moments perched on one Christmas tree. The precious Christmas tree is truly one of its kind.

You can find it at the entrance of Jurong Point Shopping Centre accompanied by a handful of smaller trees at its side.

The base of the tree takes a hexagonal shape, with each side painted in the trademark pastel colours and the children depicted in various scenes.

Did you know that Precious Moments first started out as art on a line of greeting cards and posters in the early 1970s? They became wildly popular and demand grew. In 1978, the first 21 original Precious Moments bisque porcelain figurines were introduced to the market.

The collection is now well over 1,500 pieces with new figurines introduced each year. Each year 20 to 40 figurines are produced and 12 to 20 existing figurines will be retired from production. When the figurines are officially retired, the mold is broken never to be produced again.

Apart from the cute characters, the Christmas tree is adorned with sweets, lollipops, ribbons, baubles and gingerbread cookies.

Enter the mall and you would find a bright pink train with more Precious Moments characters.

At hourly intervals, there would be a little musical complete with popular Christmas tunes, man-made snowflakes and bubbles! Catch the 4 minute show in this video.

For me, this has to be the most gorgeous Christmas tree this year! What do you think?

Christmas Tree of the Day #10 (2010 Edition) – Multi-Coloured Tree at Orchard Cineleisure

The tenth tree in the Christmas Tree of the Day series for 2010 is a peculiar one. While it may not be the most beautiful or elegant Christmas tree around, it certainly is one of the most eye-catching ones.

Standing tall at the basement of popular teen hangout Orchard Cineleisure, the colourful tree towers past the second and third levels of the mall. The tree is segmented into six tiers, each one in a striking colour. Instead of the usual Christmas ornaments, cartoon characters are pasted all over the tree. Do you recognise any of them?

Christmas Tree of the Day #9 (2010 Edition) – A Gingerbread Wonderland at Harbourfront Centre

Gingerbread is a popular Christmas treat all over the world, appearing in many different forms such as cookies and houses, often accompanied by colourful candies and white icing.

At the Harbourfront Centre shopping mall in Singapore, gingerbread is used as the theme this Christmas. There are life-sized gingerbread houses and even a gingerbread train.

On the Christmas tree, you would find several gingerbread stars that resemble large cookies. Other yummy treats on it include candy canes and ornaments like baubles in red, purple, orange and green.

The little gingerbread wonderland is a great place if you are looking for photographic opportunities this holiday. No word on whether any of it is edible though!

Christmas Tree of the Day #8 (2010 Edition) – Childhood Memories at Lot One Shoppers’ Mall

Do you remember your first teddy bear? I remember mine. My dad bought it for me when I was 4. At that age, the teddy bear was not much bigger than me. I still recall that it wore a deep green shirt with red trimmings over its coat of brown fur.

Childhood toys such as the cuddly teddy bear are some of the ornaments you would find on this Christmas tree at Lot One Shoppers’ Mall. The neighbourhood mall at Choa Chu Kang has erected a tree decorated in bright, vivid colours and a theme of toys and innocence.

In place of the usual sparkly streamers that coil around the tree are wooden toy trains and carriages in red, blue and yellow. Other ornaments include the adorable teddy bears, shiny baubles and gold stars.

Christmas Tree of the Day #7 (2010 Edition) – Massive White Tree at ION Orchard

Aaaaand… we’re now into the second half of the Christmas Tree of the Day series for 2010!

Today’s Christmas tree of the day is one of the most striking in town. If you have been to Orchard Road this holiday season, you would likely have seen this tree. Standing tall at the entrance of the ION Orchard shopping mall is this massive white tree.

At night, the tree is lit in purplish pink while decked with hundreds of silver disco balls! In the words of Austin Powers, they’re groovy baby! Doesn’t this tree also remind you of cotton candy? Speaking of that, nothing beats this adorable pink tree from The Cathay in 2006!

There is a small entrance at the base that allows you to walk through the tree. I have not tried that yet, so if any of you knows what’s in there, don’t forget to let us all know in the comments!

Instead of the usual star, this white giant is topped with a snowflake ornament. Beautiful!

Christmas Tree of the Day #6 (2010 Edition) – Five-Tiered Tree at West Mall

Set within the heart of Bukit Batok Central since 1998, West Mall is the place where nearby residents can go for shopping and dining activities.

While it may not be one of the most upmarket or popular malls in town, the heartland mall has done a commendable job with its Christmas tree showcase this season. Its centrepiece is a unique five-tiered tree that resembles a wedding cake.

Large bands with floral and snowflake patterns wrap around the tree like ribbons adorning a gift box. More snowflakes and hundreds of shiny baubles in pink and silver decorate the tree canopy, which is finally topped by a multi-pointed star.

The Christmas tree sits atop a temporary shelter that houses a mini Christmas bazaar. What a good way to maximise the limited space!
