Ever since I tried Allerines Tea for the first time, I have fallen in love with it. That’s quite a big deal coming from a coffee lover! I don’t drink tea everyday, but when I do, I always look forward to each tea session with my mom. You can think of it as our little mother and daughter bonding time. Allerines teas, with their wonderful aromas, certainly sweeten this time we spend together.

Snowy the Ragdoll cat makes a cameo appearance again!

As for the special pink and purple Valentine’s packaging, it’s just gorgeous. Each Valentine’s gift box contains 5 tea bags. Our cat decides he wants to be a part of the photo taking too and waltzes right in front of the camera!

Like all Allerines teas, the tea bags are translucent and pyramid-shaped. The unusual shape allows the tea leaves enough room to expand thus freeing their delicious flavour.

The flavour that Allerines has included is Vanilla Caramel Dream. If you love the sweet taste of caramel, this tea is perfect with a hint of vanilla and cornflowers.

My favourite tea so far is Sakura, which you can read about in my earlier experience with Allerines Tea. I’m just in love with the sweet floral aroma.

Even though Valentine’s Day may be over, you can definitely still grab your favourite tea at Allerines. This online store offers dozens of blended teas in different varieties, all ready to be delivered to your doorstep any time! After all, there’s always a time to drink good quality tea and escape to your relaxed private zone.

VJO Teahouse is located within a five-minute walk of The Riverside Bar & Restaurant. I would give you proper directions, but you probably won’t need that when the building stands out like a beacon.

Whilst doing research on my Lenovo laptop for places to go in Chiang Mai, I learn that this is one of those eateries that locals would bring their foreigner friends. After all, it’s not everyday that you get to hang out in an all-pink tea house, is it?

Upon entering the building, you pass through the shopping section that sells tea blends, teapots and other accessories that are beautifully wrapped in specially designed paper bags and tins.

Then, you arrive at the spacious dining area and finally see what everyone has been raving about. This place looks like a dream!

Under a fuchsia canopy, the lounge area is attractively decked out in floral décor and water features on the dark wood floor. Obviously much attention to detail has been paid to the interior design.

Soothing English songs play in the background as you settle into the cushioned seats of varying hues of pink. A well-stocked magazine rack is available for your reading pleasure. For those of you with your wireless devices, there is free wi-fi, too.

The breezy outdoor area with umbrellas overlooks Ping River.

We pick a cosy spot and go about our orders. Even the menus featuring the cursive logo are pretty.

VJO high tea for two

The VJO high tea for two is presented in a three-layered cake stand filled with cakes, sandwiches and fruits. All the pastries here are made in-house.

For the cakes, you get a range of petit fours that taste as good as they look.

The mini sandwiches come in two varieties — cucumber and some form of egg custard. Notice the cute little beaded picks that are stuck in each one.

As for fruits, they arrive as a colourful salad of dragonfruit, green apple, pineapple and strawberry.

Rose tea
Rating:

To wash down the delicious treats, the high tea set includes a large pot of tea, for which we choose the rose tea.

How very quaint, and so very girly! We see mostly locals, a few tourists, and even an all-male group at one point. The tea, desserts, soothing music and laid-back garden setting all make for an incredible way to chill out. By the time we have to leave the place reluctantly, it feels as though we have enjoyed a lengthy spa treatment!

At Eden Sanctuary Floral Cafe in China Square Central, meals can be personalised based on individual preferences and customised according to dietary requirements. In the 5-course meal, Chef Clement Ronald Ng painstakingly puts together each dish according to colour, and ensures that you literally taste a rainbow!

Floral tea

This being a floral café, it is fitting that we start with some floral tea.

Served in glass pots and delicate cups, the teas come in almost every colour imaginable. Don’t these look like magic potions?

Relax fusion tea

The fusion teas are made with various herbs and flowers. The Relax tea, for example, is a pretty in pink concoction that comprises rose, rose hip and lemon verbena.

