To celebrate Christmas, each day we will feature one unique Christmas tree in Singapore.

With this series already into its 6th year, this Christmas we are collaborating with Flickr user Mr. Choo Yut Shing to bring you this showcase. I have been a huge fan of Mr. Choo’s photography in recent years; through his eyes you will start to see this city in a new light. It is an honour that he has graciously agreed to have his brilliant Christmas pieces featured on Sparklette.

Opening this year’s series is the classy Christmas tree erected at Paragon Shopping Centre. All the photos you see here are taken by Mr. Choo himself.

Credit

Unlike the conventional green and white Christmas trees, this tree deviates from the norm by being decked out in contrasting colours of black and gold, speckled with shiny baubles and large pointy stars. The mall’s facade is fronted by high-end international brands such as Gucci, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tod’s and Miu Miu.

To match these posh brand names, the Christmas decorations here maintain a classy and exceptionally beautiful standard year after year.

I like the bit of subtle coincidence in this shot. Can you tell what I am referring to?

This holiday season, Paragon shines with a decor that is best summed up by one colour: gold. An opulent Christmas tree standing at the swanky glass entrance becomes an eye-catching centrepiece. Adorning the tree, which has not a blade of leaf on it, are chains of gold balls with geometric patterns and shiny baubles in pearl white, gold and silver.

At night, the tree lights up in a series of outlines that form a grid pattern, lending a somewhat sci-fi feel.

Have Your Say!

Have you seen any gorgeous Christmas trees this festive season? Share with us in the comments!

For more Christmas trees, check out the Sparklette Christmas Tree of the Day series.

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/lifestyle/holiday/christmas-tree-4-2010/ | 4 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Bakerzin’s New Meal Boxes Let You Pay Less, Eat More!

Wine & Dine

bakery

café/bistro

City Hall

curry

dinner

Jurong Point

Jurong West

lunch

Mohamed Sultan

My Village

Ngee Ann City

Northpoint

Orchard

Paragon

Serangoon

Suntec City

Tampines

Tampines 1

Telok Blangah

Thomson

tiramisu

UE Square

United Square

VivoCity

western

Yishun

With nine branches spread across the island, Bakerzin has long been a crowd favourite for its desserts, cakes and artful dishes. Pitted against the surge of café-restaurants marketing the same fancy bites, how will Bakerzin’s newly revamped menu for 2010 fare?

A new addition to the menu is the interesting meal-boxes category. Each meal-box includes a main course or pasta, soup of the day, bread, side salad, slice of cake and a choice of Italian soda or iced tea.

We opt for three of the meal-boxes, namely the carbonara, Japanese chicken curry and Barramundi fish meal-boxes.

Carbonara meal-box
S$18.90++
Rating:

The creamy smell from the carbonara meal-box wafts into our nostrils long before it even arrives at the table. I’ve always been a fan of creamy pasta, so this is a natural choice for me. The presentation is elegant, the white of the plate contrasting well with the yellow in the pasta, speckled with pink and green.

However, the pasta turns out to be a little starchy and dry, as though it has been overcooked. Having had the same dish on a previous visit, this experience left me disappointed.

Japanese chicken curry meal-box
S$21.90++
Rating:

I like the way they make the Japanese chicken curry stand out with a pile of seaweed stacked atop the rice and the asymmetrical curry arrangement. This is the standard sweet and mildly spicy Japanese curry, although its pairing with the clearly western mashed potato seems mismatched.

Barramundi fish meal-box
S$26.90++
Rating:

The Barramundi fish meal-box is the one that captures our attention. The cooking is well executed, the fish perfectly paired with a savoury sauce. The salmon salad on the side is refreshing, while the mashed potato on which the fish sits is far more flavourful than the side dishes in the other two meal-boxes. This is one item that Bakerzin should definitely retain on their next menu update. (Editor: While we’re at it, please bring back the assam (tamarind) prawn linguini and the old seafood pasta, too!)

Soup of the day is the Spicy Bloody Mary soup, which is spicy and tomato-based. One minor gripe we have is that the angular shape of the deep soup bowls makes scooping difficult.

For the cake option, you have a choice between mango and tiramisu. The latter has just the right mix of cream, sponge and cocoa powder, with a soft texture that allows the fork to slide through easily. It suffices to say that the tiramisu does not disappoint.

While we’re on the subject of the new Bakerzin menu, I have always been impressed with the menu design and layout. The previous design had a style like a glossy magazine with oh-so drool-worthy pictures. The new menu sports a simpler old-school feel with the design and paper texture, while retaining the same gorgeous studio-quality images.

