This is served with pickles, quince compote and rustic bread. As a relatively unfamiliar food to the typical Singaporean’s palate, the acquired taste of cured meat may not be readily accepted by most. If the thought of raw ham puts you off, you may find it gamy and bizarre.

Charcuterie taster
S$48++

On the other hand, for those who appreciate this European delicacy, you’ll be thrilled upon seeing the grand presentation. The slow roasted suckling pig has an Iberico jamon and fig stuffing. Though not quite melt-in-your-mouth tender, the caramelised apples atop create a lovely texture in contrast to the minced meat stuffing. The crackling pork is crispy and addictive. I have been looking forward to this dish the whole night!

Squid ink pasta usually comes in two types: One where ready-made ink pasta is used, or the kind where the chef throws in the squid ink sauce while cooking. The latter is usually messy and invariably gives you blackened lips and teeth that make you resemble Tia Dalma from Pirates of the Caribbean. Thankfully, it is the cleaner version that is offered here.

Black pasta adds huge visual appeal to the dish for sure. The flavour of the black ink is subtle and very delicate. What better than generous chunks of red lobster to enhance its natural flavour. Dressed in a sweet tomato cream sauce, this is the best rendition of squid ink pasta I have ever had, and I will be raving about it for a long time!

Wagyu beer burger*
S$18++
Rating:

For something meatier, go for the Wagyu beer burger. Between two halves of the bun lie a sunny side up egg, a seasoned Wagyu beef patty, Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, crispy bacon. Served with greens, French fries and a dollop of coleslaw on the side, this sure makes a mighty nice feed. The one thing that is lacking is a chilli or ketchup dip to complement the fries.

(* Note: On request, the staff would portion out the dishes equally for sharing. Chinese seafood hawker stalls and restaurants are aplenty, but the western ones are rare. One reason may be the fact that the western counterparts are generally the pricier luxury-class type. Another may be that the western style of grilling seafood is deemed as not doing it justice. Lobster, anyone?

This place is one hidden gem. It is tucked within Maritime House, an aged pink building home to the Singapore Mariners’ Club. What many people wouldn’t know of is the wonderful restaurant that has been serving steaks and seafood ever since 1984!

There is certainly an old-school charm to this place. The interior is decked out like a ship, with wooden panels and naval-themed decor. The feel and ambience is a cross between the Manhattan Fish Market and Naked Fish Shoppe.

One attractive deal offered here is the $4.30 upgrade of a main course to a set meal. It gives you the additional:
- free flow of salad
- garlic bread
- soup of the day
- dessert
- coffee or tea

The best part of the deal has to be the free-flowing salad that allows you to have your fill from the salad bar. It shares a similar concept as Sizzler. Over here I have tried to create a healthful, colourful and delicious salad. I think I succeeded!

Buffalo wings
S$5++
Rating:

Done with the salad, garlic bread and soup, we start with the appetiser of buffalo wings. It’s basically six deep fried chicken wings and drumsticks accompanied by a sweet Thai chilli dip. The chicken has not been cooked thoroughly; the reddish blood is still very much visible when you get to the innermost part of the flesh. Ugh. It’s a disappointment because I want to love this restaurant, I really do.

Lobster (250 grams) & chicken fillet combo
S$22++
Rating:

Fortunately, the main courses are good! I order the lobster combo that comprises of a 250 gram lobster plus a choice of steak, chicken, fish or oxtail. For a chicken lover, the pan-seared chicken fillet is a natural choice.

Lobster has a reputation as a luxury food in the same class as foie gras and caviar. Instead of paying exorbitant prices at posh restaurants, you can indulge in it at a much fairer price range here. It is no less satisfying, too, with headily sweet flesh that is so tender, it slips out easily from the tail half at the slightest tug of the fork. I truly enjoy every precious morsel of my grilled shellfish.

As for the meat item included in the combo, chicken in my case, you can further pick your sauce from black pepper, mushroom or barbecue. I go for barbecue. It is a curious shade of orange-red that resembles sweet and sour sauce, and tastes like sweet and sour sauce. No complaints from me though. It is deee-licious.

This is one dish I would order again the next time I visit Mariners’ Corner. With both lobster and chicken, what’s not to love?

King prawn & chicken fillet combo
S$18++
Rating:

Another item that would appeal to the shellfish fans is the king prawn combo. It includes two king prawns, again with the choice of meat and sauce. This time round, you get to also select the way you want your prawns — thermidor or garlic butter. We go for the latter.

The prawn tastes pleasant, although lacking the same splendid sweetness as its bigger cousin. If I didn’t already have the lobster for comparison, I would easily award this dish 5 drumsticks.

For both combos, you get a huge slab of chicken fillet. As though all that shellfish and meat isn’t enough, the combo also includes vegetables and mashed potato. Excellent, excellent value!

By the end of the main course, we are too stuffed to swallow another ounce of food. It’s too bad, because we would love to have a second helping at the salad bar.

And we still have coffee and cake to go!

The downside is that when it gets busy, the service becomes excruciatingly slow and the waiters seem to be quite forgetful. For every course of our meal, we have to politely ask for our food because it never comes. Hopefully this is a one-off incident because other than that, we can find no fault with the restaurant. The captain, an elderly man in his 60s, is sincerely apologetic and he alone has made our meal that much more pleasant.

One particularly memorable scene is that at the neighbouring table, a group of people in their 20s are celebrating a friend’s birthday. Said captain brings out the cake, and sings the birthday song with unrivalled gusto! All the friends and the waiters are singing, but you can clearly hear that one particular guy is singing his heart out. Just imagine a 60 year old man singing Happy Birthday to a bunch of kids! He is obviously extremely dedicated to his work. Kudos.