Butterfly blue pea

With its dramatic shade of purple-blue, the butterfly blue pea certainly makes an impression. The colour is totally natural, courtesy of the butterfly pea flowers.

With practically hundreds of possible tea combinations, you can definitely find one that suits your mood!

And now, let’s begin our gastronomic journey of colours!

Eden Rainbow salad

The Eden Rainbow salad arrives first, so named for its composition of 6 colours – red, orange, green, white, blue and brown. It consists of orange slices, blueberries, mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and multi-grain bread, tossed in a dressing made from calamansi, apple cider vinegar and honey. The whole sweet combination is well put together, and I finish all of it in no time. Love the delightful dressing!

White

Dory Portobello mushroom with lemon thyme butter sauce
Rating:

For this course, a cut of dory is served atop Portobello mushroom along with some mixed vegetables. The lemon zest and salted butter sauce is light and flavourful, but my favourite part of this dish is the mushroom that oozes delicious juices with each bite.

Prawns with Edamame peas pasta
Rating:

The prawns with Edamame peas pasta is “green” due to the peas, asparagus and celery. And how are these green? Why, the chlorophyll of course! (Glad to know that those elementary science lessons haven’t failed me after all these years!) While the generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese lends some flavour, the pasta is a tad dry for me.

Blue and Purple

Balsamic Ambrosia blueberry chicken
Rating:

My personal favourite dish is the balsamic Ambrosia blueberry chicken. The boneless chicken cut is tender and moist, marinated over 24 hours in balsamic vinegar and a certain Chilean wine.

The Rucahue Ambrosia late harvest wine comes in a striking blue bottle. It smells fresh and crisp. Next time I’m gonna have a taste of it!

Yellow and Orange

- Help reduce the risk of some cancers
- Contains antioxidants
- Boost immune system

Sauteed mushroom with Polenta and saffron cream sauce
Rating:

The cornmeal Polenta with White Button mushroom slices, cherry tomato, saffron cream sauce and feta cheese brings the yellow to the table. As healthy as it sounds, I am not a fan of the texture of the Polenta. By this course, you would likely feel full, but without that unwelcome stuffed sensation.

Red and Brown

Brown
- Promote artery and heart health
- Help reduce the risk of diabetes
- Help reduce high blood pressure
- Offer antioxidants for healing and protection
- Help reduce the risk of stroke
- Help reduce the risk of certain cancers of the breast, prostate and colon

Modena mousse cake, chocolate ganache and hibiscus cheese filo
Rating:

Ahh… desserts to curb your sweet tooth cravings! This is a trio of Modena mousse cake, chocolate ganache and hibiscus cheese filo.

The Modena mousse cake is sweet and sour. You probably won’t believe it, but amongst its many ingredients are balsamic vinegar and black pepper!

It is impossible not to love the chocolate ganache, which is a mould of dense chocolaty goodness!

- Improve memory function
- Help reduce the risk of certain cancers

As for the hibiscus cheese filo (or phyllo), it is made with hibiscus (the national flower of Malaysia) and light cream cheese. The result is a beautiful pastry with a crispy skin, pink cheese layers and sweet fruity undertones. This is my favourite of the trio.

The 5-course meal is available at S$55 a person.

I am referring to The Cookie Museum, of course. This place was formerly known as The V Tea Room, where V probably stood for Victorian. Each time I walk past this tea lounge at the Esplanade, I can’t help but slow down for a better look. The quaint Victorian theme is so beautiful it really takes your breath away! Throw in the motif wallpaper, gold-rimmed mirrors and largely pink decor, this is one place that is perfect for an afternoon tea session with the girlfriends.

Another place that boasts similarly gorgeous decor is Tea Cosy by Eclectic Attic.

Here, you sit on plush chairs with ornate carvings and feel like royalty.

Obviously, the namesake cookies are a huge draw. Have you ever come across unconventional flavours like Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, masala and tom yam crab?

Laksa cookies

We sample the Laksa-flavoured cookies, and my, they taste just like the real thing! This is the first time we have tried cookies that are actually spicy. It may seem a little weird at first, but I can get used to the taste.