Peach Italian soda
Rating:

On the whole, the new meal-box concept serves as a more affordable option for enjoying a multi-course meal. That being said, it has its drawbacks. The small plates set on a tray reminds one of airline food. For that same reason I can’t help but eye my carbonara suspiciously, wondering if it was indeed prepared way beforehand and heated up on order. The next time I visit Bakerzin, I’d stick to the ala carte orders, thank you very much!

Have Your Say!

What are your thoughts on Bakerzin’s new meal-box concept? Tell us in the comments!

Bakerzin
- Jurong Point
- Northpoint
- Paragon
- Suntec City
- Takashimaya Food Hall (bakery)
- Tampines One
- UE Square
- United Square
- VivoCity
Website

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/bakerzin-meal-box/ | 6 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Christmas Dining 2010: Celebrate Christmas at COVA Pasticceria, Italian Style!

Holidays

Wine & Dine

bakery

café/bistro

cake

Christmas

European

Italian

Orchard

Paragon

Since its establishment in 1817, the COVA confectioneries and pastries have stood the test of time for more than 190 years. But these days, western cafés and bakeries also impress with their dazzling mooncake creations. COVA Pasticceria is one of them.

Established in Milan circa 1817, COVA arrived at our sunny shores in 2008, bringing along its coffee, pastry and chocolate specialties. This Mid-Autumn Festival, the open concept café at Paragon has brought back its popular Torta Della Luna (literally ‘cake of the moon’ in Italian) collection.

These Italian-style snowskin mooncakes are available in four flavours (below, clockwise from top centre):

- Peanut and chocolate
- Sweet potato and pumpkin (new in 2010)
- Rose and vanilla
- Mocha (new in 2010)

Torta Della Luna collection
S$38.50+ for a box of 4 (S$34+ each when you buy 3 boxes or more)
Rating:

All four mooncakes have a velvety snowskin with the same lovely patterns, topped with a slice of delicious milk chocolate. My favourite is no doubt the peanut and chocolate.

What is it about peanut and chocolate in the same sentence that spells awesomeness? The moment I saw this flavour I knew I was in trouble. This mooncake comprises chocolate sponge cake with a chocolate feuillentine (chocolate cream mixed with cereal) layer and a peanut butter cream layer. The addition of chopped peanuts gives a nice crunchy texture that literally makes me go nuts!

The newcomer mocha snowskin mooncake is made with COVA’s very own premium coffee and chocolate. As a coffee fanatic myself, I love, love, love this harmonious combination.

If you prefer strong flavours, you may find the new sweet potato and pumpkin mooncake a tad mild for your palate.

Another flavour that has returned this year is the pink rose and vanilla. Encased within the rose-scented snowskin is light vanilla sponge cake layered with chocolate and pastry cream. Only on special occasions, like when it’s someone’s birthday, would we enjoy the rare treat of dining at places like Fish & Co.

I remember there was once when a dozen of us crowded into the restaurant at Plaza Singapura. Shortly after sitting down to look at the menu, we had to make a rather embarrassing escape when we realised that we couldn’t afford the food! Yes, back then a Fish & Co meal seemed unattainable for us.

So, I think it’s great news that they are making their food extremely affordable now! From Sundays to Thursdays between now and October 31, they are reeling in customers with the fabulous Autumn Seafood Sensation promotion. Four seafood dishes are now priced at just $9 each!

Their fish and chips is rumoured to be the best in town. With this attractive promotion, it’s a great opportunity for everyone to put it to the test!

I did. So have they passed with flying colours?

Swiss fish & chips
S$9++
Rating:

The restaurant chain is famous for their seafood-in-a pan concept, where the dishes are served in little pans (though I’m pretty sure they don’t cook the food in them). Deep-fried to a lovely golden brown and topped with the signature garlic lemon butter sauce, the Swiss fish and chips certainly pass the initial looks test. The ample slab of dory fish helps a lot, too.

Still, none of that can prepare me for how awesome the batter is. It is one of the lightest, crispiest batter I have tasted, comparable to Japanese tempura! As for the flesh, it is tender, lightly salted and savoury throughout.

Look, it is even stuffed with Gruyere cheese!

This is, without a doubt, one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. (Hmm… I find that I have been using that phrase a lot lately.)

Another place that claims to have the best fish and chips is The Manhattan Fish Market. I haven’t had theirs before, but if it’s similar to the deep-fried fish fillet that they serve in their Flaming seafood platter, then it pales in comparison to Fish & Co’s.

Well, what do you think? Does Fish & Co have the best fish & chips?

