A few times each week I would hit the beach for a sunbathing session. I even had that special islander pass that bestows upon its holder the power of unlimited queue-free access to the island.

So while my course mates were dozing off in the air-conditioned lecture theatres, I was dozing off on a mat under the sun. Eventually I grew darker and less recognisable by my own friends and kin. My tanning regime had to end.

These days, my visits to Sentosa are limited to annual events like Sentosa Flowers and the occasional drink at the beach bars. But after a sumptuous brunch at Club Islander this past weekend, I reckon I would be going there a lot more.

The sun, the sand, the sea… And brunch! What a way to unwind — Hawaiian style! You like?

Coffee (free-flowing)
S$2.50++
Rating:

Brunch has just been introduced to the Palawan Beach Bar on weekends from 10:30am to 2:30pm. You can check out the brunch menu before heading down for an idyllic weekend. As with the other Sentosa F&B outlets, the menu is the creation of executive chef, Kenny Yeo.

Club islander directly opens out to the beach. The sea is literally just footsteps away! In fact, many people would simply laze on the sand while the waitstaff serve them their favourite food and drinks.

If you don’t like the feel of sand between your toes (wait, why are you at the beach again?), the sheltered boardwalk also provides ample seating. I think the shelter would be retracted at night, so people can have a romantic dinner under the stars! Wow-weee!

I tried to photoshop away that man in the photo but it’s too much work. He does illustrate a good point though; you can swim in the sea and then walk right up to the bar, dripping wet and all, wearing nothing more than your swimming trunks or speedos. No one would toss you a second glance. Unless you’re a hot bikini babe, that is.

Okay, enough about that. Let’s talk about the food!

Eggs Benedict on toasted English muffin
S$12.50++
Rating:

When it comes to brunch, the Eggs Benedict always has to make an appearance. So popular it is, McDonald’s decided to create a “poor man’s” version of it, substituting the hollandaise sauce with a slice of cheese. Do you know what it is?

Why, the McMuffin, of course!

Anyways, the Eggs Benedict here is done with a little twist. Instead of the usual ham, the poached eggs come with chicken patty. Perfect with the dollop of hollandaise sauce and the toasted English muffin!

And that is just one way of having your eggs done.

Sunnyside up on prawn bolognaise served in a toast box
S$17.90++
Rating:

Sunny side up works for me too. The result? A super light, crispy, golden brown exterior that contrasts wonderfully with the soft interior of the toast. In these stressful times, it’s more important than ever that we are mindful of what we eat. But just mention health food and the mind automatically conjures up images of bland, flavourless dishes that are more vegetable than anything else. Hardly appetising!

Personally, I don’t believe in eating something just to reap the health benefits — it should actually taste good! Here’s where restaurants like The Organic Café Xperience come in. Not only are the dishes healthful and organic, they’re super yummy too!

My favourite is the waffles with smoked salmon! What an intriguing combination!

Waffle smoked salmon marinated with organic honey
S$13.90++
Rating:

First of all, I love waffles! Hence by default, any dish with waffles would score high points with me. In this case, the waffles are done perfectly — warm, crispy, marinated and coated in organic honey. Yum yum!

Smoked salmon, fresh organic lettuce and tomato form the layers between the waffle slices. The salty smoked salmon is used cleverly to balance with the sweetness of the honey, resulting in a completely new sensation. I didn’t think that this seemingly odd coupling would work so well together, but it did.

Served along with the waffles are a heap of French fries and a bowl of salad. That just about completes the meal!

Beef Fettuccine
S$13.90++
Rating:

For those of you who are hungering for something more filling, a range of pastas is available. Our beef fettuccine came with sliced beef, Shitake mushroom and chilli padi in it. Hot! Taste-wise, it was nothing spectacular. But you can have your pick from the many other dishes on the extensive menu.

Just to be clear though, the fruits and vegetables are organic, the fish and meat aren’t. This is because organic meat costs way more than regular meat and the dishes would end up being much pricier.

In any case, I can have the peace of mind knowing that the vegetables I’m eating are not laced in a cocktail of chemicals! I felt so healthy after the meal! It even kinda alleviated my guilt from eating the Kentucky fried chicken the day before.