Has anyone attempted baking these unique Singapore-flavoured cookies? Would adding coconut milk, shrimp paste and a dash of sambal chilli conjure up Laksa-flavoured cookies? If you have done this, please share your recipe with us!

Aside from the cookies, there is a large menu just for the tea alone. The staff would roll the tea cart right to your table and delicately serve the teapot, sugar, etc.

You can see how the tea is being served here. It’s a rather long process so the video cuts off before the tea has been poured! But you get the picture.

I just love, love, LOVE that dainty floral teacup! I wonder where we can buy something similar for our homes?

Darjeeling Margaret’s Hope

In the past, they would refill the teapot with hot water, so you could practically drink the tea forever! But nowadays they have stopped doing it. Each teapot fills about 2 cups of tea.

The moment you walk into the tea lounge you are greeted by the sight of the dessert station. And what a fabulous spread! In place of the usual macarons and bite-sized sandwiches, you get a whole new array of Christmas goodies!

Weekend Afternoon Tea Buffet (Christmas edition)

The first thing that catches the eyes are these tiramisu desserts in shot glasses. They have little gingerbread man biscuits (and they were SMILING!) that would totally win your heart!

Once we have settled down comfortably into our plush seats at a low coffee table, the waitress hands us the drinks menu. There are different types of tea (Earl Grey, English Breakfast, etc) and coffee (regular, mocha, cappuccino, etc). These are all part of the buffet unless you’re going for pricier stuff like the Blue Mountain coffee.

The tea and coffee are served with an elaborate spread of gold-tinged porcelain ware and silverware. There’s both white and brown sugar (in perfect semi-spherical shapes), milk, lemon and a little tub of honey.

At one end of the buffet line is the dessert station while at the other you’ll find the appetisers and finger food. We start from the appetisers before slowly working our way to the desserts. Gotta save the best for last, right?

The appetisers come in neat petite sizes, so there’s room in the tummy to sample everything!

The seared scallop is extremely satisfying, with a full-sized scallop topped with salmon caviar.

You would also find offerings that range from the more ostentatious foie gras mousse…

… to the more down-to-earth roast duck.

Dining here is certainly a feast for the eyes. Even something like roast duck can look so visually appealing!

There are also the bread items, all in miniature sizes. Go easy on these, because they can really fill you up quickly.

Cute mini burgers!

Even something as basic as toothpicks look great with that colourful weaving!

The deep-fried crab claws and roasted prawns come with their own individual spicy dips which are delicious and go very well with the food.

Even though the appetisers are good, my mind is really on the desserts!

If you find the usual chocolate log cake to be too rich or sore throat-inducing, there are various fruity alternatives such as the raspberry log cake. It looks pretty grand!

This baby pink log cake not only looks gorgeous, it tastes divine too! There’s lychee in it, and the layer of strawberry cream is actually mousse! If you can’t get enough of it at the buffet, you can also buy the whole cake home for $55.

Chocolates! No Christmas should go without them. And these are the richest!

A star-shaped cookie for Santa? I love the Christmasy touch given to the cupcake in the form of a gold snowflake white chocolate crisp. The icing is extremely sugary and diabetes-inducing though.

Strawberry dessert shots for the girls. How pretty!

There’s also a chocolate fondue fountain somewhere in the room but I really don’t have room in my bellyful of goodies for more.

During the buffet, a waiter would move from table to table to make vodka shots for diners. Our lychee vodka comes in coloured glasses. Clink!

Despite being in a 5 (or is it 6) star hotel, the mood is comfortable and relaxed. To further enhance the festive atmosphere, a live jazz band plays Christmas songs in the background. With the music, the quaint little delights and the soothing ambience, it sure is a great way to chill out on a weekend afternoon.

As always, there’s more than meets the eye! Tea Cosy holds many precious European antiques and collectibles. A walk through the store takes you back to the dreamy Victorian ages. If you need a cup of tea to complement your experience, you may do so at the in-store bistro, tea cosy.

