As it turns out, the art of Turkey stuffing is lost not just with my family but also at the place where I got the Turkey — the stuffing did not taste good! But! I’m not gonna complain further because that wouldn’t be very Christmasy, would it? The only thing that matters is that we got together as a family to have a Christmas lunch. And that’s what counts. Yum! Must have Christmas log cake too. A Christmas just isn’t complete without a log cake! And it must be a chocolate cake of course. None of those fancy durian or mocha flavours please! I have been wondering why log cakes feature heavily in Christmas. When we arrived the place was already teeming with people. In the robing room a nice lady helped me with my gown. I may never get married this lifetime so this gown may just be the most important gown in my life! It had to look right!

Getting the hood (which is tangerine for computer science graduates) to look right on my robe was quite tricky. Moreover the board cap made me look weird!

While waiting for the ceremony to commence, a reflections video was played on the big screen onstage. It included five seconds of my video recorded interview. Woohoo! It was mighty short but at least I appeared! I was worried they would leave me out altogether.

On with the ceremony. Each of us had a barcoded card that was scanned into the computer before we went onstage to collect our scrolls. It determined the order in which we went up. I was more concerned about not tripping over onstage and making a fool of myself in front of everyone. Phew! Nothing of that sort happened!

The guy who presented us with our scrolls (who was he?) seemed quite reluctant to give me mine! I shook his hand and he stared back at me with a blank look for like two seconds before handing me my scroll. What was up with that? He didn’t seem too bright!

And finally it was over. Actually it was over pretty quick. Balloons and golden ribbons rained down on us as the officiator announced the end of the ceremony. Hundreds and thousands of balloons in the colours of the rainbow! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple. Hooray!

At the lobby everyone was taking pictures and attacking the trays of food. The chocolate éclairs were the biggest hit and got polished off very quickly. I spent the next hour taking photos instead. Unfortunately many of the pictures turned out overexposed and looked pretty screwy.

That’s isaac and mayi, from the computing club.

Liquan, who is currently undergoing reservist training, hence explaining the short hair. It took me five seconds to recognise who he was when he called out my name! Anyway he is one of those guys blessed with smooth baby skin that girls would kill for.

When I was still in school, people who are already working kept telling me to “enjoy my school life”. Because once you start working, you would find that school life is a blessing. What a load of bullcrap! I am totally loving work life even though I do feel exhausted most of the time. If I had to choose between work or studies, I would choose work in a heartbeat. Would I ever go back to school? Never!

So here endeth my academic life. The next phase in my life has already started.

I can’t wait!

These posts may be related

Christmas Lunch with My Family
11,698

Mother’s Day 2006
11,190

Seeing Red
8,297

Pengerang 2006
12,207

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/news/graduation/ | 22 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Mother’s Day 2006

Holidays

family

Okay this is a long belated entry. A decade ago, Singapore was still in the transitlink card or phonecard collecting frenzy. Everytime a new limited edition card or set of cards was released, people queued for hours, and sometimes even days just to get hold of these cards.

i remember many a time when I was young, I queued with my Mom overnight along with thousands of other people just to buy the limited edition phonecard that was limited to the first 2000 people. I also remember the numerous times I had tagged along with my Mom to go shopping for these cards all over the island. My brother didn’t share the same passion. But I was fascinated by the beautiful designs and colours on these cards. My Mom says that when she dies, she wouldn’t have much money to leave us. All she would have would be these collections.

nowadays, Singaporeans don’t really collect these cards anymore. So in recent years, my Mom started collecting red packets (you know, the ang pow you get your money in every Chinese New Year). I even spent the whole of today helping her display the red packets nicely in albums. She is very proud of her collection, but she isn’t selfish about it. She shares whatever she has with her fellow red packet collecting friends. This wouldn’t be an interesting blog entry to most people, but I’m blogging it because it would make my Mom happy.

One thing to note is that my Mom only collects commercial red packets, that means only those released by companies. Store-bought red packets are a no-no. They may look more beautiful but are simply meaningless, she says.

Some red packets aren’t actually red, but come in various unique colours such as yellow. I always get excited when I come across the uniquely coloured ones. One of my favourites is this one from starhub, featuring their mascot dog, sparky.

There are purple and pink packets too. I simply love the purple one from cadbury chocolate! Look, there’s even one from awfully chocolate. Anyone knows where this shop is?

The pink ones are so pretty too! One from tian po jewellery…

… Another one from the Taiwan shihlin street snacks.

There are red packets released by fast food restaurants.

The ultra adorable qoo drinks!

And our favourite m&m’s!

One rather unique red packet is this very narrowly shaped one from the Tung Lok group of restaurants. This orange packet is so narrow that you can’t fit in a dollar note without folding it. I think it’s only meant to hold coins.

