Clarke Quay is one of the first choices for party animals when it comes to a night out in Singapore. But let’s face it, when you want good food at affordable prices, the place is nobody’s first choice. Or so I thought.

The Italian restaurant, Borgata Trattoria Osteria, at The Cannery, offers decent food at decent prices. Take your pick from the menu which offers familiar Italian favorites such as pizzas and pastas, as well as a selection of main courses.

Alfresco seating allows for people-watching along the river, or you can sink into the cushy indoor seats, too.

Portobello
SGD16++

Our choice for the starter is the Portobello which, as an ingredient, never seems to go wrong. Stuffed with vegetables and ladled over with cheese sauce, juices ooze out as you bite into the succulent mushroom. And that’s not even the best part. The sauce is a winner — rich, creamy and delicious with mushroom bits. Oh, Mama Mia!

Borgata
SGD22++

As for the pizzas, there are classics like the Margherita (tomatoes, mozzarella and basil) and the namesake pizza that comes with a United Colors of Benetton mix of toppings (mozzarella, ham, capsicum, Porcini and Parmesan cheese). The pizza is excellent, with a thin crust so crispy that you will have no problem finishing everything up — all 8 slices of them!

You may wanna go easy on the red chili pepper flakes though. They are flaming hot! Just a few specks are sufficient to make you wanna reach for that sparkling San Pellegrino. I kid you not!

Fusilli Porcini Gamberi Con Salsa Alla Zucca (sampling portion)

The fusilli with prawns and Porcini mushroom usually comes in pumpkin sauce, but the chef would be happy to switch it to tomato sauce if you prefer. The sauce is a tad tangy for me, although the sweetness of the plump prawns (neatly sliced along the sides so that the shells come off easily) helps to alleviate the tartness.

Tiramisu and profiterole (sampling portions)
SGD9++ for each

Do save some room for desserts. What kind of an Italian meal would this be without Tiramisu? The cake here is so light and airy, it practically melts in the mouth!

The profiterole is a delightful pastry puff, with chocolate coating on top and creamy milk chocolate at the centre.

Lava cake

The chocolate lava cake arrives in dramatic fashion. It is served in a ramekin, one of those porcelain cups used for baking. The staff would pour rum on top of it, then set it on fire. How’s that for a wow factor? Apart from the flaming drinks like Lamborghini and Waterfall, and the seafood platter at the Manhattan Fish Market, can you think of any more flaming drinks and dishes?

Unlike the regular chocolate fondant where only the core is filled with molten chocolate, the entire top half of the cake is gooey chocolate goodness! The portion is really ample, too. Throw in a cappuccino and I’m done!

Here’s one dessert that I love most in the world — chocolate lava cake. Not even a bellyful of pork ribs and buffalo wings can keep me from wanting it once the craving kicks in!

It just so happens that we were in the vicinity of Ricciotti Italian Deli & Pastry, a deli that serves home style Italian food and, more importantly, a superb selection of desserts. It’s the perfect place for some sweet delights, with a view of the Singapore river to boot!

Soffiato

Everyday the pastries are freshly baked by the in-house chef. Soffiato is the name of their chocolate lava cake. Sprinkled with icing sugar and decorated with chocolate syrup, the warm cake is served with a scoop of vanilla gelato.

Update: On another trip to Ricciotti, we ordered the Soffiato again. This time round, they served cookies and cream gelato. It seems that the gelato flavor isn’t fixed.

With a long spoon, I push through the thick wall of cake into the moist center, expecting to unleash a flood of molten dark chocolate. While most of it has been absorbed by the cake, you can still taste most of the warm, rich chocolate. Simply satisfying! We recommend popping by the deli early in the day when the confectionery is fresh out of the oven.

Morbida

Chocolate mousse takes the #2 spot on my dessert chart. It seems that not many places have it, so I’m delighted to see it on Ricciotti’s dessert menu in the form of the Morbida!

This is a chocoholic’s dream come true. Scraping the mound from top to bottom in layers reveals the rich and silky smooth mousse. Yum!

And that’s not even the best part.

Isn’t the Morbida just one spectacular dessert?

Nearing the center of the sponge cake, that’s when luscious liquid chocolate starts oozing out! Now THAT is a surprise!

There are even little pieces of hard chocolate scattered within the sticky chocolate goo. So you get chocolate in various textures and forms all in one pastry! Wow!

Of course, we have to wash down all that sinful but oh-so-good chocolate with water and coffee. Mmm… I like the latte. Creamy, velvety and not too milky. Throw in some coffee art and it’d be perfect!