At tea cosy, diners sit at antique tables and eat off vintage Royal Copenhagen plates. Quite an experience indeed! You need to be extra careful though. The store policy states that broken utensils must be paid for. After all, these are all vintage stuff. Just look at that beautiful porcelain plate. With the exquisite rose painting and gold trimming, it’s easily the prettiest plate I have ever seen! Gorgeous!

Minty Chocolate Coffee

High tea is served in the traditional English style. Bite-sized cakes of different flavours are served alongside tea or coffee. Being a coffee person, I went for a minty chocolate coffee. I don’t really fancy the minty taste but there’s always room for trying out something new. Gotta say that I still love my coffee the way it is, without any extra flavouring unless it’s chocolate!

Strawberry Mousse Cake, Chocolate Brownie & Chocolate Marble Cake

The cake sampler set comes in different quantities, with a choice from seven different flavours. Chocolate is a definite safe bet. My chocolate brownie and chocolate marble cake were delicious. The good thing about the sampler set was that I didn’t even have to feel too guilty eating due to the bite-sized quantities! I didn’t really fancy the strawberry mousse cake though. Felix, the manager even took extra care to warm up the cakes before serving. It was a nice touch.

Besides high tea, Tea Cosy also serves lunch and dinner. Foie gras is the house speciality. I wouldn’t say that the food and drinks are the main draw of Tea Cosy. It is the vintage treasures and all things pretty that makes this a very unique and cosy experience.

I liked the place and was impressed with the fancy porcelain tableware they used. Everything, from the teacups and saucers, and the bowls and plates, right down to the sugar and creamer holders, were from the Royal Copenhagen blue flower series.

The house specialty tea came in teacups that had been painted with the year they were issued. One had the year 2002 painted on its bottom while the other was painted the year 1987. More amazingly, there were cups issued as early as the 19th century!

I was even more impressed with the food. It was practically art on a plate!

The main course I ordered was called “shooting star”. It consisted of two slabs of dory fillet — one fried and one steamed — served with shrimp and toast. Everything about it tasted good and really filled my stomach. I have to admit I ordered the dish mainly because of its attractive name, but the food turned out great!

My friend ordered a foie gras salad. I didn’t try it because I didn’t have the appetite for duck liver, but the dish looked good!

The sirloin steak looked awesome, but too bad I’m not a steak person! Wow, it seems like I’m missing out on a lot of good food because the only meat I eat is chicken and seafood. But you guys don’t have to miss out, do you?

The total bill came up to over 80 dollars, which is a decent price to pay for a good meal for two. Overall, the place kinda reminded me a little of The Cookie Museum with the good food and European theme. The service we received was not too friendly though, as the middle-aged waitresses seemed quite distant and perhaps even a little snobbish at times.

A pretty tea boutique opened recently at the Esplanade, known as the V Tea Room. Boasting a Victorian theme in a cozy setting, everything about the V Tea Room looks beautiful! There is so much detail in its decor. Thick volumes of Victorian books decorate the counter. Masquerade masks hang on the walls. Dainty little cups are used to serve tea. Even the menus are very exquisitely designed!

I am most impressed with how beautiful the menu looks. First of all, it’s large. Every menu has its own unique cover with gold pop-up patterns. I have never seen a better-looking menu! At first glance, they don’t even look like menus, but more like the covers of thick, valuable antique books.

True to its name, the V Tea Room has a large selection of tea. I’m no tea connoisseur as I am more of a coffee fanatic, but the queen’s tea we had was good. And the best thing? With the tea leaves in the pot, we could simply keep refilling it with hot water. In the words of my friend, we could practically drink the tea forever!

They had a large variety of teacakes too, including ones filled with liqueur. My belly was still full from an earlier meal so I couldn’t really eat much. But I would be sure to visit the V Tea Room again for its affordable tea and cakes, beautiful decor and excellent service.