Also, in these couple of years, gold packets are gaining in popularity and more companies are releasing those.

I think the gold packets give off a more classy and “expensive” feeling. My favourite is this one from American express that has a pop-up feel to it.

Last but not least, here’s one for the guys.

Well organising, arranging and displaying the hundreds or even thousands of different red packets was exhausting and sure took up a lot of time! But I was glad as it allowed my Mom and I to spend some time together. We had dinner at the keng eng kee seafood place, in the Alexandra Village vicinity. Everyone please do not go there!

the food was expensive, it took damn long for the food to be served, and it wasn’t exactly worth waiting for! One couple seated right behind us walked away in a huff after waiting a long time for their food that never came. At 8pm, I was already feeling super hungry as I barely ate anything the entire day. And a hungry wanting is a cranky wanting. I managed to get our food served immediately.

The fried rolls came first, each one containing egg, prawn, vegetable, ham and mushroom. To their credit, the dish was actually very delicious! But then again, it ought to be since they called it their house specialty. Moreover, anything that is deep-fried tends to taste good. And it cost 9 bucks.

Next came the sweet and sour chicken balls. It wasn’t good. And I don’t see no balls. 8 bucks for the dish.

The last dish we ordered was sambal kang kong. But when it came, it wasn’t sambal at all! We asked the waitress about it, who admitted the mistake but asked if we could just let it go. My Mom was ready to agree but I said no way man. We ordered sambal kang kong and that’s what we were getting. No matter how busy they were, that was not a good reason for us to live with their mistake. The kang kong cost 6 bucks.

the total bill came up to $25.60. $23 for the food, 50 cents per bowl of rice, 20 cents per towel, and $1.20 for a can of barley. Amount of time wasted: irrecoverable. Everyone please do not go to this place. The food sucks, the service sucks, and they don’t even charge cheaply. Remember, it’s keng eng kee seafood. Don’t go there! *ROARRR*

All right again for the 1035263th time, please vote for me at blogfest 2006. Instructions are on the right. Oh yeah if anyone has any red packet to spare, please contact me too. My Mom and I would both be delighted!

These posts may be related

Winners of Chinese New Year Giveaway: Spring Blossoms Cupcakes from MetroCakes
624

PrimaDéli – Pineapple-shaped Pineapple Tarts (and regular ones too)
817

Winners of Chinese New Year Giveaway: 3x Salmon Yusheng from Paradise Group
555

Goodwood Park Hotel – Creative & Memorable Chinese New Year Treats
1,752

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/lifestyle/holiday/seeing-red/ | 22 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Pengerang 2006

Malaysia

family

Pengerang

Hello people, I’m back from relative visiting in Pengerang. It was the first time we were driving there. The exact location of my relatives’ place is sungai rengit in Pengerang, which is part of Johor. Avid cyclists would surely have heard of Pengerang because the long, straight and mostly empty roads are great for cycling.

In previous years, we would take a ferry from Changi ferry terminal (red line) and then take a cab from the Malaysian ferry terminal to sungai rengit (red hashed line). This time we decided to drive in because my cousin who knew the way was driving in as well, so we could tail his car all the way.

Driving in was a bad choice, because the journey was freaking long! Check out the green line! It goes a long way round Johor before finally reaching Pengerang! And let’s not even mention the jam at the customs. In total the car journey took around three hours when the usual boat journey would take little longer than an hour.

But well, along the way we came across interesting sights. Saw my favourite hangout in Johor, City Square. And there was the newly opened aeon tebrau city too. It’s the largest shopping mall in Malaysia outside of Kuala Lumpur, and it really did look huge! What shows in the picture below is probably only 25% of the entire length of the mall. I wanna go there!

Then there’s also an entire carrefour complex.

That marks the more happening part of the car journey. Once we got onto the road that goes toward desaru and sungai rengit, it was just hills, trees and grass all the way.

The vehicle in front is my cousin’s. We tailed him throughout the entire journey.

Greenery, greenery…

…and more greenery! The roads there were not very developed and there was no street lamp at all. Driving at night would be in total darkness if not for the vehicle lights. Animal sightings were also common. We had seen mostly cows, but one time we saw a bunch of totally adorable baby monkeys running dangerously along the road. I never liked monkeys but the baby ones we sighted were abolutely precious! My brother remarked that along the journey, he had already seen several dead dogs, cats and monkeys on the road. How pitiful!

My relatives live in a shophouse and they are the sole distributors of newspapers in the town. But their shop was closed for business during Chinese New Year. The front was the shop and the back was the double storey residential area. They would be tearing the place down and building a four-storey house in its place. This would take a whole year to complete so next year, we would not be visiting them anymore.

In sungei rengit, shophouses like these are very common. For a rather small town with a small population, it had surprisingly many visitors, and hence the need for hotels. Hotels there were not the classy, fancy kind but more like shophouse inns. Notice the little bright pink stall. That’s the ramly burger stall!