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/organic-cafe-xperience/ | 10 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Shokudo Japanese Food Bazaar – There’s Something for Everyone [Closed]

Wine & Dine

casual

City Hall

dinner

Japanese

lunch

marketplace dining

Raffles City

restaurant

waffle

If you are a fan of Marché, the Swiss-run restaurant at VivoCity, or even its imitator at The Heeren, chances are you would love Shokudo Japanese Food Bazaar. Shokudo shares the similar concept of having several cooking stations under one roof, charge cards and themed dining, but with Japanese cuisine instead.

The 15,000 square foot eatery opened just weeks ago at the new basement extension of Raffles City Shopping Centre. Attracted by the fact that I can choose from over 230 dishes, I hurried down to check out the place. Many other people had the same idea, and it was only during my second visit that I managed to get in after a relatively short queue.

The design is colourful, modern and tasteful, with various areas of themed dining. The walls are dominated by murals of Tokyo city scenes overlaid with graphics of Japanese girls.

(Update: Asprah left a comment informing me that those aren’t really Japanese girls, but long-haired Japanese male rockers!)

(As I was rather enthralled by the art on those walls, I did some snooping around and found the artist’s website where you can see all the commissioned arts he did for Shokudo. here’s the link.)

There are even a few colourful neoprint machines at the centre of the restaurant! They sure are a hit with the younger crowd.

You would find the rosti here too, which is a signature potato dish at Marché. But other than that, the food is vastly different. In addition to traditional fare such as sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki and tempura, there are many more unusual creations.

Even for Western dishes such as burgers and pasta, they would be done Japanese style. The burgers come with eggs served sunny side up and — check this out — miso-flavoured beef patties!

So there I was, walking through the melange of various cooking stations, not knowing what to eat. There were so many choices and everything looked tempting to me!

Then, I spotted a queue at the omelette station. Normally, bland-tasting omelettes wouldn’t attract me much. But this time round, my Singaporean mentality kicked in. “if there’s a queue, it must be good la!” moreover, it was fun watching the chef cook the omelette in his cute square-shaped pan.

The dish is served popiah-style, with the omelette wrapped around the ingredients and cut into different segments. Delicious mayonnaise is then drizzled generously over it.

Japanese-style Unagi (Eel) Omelette
S$5.80++
Rating:

What you see here is the unagi (eel) omelette. I swear I am not exaggerating here, but boy, it was lip-smackingly good! I certainly had not expected it to be that good. I mean, there is only so much you can do with an omelette right? It was a little sweet, a little salty, and bursting with flavour all at the same time. I strongly urge everyone to go for this — we even got ourselves a second helping!

Besides unagi, you also get to choose from other ingredients such as crab meat, cheese, bacon, ham, sliced pork and mushroom too. Wow, I’m so going back to shokudo just to get a taste of the omelette again!

Japanese BBQ Eel Hot Plate
S$6.80++
Rating:

If you are in the mood for something more conventional, go for the Japanese hot plate. Besides the unagi seen above, there’s also beef, seafood or chicken (for the chicken lovers like me) to choose from. It’s nothing particularly out of the norm, but tastes good nonetheless.

Bean Sprouts
S$4++
Rating:

Okay, this is just too funny to leave out. For something that goes back to the basics, and by that I really do mean the basics, there’s the fried tau gay (bean sprouts). I couldn’t believe it when my friend came walking back to our table with a whole platter of fried tau gay! And it actually cost 4 bucks!

This is followed by dessert! Dessert choices include crpes, waffles and even tofu cheesecakes. Always a fan of waffles, we went for the waffle with a scoop of gelato. Why gelato? Because the Japanese are a health-conscious bunch and gelato has much less fat than regular ice cream!

Waffle with choice of gelato
S$5.80++
Rating:

It’s a long wait, though, as the waffle is made from scratch on the spot. But it’s well worth the wait. At my next visit, I’m having the tofu cheesecake. I’ve never had one before!

As I was going around checking out the food stations, one particular station piqued my interest. It’s a pizza station! These Japanese pizzas are wafer-thin and certainly do not resemble the common pizzas!

This is a plastic replica of the pizza. Look just how thin it is! I was rather pleased to see these plastic food replicas at every food station here, the way many restaurants in Japan have them!

I really enjoy the wide array of Japanese food here. There are so many different dishes to sample such that even the fussiest eater (and by that I really mean me) would find something he or she loves. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

Shokudo Japanese Food Bazaar
Raffles City Shopping Centre
252 North Bridge Road #B1-44E
Singapore 179103
Tel: +65 6837 3793
Service:

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/food/shokudo-japanese-food-bazaar/ | 28 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net