Thai’s Deluxe Catch
S$9++
Rating:

One very flavourful dish included in the promotion is the Thai’s Deluxe Catch. It comprises of grilled dory fish, served with paella rice and a pile of fresh clams cooked in succulent tomato sauce.

The thing that “Thais” it together is the red curry ladled over the fish. The curry sauce is thick and sour, a very different rendition from your typical sweet Thai curry. I guess this is the tom yam edition. It goes well with the rice, and every bite is bursting with flavour!

With the promotion, both dishes cost just $9++!

Terms & Conditions:
- Promotion is not valid at the Paragon and Ion Orchard outlets.
- Seafood baked rice is not available at the Jurong Point outlet.
- Promotion is valid from Sundays to Thursdays excluding eve and day of public holidays.
- Promotion is valid for all day dine-in only.
- Promotion is not valid in conjunction with any other promotions, discounts, privileges, vouchers, and/or offers.

I really like the fact that the promotion is valid on Sundays, too. For your next meal, take advantage of these $9 Autumn Seafood Sensations! You can pick from:

Swiss fish & chips

Seafood baked rice

Captain’s Catch (barbecue sauce)

Thai’s Deluxe Catch (red curry sauce)

Aside from the food, I also notice that a copy of the restaurant’s newsletter is placed on every table. The quarterly publication contains the latest happenings and promotions at all the restaurants operated by the same company (that includes Giraffe Bar, too). This way, customers have something to read whilst waiting for their food. That’s a very cheap and clever marketing method! Since then, I have been wondering if we can enjoy the same thing in Singapore.

With some googling, I struck gold. Grandma’s at Orchard Parade Hotel serve the same dishes whipped up by Chef Yong, a former chef at Madam Kwan’s for 8 long years! The restaurant also falls under the Akashi group, and is one that I would eventually visit and come to love.

Because I didn’t get to try Madam Kwan’s famous nasi bukhari in Kuala Lumpur, I’ve grown even more curious about it. That’s the first dish I go for, and Grandma’s certainly does not disappoint.

Nasi Bukhari (pilaf rice)
S$15.80++
Rating:

The nasi bukhari consists of (clockwise from top left):

beef rendang

rice cooked in coconut milk

assam prawns

a mega-huge chicken drumlet

The most impressive part of this dish is, no doubt, the big chicken. It has the thinnest, crispiest skin, and neither feels dry nor oily. You just want to chew up all the skin at one go!

Soaked in gravy and infused with the fragrance of spices, the beef rendang is soft and tender.

The weak link of the dish, I find, is the assam prawns that are cooked with loads of sauteed onion. The portion is skimpy (just two prawns of average size) and the taste is ordinary (bakerzin’s assam prawns with linguini is actually better).

Nasi Lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk)
S$10.80++
Rating:

If you can bring yourself to spend more than $10 on nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk), go for this.

The nasi lemak consists of (clockwise from top left):

sambal ikan bilis (dried anchovies)

cucumber

achar (pickled vegetables) in a separate small dish

curry chicken

rice cooked in coconut milk

hard boiled egg

dried shrimp floss

So basically, the accompaniments are identical to Madam Kwan’s.

The lemak rice is similarly aromatic and fluffy. Perhaps due to my own (high) expectations after having tasted madam kwan’s nasi lemak, I find that I’m not a big fan of the sambal and achar here. And for me, the sambal plays the most important role of this dish.

But where madam kwan’s falters, Grandma’s does a pretty good job. The curry chicken here is tastier and goes wonderfully with the fragrant rice.

Now that I have tried the nasi lemak at both restaurants, I feel I can fairly say that overall, Grandma’s nasi lemak pales slightly in comparison. (I feel horrible for saying that!) however my partner who has never eaten at madam kwan’s before loves it, so I think it has a lot to do with expectations; once you’ve had the best, nothing else seems good enough. Madam kwan’s shoes are hard to fill.

Sotong (calamari)
S$7.80++
Rating:

Apart from the two main dishes, Grandma’s also has a whole range of dishes that you can order, zi char style.

The sotong (calamari) is stir fried in either soya sauce or spicy tamarind sauce. We pick the first, which is an excellent choice. The dark soya sauce gravy is distinctly different from all the dishes we have ordered, with a refreshing sweetness coupled with a mild tinge of spiciness.

The sotong, in this case, is sliced into bigger chunks as opposed to the more common rings. The flesh is a little stiff, and would have been a perfect 5 had it been softer.

Otak Otak (spicy fish paste)
S$8.80++
Rating:

Another dish I would recommend is the otak otak (spicy fish paste). While it may seem quite pricey, you do get a fat slab of fish paste on the platter. More importantly, it is juicy and oh-so-satisfying, with the spiciness level turned up a notch compared to the earlier dishes.