Alternatively, you can have your pick from the well-stocked timber shelves of wines. Doesn’t the color scheme of dark brown and white enhance the mood of enjoying the chocolate bliss?

Don’t forget you can also buy the desserts as take-outs. Share them with your family! (there’s an outlet at China square, too.)

Addiction cures, however, are not included.

When you think of dining in Marina South, what comes to mind immediately would likely be cheap steamboat buffets. But did you know there is also a fine-dining restaurant in the same area?

Welcome to Pier Eleven, a fusion Mediterranean seafood restaurant at the pier.

Marina South Pier opened last year to replace the formerly functioning clifford pier. From here, you can take ferry rides to the Southern islands of Singapore such as kusu island and saint john’s island.

In the photo above (taken at low tide, such a shame!), the brightly lit ground floor is where people would buy their tickets and wait to board the ferry. Pier Eleven sits just above it! Notice the striking white wavelike structure on the rooftop? They have a bar up there too! More on that later.

Pier Eleven opened last December. When you first enter the restaurant, you would find yourself walking through a curtain of translucent black veil at the main entrance. It gives the place a very romantic feel. Pretty, pretty!

What I find rather odd though, is the seemingly random decor. Every single painting hanging on the walls looks to be of a completely different genre from the next. I know the restaurant also functions as a art gallery… But still! There are even a couple of trishaws that seem to look completely out of place. It’s a highly eclectic mix.

But small oddities like these can be set aside. Most people would prefer dining outdoor anyway, overlooking the shimmering sea! This brings to mind another place — Brotzeit at VivoCity. Waterfront dining sure is getting increasingly common these days! (about time too. We are, after all, surrounded by water!)

You can even opt to sit at (or lie down on) these daybeds!

We had soup for starters. The Mediterranean seafood soup, as indicated by the red round icon, is part of the health promotion board’s healthier dining program. This means that it would be cooked in a healthier way with less oil, salt and sugar. It didn’t taste particularly like a health dish (and I mean that in a good way), and fared much better than the crunchy mix mushroom cream soup.

I generally stay off red meat. But somehow, every guy I know loves his steak! (you do too, don’t you?) each time, I would get to try a little bit of it when someone orders.

I found this particular steak extra chewy and not too tender. It reminds me a little of the chewy steak sandwiches they give away free during happy hour at morton’s steakhouse. My friend remarked that it was a little raw towards the center (it was done medium rare) although overall, he still considered it pretty decent.

As for me, I had been hungering for lobster ever since having that excellent lobster thermidor at the Tanglin club. Out of the three lobster items on the menu, my pick was the baked lobster with a medley of seafood. And by “medley”, they mean mussels, prawns and scallops — two of each — with half a stick of burnt bread thrown in for good measure. It’s not a lot, but that’s what you get at a place like this.

The tomato fennel broth was slurpilicious! I found myself enjoying it very much. The lobster flesh was expectedly lacking in quantity because as far as lobster dishes go, that’s usually the case. The flesh didn’t separate easily from the shell too. But overall, I liked what I had.

As for dessert, no prizes for guessing what we had!

Chocolate lava cake! Haha! It is made from scratch and must be ordered 15 minutes in advance. Anyhow, it was marvelous and well worth the wait. ’nuff said. It made me a happy girl :)

Oh, and before I forget, the service here is friendly and excellent. The waiters are always around but never intrusive. Of course, it helped that there was only a handful of customers on a weekday evening. Yay!

Most of you faithful blog readers already know what my favorite dessert is. It’s either chocolate mousse or the dessert that I most frequently blog about — chocolate lava cake. After I had slammed délifrance for having some very questionable lava cake on their menu, a friend offered to take me someplace nice that serves a much better rendition of this dessert.

And boy, did he over-deliver! The “nice” place he had in mind? The prestigious members-only tanglin club!

Of the three restaurants at the club, we visited the tavern, a restaurant designed to resemble a traditional English tavern (hence the name). I love the signboard hanging outside the place. For some reason, it reminds me very much of the prancing pony inn (where Frodo first met aragorn) in the Lord of the Rings.

Obviously, the restaurant isn’t really an old tavern with a shabby look and a dingy setup. On the contrary, it feels charming and cosy with its vintage English decor, much like the rest of the clubhouse. After all, this is a British club that was founded more than a century ago, back in 1865!

My friend who’s a regular club visitor has already tried every item on the menu. He claims that everything there is good, and recommended the lobster thermidor.