Every year, we stay at tai hoe hotel which isn’t great, but looks the best among all the others there.

(Update: in February 2008, we stayed at tai hoe hotel again for one night during the Chinese New Year holiday. In the middle of the night, we were woken up by cops who knocked on our door and checked our IDs. The lady boss of the hotel claimed it was a “routine check”. But we asked around and realised that just months back, she had been fined and jailed for running a prostitution ring within the same hotel (with young girls from Indonesia)! Needless to say, we were taken aback and extremely disgusted when we heard that. So everyone, please boycott this hotel!)

This time, we found that the lady hotel owner had decided to implement a security card system. Every room was given one card regardless of how many there were to a room. And without that card, no one could even enter the hotel. Not just the hotel room, but the hotel itself! There were four of us with just one card. That sparked some inconvenience.

Directly outside the hotel was a taxi stand where people could go to places like kota tinggi, a town outside of sungai rengit that is known for its waterfalls. There wasn’t much to see or to do in sungai rengit. In fact the most happening place there would be this sole fast food restaurant over there, marrybrown. It used to be my favourite hangout whenever I was in Pengerang. I stopped going there after falling in love with those sweet ramly burgers.

Oh yeah of course there is the beach. I went there at low tide hoping to collect some seashells.

And the tide was super low, which was great. The largest seashells are found furthest away from dry land. The first large seashell I came across got me pretty excited. But as I flipped it over, I sensed that the shell wasn’t hollow. And sure enough a few moments later, something green with tentacles or legs showed itself, making me jump a few metres back in fright.

It was disgusting! I had collected many seashells before but that was the first time I found one with a live animal within. I had no idea what the animal was because it only revealed itself partially and didn’t crawl out of the shell. Anyone has any idea? Seeing part of it already gave me goosebumps. Argh! I didn’t collect any seashell in the end.

I also noticed tiny holes like these in the wet sand. I think crabs live in them. And there were MANY such holes around! I didn’t get to see any crab though.

Something interesting I came across were these track marks on the sand. They were quite messed up so I couldn’t tell if they were made by birds. But they looked four or five-pointed.

Went back to the same place where i found a couple of baby kittens last year. The kittens weren’t there this time. What greeted me were some very fast running, colourful roosters instead.

Overall, sungei rengit is a town with very laid-back people. A pity there isn’t much to see or do around the place.

What I love most is that ramly burger stall. They put all the fake ramly burgers in Singapore to shame! The ramly burgers sold in Singapore taste nothing like the real thing. My only regret is that I got to eat just one ramly burger during this short trip.

Anyway I only stayed there for a day or so and most of it was spent exploring the town, at my relatives’ place, or back in my hotel room relaxing and watching chicken little. I came back the very next day and the journey took four hours this time. There was a huge jam at the Johor City Square and it was excruciating because I needed to pee so bad. But I made it all the way back home.

To make up for the lack of ramly burgers and satay I ate in Pengerang, the first thing I ate when I got back to Singapore was satay from my favourite stalls number 7 and 8 at Lau Pa Sat.

And sting ray! We ate from the stall called “ming yen” because the stall we usually patronised was still closed for Chinese New Year. The stingray itself wasn’t exactly fresh, but the sambal chilli was good.

And for lunch today, it was a huge bucketful of crispy chicken, chicken nuggets and chicken popcorn from KFC. Couldn’t finish all the chicken obviously, so it’s still sitting in my kitchen. Chicken is probably the only kind of meat I eat.

These posts may be related

Pengerang (Day 1)
16,628

Jade Garden Seafood Corner – Fresh Crabs & Lobsters in Pengerang
5,066

Ah Koong Restaurant – Famous Fish Ball Noodles in Malaysia
2,768

Christmas Lunch with My Family
11,698

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/malaysia/pengerang-2006/ | 16 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Ramblings

family

Hello people, I’m back to blogging again. So don’t worry, it wouldn’t be the last you see of her; she would be blogging again soon!

I’m not doing too well. This is my final semester and I just have this feeling that I would be coming out of the school of computing with nothing learnt. It’s quite depressing. Lately, I’ve been wondering how I can get through this last semester and what lies in store for me after graduation. Up until now, I have no idea what career path to take. The irony about being in the school of computing is that it has made me hate computing, and I doubt I would enter the IT field next time. What I really love is doing design, or writing, and I don’t have the relevant degree for either of these.

For the final year project, we have formed teams of six to develop an integrated resort management system using j2ee. We held our first group discussion on Friday. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t contribute much, and I fear it would continue to be that way. What I can contribute is probably in terms of design. I would love to design the whole web portal that is required. The design component would play a part of the grading, but it is still hardly the emphasis of this project.