You can also see that the otak contains many chunky pieces of fish and isn’t all mush. Take that, you restaurateurs that refuse to serve free water. That’s how it’s done.

Of course, if you want something other than water, you can take advantage of the cheap beer. $3 pints of tiger or $5 pints of Erdinger, anyone?

I have attached Grandma’s menu here. It is worth noting that the service here is prompt and friendly. Both the manager and assistant manager are busting their asses along with the waitstaff, and still find time to chat with us and ask about the food.

From our conversation, I learn that Chef Yong is stationed at Orchard Parade Hotel. He’s the guy that prepares all the gravies and sauces (that is, the stuff that make or break a dish), which are then delivered to the other outlets. This way, the consistency of the food standards is maintained at both places!

Maybe it’s something to do with the restaurant’s name, I spot many families in the weekend dinner crowd. This is certainly one restaurant where you can bring your parents and in-laws to.

Well done, Grandma’s. I’m delighted to discover a new restaurant that I can frequent. But the thing that really catches the eye are the life-sized dancing ladies on giant baubles decked out in the same colours. It reminds me of the life-sized angels at Bugis Junction two years ago.

Dance, dance, dance away with these golden girls! But seriously, after the Starry-Eyed Surprise they gave us before, it would be mega-difficult for them to outdo themselves this time.

They have done a beautiful job though — their tree this year looks splendid, but I still very much prefer the one from last year.

One thing that has remained is the classiness of the decor, befitting a high-end mall like this. Gone are the pointy stars that I oh-so-love. In their place are strings after strings of large shiny pearls, a pretty ornament that is rarely seen on Christmas trees. They have certainly managed to make it work.

This tree looks beautiful, whether it’s in the day or at night. A whimsical Christmas, anyone? I really love the sound of that!

Here’s a cute shot of the tree as seen from the stone sculptures just outside the mall.

The 8-pointed star at the top of the tree is almost invisible in the day. But when night falls, its illuminated outline can be seen clearly.

And for now, a testament that Singapore is a land of beautiful Christmas trees:

The Paragon tree is seen across the busy road in the background with the gold Braun Büffel tree from yesterday in the foreground. Boy, are we lucky to have so many beautiful Christmas trees in such close proximity. Do they have this in other countries too?

While in many cases it is rather obvious that the same tree is used each year (such as this and the 4-storey tree at Takashimaya), we really can’t expect malls to get a brand new super-sized tree every Christmas. Usually, the creative use of new ornaments would suffice to give the same old tree a completely different look.

But this no longer applies when you have a tree that is bright pink, like The Cathay’s. When they set up their candy pink tree last year, it was a picture-perfect sight that reaped heaps of praise from all around. When they set up the same tree again this year, suddenly we aren’t seeing any new pictures of it on flickr.

Speaking of trees with unconventional colours, I’m still waiting for a purple one! Oh wait, they already did it in China. Bakerzin owner and chef Daniel Tay was taught by his Dad on how to prepare the delicious assam prawns.

For those with a weakness for spicy food, you would totally love this. I tell ya, these juicy prawns go so well with the thick and sweet spicy gravy, they’re practically exploding with flavour. It’s mouthwatering and lip-smackingly good!

Just when I thought they can’t possibly do any better than their 5-star seafood pasta, they whip up this new pasta that totally surpasses my expectations! Like the seafood pasta, a generous serving of prawns is tossed in too.

Besides the east-meets-west fusion of assam prawns with linguini, you can also choose to have it with Japanese rice. I might ask for spaghetti next time though; I feel spaghetti might just go better than linguini.

Update: I tried this with spaghetti a few days later and guess what? I did like it better than the linguini!

Oh, for the seafood pasta die-hard fans, this old favourite is still on the new menu. They wouldn’t dare take it away would they? While it was tasty, we did find it too dry for our liking. I sure hope it isn’t always dry like that, especially since this place doesn’t serve water. That’s my only pet peeve with Bakerzin. (a rather major one though.)

But who needs aglio olio when you already have two awesome tried-and-tasted pasta dishes right? Mind you, this ain’t just any regular ol’ chocolate cake. Does anyone have any other recommendation for this sinful dessert? I’m game to try it!

Bakerzin
All outlets
Website

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/bakerzin-chocolate/ | 26 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Christmas Tree of the Day #12 (2006 Edition)

Holidays

Christmas tree

Paragon

If I could, I would name this tree Starry-Eyed Surprise.