Lobster Thermidor baked in the shell

Wow! When it comes to shellfish, most of the time you don’t really get to eat that much of its flesh. But in this case, there was really a whole lot of lobster flesh on my plate! I had never had so much lobster to myself before. It made me so happy :)

I could taste the naturally sweet seafood flavor of the lobster that was, fortunately, not masked by the rich pommery mustard sauce and cream sauce. The gruyere cheese melted atop the lobster gave it an extra nice finishing! If that’s not enough to fill the stomach, the lobster was also served with potato, gratin tomato and a stack of greens.

By the way, would someone please recommend a delicious and similar lobster dish elsewhere? I’m hungering for some lobster already!

Beef lasagna
SGD16.80

For something more filling, diners can always opt for the beef lasagna, which is good too. Every item on the menu is good, remember?

Apple pie a la Mode

Dessert time! That’s what we came for! The apple pie is an excellent choice, especially for those of you who love having some fruit in your dessert. The apple pie here is served a la mode, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Nice!

Sticky fondant chocolate lava

For me personally, I prefer desserts that aren’t fruity, and all the better if it’s chocolate! The chocolate lava cake here is served with cute peach balls and a scoop of ice cream. It’s my first time having this dessert with cookies and cream ice cream; most of the time, it would be vanilla. In any case, cookies and cream ice cream pairs perfectly with the chocolate fondant!

Another unusual thing about this particular lava cake is that instead of having hot molten chocolate oozing out of the cake, it is drizzled all over the cake. It works too. Everything I found on the plate was good, from the round hard biscuit to the white chocolate stick to the very moist and very chocolatey cake! Yum!

Over here, there is no service charge despite the topnotch service. In fact, the prices on the menu are extremely reasonable, perhaps a tad low even, considering the quality of food delivered. It seems that the club’s priority is to allow its members to enjoy the food and facilities rather than being out to make every penny possible. What a wonderful outlook!

A friend recently asked me, “since you dine out all the time, do you review every single eatery that you visit?”

The answer is no. There would simply be too many pictures to take and too many posts to write! The rule of thumb I follow to decide if the place is worth blogging about is that it must be either of the following:

nice place with good food, for e.g.: graze, aerin’s or Wild Rocket

cheap and good, for e.g.: Gu Zao Ren, rong guang BBQ seafood or riverside Indonesia BBQ

has an interesting and unique concept, for e.g.: lagnaa, Eclectic Attic or sho-u

so bad that I feel you guys must be warned! For e.g.: Mushroom Pot or mussel guys

And in my opinion, the chocolate lava cake at délifrance falls under the classification of being “so bad that I feel you guys must be warned”!

Fondant de Chocolat Chaud
SGD6.95++

First of all, chocolate lava cake or fondant is my most favorite dessert. (okay, it’s either this or chocolate mousse… I can’t decide!) it should be moist and chocolatey, with a thick and viscous chocolate lava at its core. Something like this one at bakerzin:

Now compare it with délifrance’s…

I mean, what the heck is that? It just looks all wrong! In fact, it even looks a little dirty to me.

I wouldn’t have minded the way it looked if it tasted good. But no, the chocolate cake was dry and crumbly, like stale cake! The chocolate lava was rather watered down and tasted a little funky.

Actually, it looked like one of those instant lava cakes that you can find at a supermarket. You know, the kind that you pop into the microwave oven and eat afterwards.

Argh! To think I had thought that I could enjoy my favorite dessert all the time since there’s a délifrance café AND a bistro délifrance right at my workplace! But now it looks like I’m gonna give it a miss — forever!

Let me just begin by saying that Wild Rocket is one awesome, awesome restaurant. My main purpose in going there is to try out the desserts, more specifically, the warm chocolate lava cake. Whether the main courses are any good is of secondary importance to me. But boy, do they impress!

Despite its rather remote location nestled at the top of Mount Emily, there is quite a crowd at this 40-seater restaurant on a Friday evening. That must say a lot about the quality of the food!

Wild Rocket is run by Chef Willin Low, who was previously — gasp! — a lawyer. He loved cooking so much he eventually stopped his practice to open the restaurant at Hangout Hotel, naming it after his favorite salad leaf (not the space missile!).

Even during the evening chow hours when the restaurant is brimming at full capacity (with mostly yuppies and stockbrokers), our orders arrive swiftly.

Crab meat linguini with chili tomato cream
SGD18.80+++

Off the pasta menu, I have chosen the crab meat linguini with chili tomato cream. It is perfect. Not just excellent, but perfect. The cheery bright orange speckled with green simply makes the dish so colorful and inviting!