Will I be back? Definitely. After all, I can never say no to shellfish.

Update on October 8, 2011: We came by here for my dad’s birthday celebration. As it turns out, the standards have dropped tremendously. The service is still fine, but the food is disappointing (not enough sauce; grilled lobster is dry and tough; fish is raw at the centre and we had to return it). We didn’t see the elderly captain this time round, and hear that the management has been changed. Sadly, this would probably be our last visit.

Mariners’ Corner Restaurant
Maritime House
120 Cantonment Road #01-02
Singapore 089760
Tel: +65 6220 6572
Service:

Bus services: 75, 167, 196
Nearest MRT: Outram Park / Tanjong Pagar

Opening hours: 11:30am – The tangy taste complements seafood very well.

The linguine pasta, on the other hand, was slightly undercooked instead of al dente. That’s my only gripe with this dish, albeit a major one. I had to leave some of the linguine untouched because I actually had trouble finishing it.

Nonetheless, props to them for the super prompt service and short waiting time though; all our food came within 15 minutes!

Calamari Fritti
S$9.90+
Rating:

Another seafood dish that we had was the calamari fritti, served in the form of long strips rather than the usual rings. The squid is tender and nice, while the beer batter is light and crisp. Along with the sides of garden salad and a tartar sauce dip, this dish makes a nice appetiser.

Rösti with Spicy Italian Sausage
S$16.90+
Rating:

When ordering a sausage dish, you can specify the type of sausage you prefer from the 8 choices available. We chose a pan grilled spicy Italian sausage with our rösti, served with home-made sour cream. The sausage was overtly salty and didn’t taste very good in our opinion.

To complement these European dishes, the restaurant sports a European theme for its decor. One side of the wall is decorated with murals of famous sights around Europe such as the eiffel tower and london bridge. On the opposite side of the wall are mounted flat-screen television panels playing music performances of andrea bocelli. This choice of music seems rather odd, but maybe that’s just me.

Besides a main area with regular dining tables and chairs, there is also a smaller and funkier dining area with round and bright red chairs. Very cute!

In fact, this is perfect for hanging out during teatime from 3 to 6pm. That’s when they have a $16.90 ice cream buffet with free flow of New Zealand natural premium ice cream (18 flavours), freshly baked waffle cubes and a cup of hot coffee or tea. Doesn’t that sound sinfully yummy? With the sweltering heat these days, this treat sure is sweet relief.

In any case, there are still a number of other new restaurants to check out. I probably wouldn’t be making a repeat visit anytime soon. Meanwhile, recommendations for a sumptuous and affordable lobster dish somewhere are always welcome!

Mingles La’ Brassarie
Playground @ Big Splash
902 East Coast Parkway
Blk B #01-11/12
Singapore 449874
Tel: +65 6346 3055
Service:

Bus services: 13, 16, 196
Nearest MRT: Eunos

Opening hours: 11am – On the contrary, it feels charming and cosy with its vintage English décor, much like the rest of the clubhouse. After all, this is a British club that was founded more than a century ago, back in 1865!

My friend who’s a regular club visitor has already tried every item on the menu. He claims that everything there is good, and recommended the lobster thermidor.

Lobster thermidor baked in the shell
S$37.50
Rating:

Wow! When it comes to shellfish, most of the time you don’t really get to eat that much of its flesh. But in this case, there was really a whole lot of lobster flesh on my plate! I had never had so much lobster to myself before. It made me so happy :)

I could taste the naturally sweet seafood flavour of the lobster that was, fortunately, not masked by the rich pommery mustard sauce and cream sauce. The gruyere cheese melted atop the lobster gave it an extra nice finishing! If that’s not enough to fill the stomach, the lobster was also served with potato, gratin tomato and a stack of greens.

By the way, would someone please recommend a delicious and similar lobster dish elsewhere? I’m hungering for some lobster already!

Beef lasagna
S$16.80

For something more filling, diners can always opt for the beef lasagna, which is good too. Every item on the menu is good, remember?

Apple pie a la Mode
S$5.90
Rating:

Dessert time! That’s what we came for! The apple pie is an excellent choice, especially for those of you who love having some fruit in your dessert. The apple pie here is served a la mode, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Nice!

Sticky fondant chocolate lava
S$8.50
Rating:

For me personally, I prefer desserts that aren’t fruity, and all the better if it’s chocolate! The chocolate lava cake here is served with cute peach balls and a scoop of ice cream. It’s my first time having this dessert with cookies and cream ice cream; most of the time, it would be vanilla. In any case, cookies and cream ice cream pairs perfectly with the chocolate fondant!

Another unusual thing about this particular lava cake is that instead of having hot molten chocolate oozing out of the cake, it is drizzled all over the cake. It works too. Everything I found on the plate was good, from the round hard biscuit to the white chocolate stick to the very moist and very chocolatey cake! Yum!

Over here, there is no service charge despite the top-notch service. In fact, the prices on the menu are extremely reasonable considering the quality of food delivered. It seems that the club’s priority is to allow its members to enjoy the food and facilities rather than being out to make every penny possible. What a wonderful outlook!

The Tavern
Tanglin Club
5 Stevens Road
Singapore 257814
Tel: +65 6739 4129 / +65 6739 4139 / +65 6739 4140 | Website
Service:

Members only

These posts may be related

Hippopotamus Restaurant Grill – You’ll Find Quality Meat Here
8,822

Wave House Sentosa – Making Waves in Singapore
2,332

OSO Ristorante – It’s, Oh, So Good
3,076

Mother’s Day 2011 – Restaurant Promotions & Deals in Singapore
10,191

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/tanglin-club-tavern/ | 14 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net
