Hi,

I reallly like your post about bangkok tour. I would like to ask any suggestion if i will get a tour package or by my own self. This will be my first time to visit bangkok. I’m with my father and mother. We have 3 days and 2 nights. arrived bangkok international airport at 15:00 pm then will live on the 3rd day at 19:00 going back to manila. I would appreciate if you can suggest what and where i must go there.. and where the best place to stay:)

Hi Veron,
Your BKK page brought back combined memories of my trips there of 2002 and more recently of Oct. 2008. The 2002 trip had been with my ex-wife and my son, and we were more or less insulated from the rigours of the high street.
My 2008 trip had been solo, and was more at street level. Yeah, tell me about the tuk tuk chaps: real vultures, they are. And I wish you had used the ‘xxx’ term with regards to them, for, as a solo male, I saw that most of them want to take you to the naughty areas. One chap promised me that he was merely going to drive me around those areas without stopping, but put me through the whole works! I just about managed to escape, making excuses about my age, my slightly diabetic condition and stories like that.
I was staying on Khao San Road, very close to the Democracy monument. Good you managed to enter it and all: I tried, then chickened out, as the traffic never seemed to cease. Rare shots about the Golden Mount too: I saw it from a distance, wasn’t in a mood to go up, as I’d just escaped from a ‘xxx’ tuktuk chap, who immediately switched his bait (when I told him the age and diabetic story) to taking me to a 30′ tall standing Buddha.
I never manged to locate the Giant Swing: you are luckier there.
All in all, a terrific jog down memory lane, thanks to you. Thank you very, very much.

Now I feel great about having been to the top of the Golden Mount :P The best time to visit Bangkok is probably during the month of December. The weather is cooler and it hardly ever rains!

Just out of curiosity, how often do you travel to Bangkok? You seem to be a frequent visitor there!

Glad you managed to climb to the top of Wat Saket (The Golden Mount) – when i was there in October it was raining cats & dogs, so they close the access staircase to the top to prevent people from getting soaked in the rain & struck by lightning!
Totally agree with you on the tuk tuks, i avoid them like the plague – they try to rip you off at every chance and take you to their cronies such as the tailor shops, jewelery shops etc..

Yup, Bangkok is so great for shopping that many people tend to focus on that and less on the sights. The culture there is so diverse and it’s wonderful to get a taste of it every now and then :)

I’ve just returned from a trip there and started on a new blog series on it :) Oh I didn’t stay at Centrepoint Petchburi this time round. They’ve increased their prices. Bummer!

What a wonder coverage you have in Bangkok. Usually most of the locals here go Bangkok for shopping and it was your blog that cover extensively on the tourist sites that attracted my attention. Also the fact that i check into the same hotel at Petchuburi. Wish to have visited your blog earlier before my trip last Dec 2008.

Hey Nat, I’m glad that you are not too bothered with those jewellery store detours. I guess many of us are upset with these tuk-tuk drivers because they take us to these places without our permission. When we’re on their vehicle already we are completely at their mercy.

When I am touring a country, the time I get to spend there is always very limited. The last thing I need is any interruption that would disrupt my entire schedule for the day, especially when I need to get to a place by a certain time (temples and other religious and touristy places tend to have predesignated closing hours).

And oh, I did get to visit the Grand Palace the following day! So I came back a happy girl after all :)

heys, ive jus gotten back from bkk last night and i have to tell you this. the one about the tuk-tuk drivers bringing you to this jewelery place, is a total misconception! i think its the govt’s who’s providing the icnentive so that you can know more abt their gem making process.

since it benefits you, why not? if im not wrong, the jewelery place offers free drinks too! silly me thought it was some bad thing and embarrassed myself infront of my friends, all of whom, have already been to bkk and thru the same process before.

sorry that you didnt accomplish ur goal of entering the grand palace tt day though. :D

wow ! a bumper collection of photos - took a long time for my browser to load until it hung...:(
but i managed to read after i turned off the images,

tell us more abt ayutthaya yah ? wanted to go there next time i make my annual prilmerage to BKK. if possible tell us how much the train tickets, and did youbook in advance ?

read that you wanted to watch a movie- shld try , the cinema is comparable to SIN equally comfortble and the interesting thing is, before the movie commence, they will run a short tribute to the king and everyone in the cinema has to rise - like singing our national anthem.

if you are back in BKK, and have some time, can consider visiting Silom 9 night market - smaller version of chatuchak, excpet not so hot.

another place is sirocco towers - imagine our New Asia Bar except its open air on the 61st floor. its near patpong, heading towards shangri la hotel - shld be on your map.