It’s hard to find the right words to describe the unusual taste. Okay, intriguing, that’s the word! I have never really enjoyed cream-based pasta, but for the first time I am actually loving it! There is just so much flavor and spice in the chili tomato cream. I slurp down every last bit of the pasta which, by the way, is of an ample portion that would satisfy any full-grown man.

White Wine Sauce Atlantic cod linguini with lime zest

The other pasta we have ordered is the Atlantic cod linguini cooked in white wine sauce. It is quite spicy and has a very peculiar sourness due to the lime zest. Like the crab meat linguini, it has been cooked to al dente perfection. It sure looks like you can’t go wrong with pasta at Wild Rocket!

Finally, the desserts, the primary reason why Wild Rocket is in my list of “restaurants to check out” in the first place. I have a soft spot for warm chocolate lava cake. Just give me a mound of it and I’ll be as happy as a bouncy 3 year old!

Dark lava chocolate gateau with vanilla ice cream
SGD13+++

The dark lava chocolate gateau comes with two options. You can have it with either vanilla ice cream or flambé banana. Vanilla ice cream is the way to go (at least for me)!

Dark lava chocolate gateau with flambé banana

As for the flambé banana, which we have thought would have an actual flame somewhere, it’s basically just grilled banana. The thin cake layer holds the delectable warm chocolate lava that oozes out as you slice a fork through it. Wow, my entire mouth just filled with saliva!

A cup of black coffee would have gone perfectly with the chocolate cake, putting an end to a very cosy dining experience at Wild Rocket. Even with its slightly posh slant, the restaurant still exudes a sense of homeliness and comfort.

I rarely visit the same restaurant more than once unless it is really, really good. Wild Rocket definitely fits into this category. When it comes to food, service, decor and ambience, Wild Rocket has certainly gotten all of it right — a rarity.

The good things do not end here. Chef Willin has opened a bar next door by the name of Wild Oats. Judging by the standards of Wild Rocket, Wild Oats definitely looks promising! Is anyone intrigued yet?

Lately, I’ve been paying many visits to Bakerzin. The seafood pasta had me hooked from the very first bite and since then, I couldn’t help craving for it!

I have been encouraged to go for the desserts too, more specifically their bestselling warm chocolate cake. Mind you, this ain’t just any regular ol’ chocolate cake. This is the kind that takes the chef some time to serve because it has to be prepared and warmed up just precisely, with molten chocolate lava oozing out of its warm gooey nucleus.

I absolutely love what Bakerzin has done with it! In fact, I’ve had many different renditions of this decadent dessert at various places in recent months.

There’s white dog café’s chocolate lava cake:

All were pretty good, but Bakerzin’s warm chocolate cake takes the top spot!

It is served at just the right temperature (warm chocolate lava complements the cold vanilla ice cream), the perfect quantity (too much chocolate can get too rich, too little too unsatisfying), and with strawberries and syrup (so that the chocolate doesn’t get too cloying after a while).

I think Bakerzin has made the perfect warm chocolate cake. Does anyone have any other recommendation for this sinful dessert? I’m game to try it!

After seven days of eating waffles, barbecue and Mexican food in Dallas, I was having a serious craving for pasta. It didn’t matter where it was or how much it cost. Just as long as someone served me a big plate of good ol’ pasta, I would slurp it all down anyway.

My wish was granted at a hip little restaurant at VivoCity. It had a quirky name — white dog café! The choice of pasta? Fettucini aglio olio!

My first pasta in weeks turned out to be a huge disappointment. For a start it definitely didn’t look too appetising — a little dull even. At one glance I knew it wouldn’t go down too well. I was right.

I found the entire dish pedestrian, even though it had been recommended by the waiter. The fettucini was simply too chewy and the taste bland. I left most of it untouched and worked on the few prawns instead. The prawns were, thankfully, large and juicy, and just enough to satiate my hunger.

High Tea Set of Chocolate Lava Cake & Coffee

The high tea set offer looked rather tempting, especially with the chocolate lava cake beckoning to me from the glass cabinet. Warm chocolate cake oozing hot chocolate lava. It’s simply impossible to go wrong! There’s nothing like lounging out on a nice, sunny afternoon with chocolate cake and hot coffee!

I should spend some time talking about the atmosphere too. Even with the below-par pasta dish, I did like the whole breezy and casual ambience of the restaurant. Like many restaurants at VivoCity, white dog café is situated on one side of the mall that’s facing the sea. Diners can enjoy a good view of the sea through the full length windows, with Sentosa in the distance.

With the comfortable armchairs available, you can simply kick off your heels and relax over a nice afternoon tea. One drawback though, is that kay poh (nosy) Singaporeans walking along the deck would be constantly looking in to check out the food you’re eating!