I just feel so goddamn depressed.

But a yummy slice of cheesecake never fails to cheer me up. Following that depressing four-hour-long discussion was dinner at secret recipe. The strawberry shake was not too sweet so that’s good.

Tom yam spaghetti. I seemed to have eaten it before at the secret recipe outlet in City Square, Johor Bahru before. It was not too shabby.

And the yummy cheeze chocolate cake! Secret recipe serves the best cheesecakes in town man, really. The cream cheese filling is very rich, yet light at the same time so you don’t get sick eating it.

Speaking of food, udon-bo at the Takashimaya food basement serves a mean chicken teri don with lotsa chicken meat, for only $4.50! It comes with a bowl of miso soup too. Cheap! People should hurry there before they raise their prices.

I’m also having this tcc craze lately and visiting the tcc boutiques every opportunity I get. I’m trying to accumulate enough receipts to become a tcc member. I love tcc for their wide selection of coffee, great service, and the artful design of all their boutiques; every single outlet looks unique! The café royal flambe I had yesterday was the first liquor coffee I ever had. Notice the blue flame around the sugar cube.

The coffee came first, to which the waitress added brandy from a fancy-looking golden flask. The sugar cube was placed on a teaspoon on the brim of the coffee cup. Once the sugar cube had soaked in the brandy, the waitress ignited it. After it melted, the waitress stirred it in, and the coffee was ready. Wow! A flaming coffee cocktail!

The mon cheri came with a leaf on the froth, and a pretty pink layer on the bottom. It looked good but tasted quite crappy and way too sweet.

Potato wedges.

Something interesting I spotted on the way home was this black sign on the ground at the bus stop near Orchard Cineleisure. It read “take drugs and you could spend 12 months in a cell this size with 2 other people.” it was probably about 2 by 1.5 meters. It surprised me because I thought jail cells were bigger than that, and this tiny cell was supposed to fit three people. It seemed a pretty effective way of letting people know that drug takers would not be let off lightly in Singapore.

Anyway, it’s my mom’s birthday today. We got her a cute-looking cake in the shape of a face from Angie the Choice. It tasted yummy! Not too sweet and the chocolate cream was heavenly. I finished my slice within a minute.

Mom looked so happy just now, like the smiling cake. Happy birthday, mom!

These posts may be related

Christmas Lunch with My Family
11,698

I Have Graduated!
4,612

Mother’s Day 2006
11,190

Seeing Red
8,297

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/ramblings/happy-birthday-mom/ | 4 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Pengerang (Day 1)

Malaysia

family

Pengerang

I woke up on Wednesday morning feeling all tired because I didn’t get much sleep at all. The background didn’t look this bare. But under my mum’s instructions, I removed the window panes and curtains from the background, and above is the finished product. Meanwhile, the ferry took only about a half hour to reach Pengerang.

From there, we took a cab to my relatives’ place in a small town called sungei rengit. I think avid cyclists would be familiar with this town, or at least Pengerang. The place is quite popular among cyclists, perhaps due to its lack of traffic along the long roads.

My relatives own a two-storey shophouse that sells snacks and wares and distributes newspapers throughout the whole town. Despite the nondescript outlook, they are easily one of the wealthiest families in the small town. The business has been running for many decades, started by my grandfather when he first came from China. Due to the festival, the shophouses were mostly not open for business. The black vehicle on the extreme right belongs to my boss roland, who was also there for the holiday.

Every Chinese New Year when we visit, we would rent the same room in this hotel nearby, called tai hoe. The interior of the room sucks and I can’t be bothered to even take photos of it. I’m still quite pissed that they removed the big mirror and wardrobe from our room this year, and didn’t even bother to tell us when we called to make the reservation. At least the windows provided a decent view. We could see the main street and also fireworks at night.

At night the vehicles make quite a bit of noise when everyone is trying to sleep, especially those darned motorcycles. There are no high rise buildings at all so everyone sleeps in low level buildings and is pretty much subjected to the same noise pollution.

Unlike Singapore where people need licenses for firecrackers and fireworks, in Malaysia it seems everyone is free to play with these. During the first day of Chinese New Year, everyone would release fireworks into the sky like nobody’s business. Obviously they aren’t as grand as those we see in Chinatown or during the national day parade, but they do add a good festive spirit.

I spent most of my first day in Pengerang sleeping, although I did remember to have two ramly burgers for dinner. That’s the one thing I cannot miss when I go to Pengerang. Eat first, diet later.

These posts may be related

Pengerang 2006
12,207

Jade Garden Seafood Corner – Fresh Crabs & Lobsters in Pengerang
5,066

Ah Koong Restaurant – Famous Fish Ball Noodles in Malaysia
2,768

Christmas Lunch with My Family
11,698

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/malaysia/pengerang-day-1/ | 5 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net