I had dinner with my ex-boss allan recently. We checked out the olive ristorante hidden up high amongst the greenery at Labrador Park. Ironically, its secluded location serves as its biggest draw, which explains why the place was packed during the evening chow hours.

Of course, dining amidst nature meant that we received a few unwelcome six-legged visitors. But this unique restaurant still allows for a charming dining experience overall. There is dense foliage and greenery in place of walls, and cooling night breeze and powerful overhead fans in place of air-conditioning, with classical music playing at a low volume in the background.

Labrador Seafood Platter

The food served came in very petite portions. For our appetiser, we ordered the labrador seafood platter that consisted of smoked salmon, pan-fried scallops and prawns. The seafood was very fresh, although I did find the prawns to be a little on the bland side. All’s forgiven when I tried the smoked salmon that was rolled around a pouch of red caviar. It was ambrosiac. This is certainly a dish to die for.

Soup of the day was pumpkin soup which was nice and warm and rich with flavor. Very filling and very satisfying! Allan had the rack of lamb for his main course while I had my oven baked cod fillet

My small cod fillet was lost on its big plate. The portion was so skimpy I couldn’t really detect much flavor in it before I polished it off the plate. I didn’t exactly fancy the mushroom and potato on the side either.

On the other hand, the desserts were definitely worth a try. The peach fantasia in particular was very delightful and gave a nice sweet ending to the meal.

I say the same for the chocolate cake. It was a nice dessert that’s not too sweet. The warmness of the cake was nicely complemented by a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream. This dessert looks simple enough: a small square piece of cake on a plate, with ice cream on the side. But it’s totally yummy!

I really liked the seafood platter and the desserts, although the main courses still remain somewhat of a question mark. But with its excellent ambience and unique form, the olive ristorante is certainly a place that is worth checking out, for those on wheels of course.
Thank you, allan, for such a wonderful meal!

There are several reasons why I love tcc. Being a coffee lover, I am very particular about coffee. Among the more common café chains here, I find that tcc serves the best coffee. They have the largest coffee menu that would cater to the most diverse taste buds, including brews, coolers, lattes, frappuccinos, affagattos, and liqueur coffee that is served flambé. The Blue Mountain brew is my most favorite.

Besides coffee, tcc also has a wide range of food items to tantalise your taste buds. My Mom and I got to try two of their desserts recently.

Dark Devotion

First off, the dark devotion was heavenly. Topped with chocolate ice cream, it was served warm on the outside and cold on the inside. When I pierced the chocolate cake with a fork, warm chocolate lava came oozing out! It was everything a good chocolate dessert should be — rich, heavy, and absolutely satisfying.

The tiny dollops of berry compote at the side helped ensure that the richness of the chocolate didn’t get too cloying after a while. I left the sesame tuille alone though; it was too hard for my liking.

Chocolaty Meteor Delight
SGD9.50++

I have to admit I ordered the chocolatey meteor delight mostly due to its dreamy sounding name. Ever since I was a little girl, I have had this thing for stars and astronomy. Here, the strawberries and syrup streaks had been arranged prettily to resemble meteors. It was practically art on a plate!

Not only was the dessert pleasing to the eye, the milk chocolate mousse was smooth and creamy too. Thankfully it wasn’t too sweet at the same time.

Overall we were charmed by both desserts. They gave new meaning to the phrase “delicious sin”! I shudder to think of the calorie count though. Oh they also have this bunch of little booklets on every table. I took one home with me, thought it would make a nice mini coffee table book.

It is a tiny square booklet that looks rather fancy, with full color pages along with photographs, coffee facts and personality profiles. There is even a coffee astrology section! Here’s the profile of a leo coffee drinker:

Trendy Leo is the first to try and learn everything about popular espresso based drinks. Lions have espresso machines at home and are ferocious about perfecting their crema and frothing techniques. Tcc’s gourmet espresso selection like the Azuki Coffee and the Citrus Avalon are a definite hit with the Leos.

Interesting eh?

Other than the great coffee and awesome desserts, the service at tcc is also consistently excellent, a rarity in Singapore. When I visit a café I want to be able to sit down and relax over a cuppa joe. Helpful and well-mannered waitstaff certainly help. Over here, they treat every guest with courtesy and respect whether you’re spending 10 bucks or 100 bucks.

Every tcc café is also artfully designed and unique from one another, with nice ambience and soothing music. Personally I would prefer some place quiet like the branch at Great World City, where the crowd is smaller and makes for a more relaxed experience.
