Being here just feels so dreamy. All of Andy’s toys — Woody, Rex, Slinky — are in giant sizes so you feel as though you have been shrunk down to the size of toys!

Themed after the Bucket O Soldiers, The Toy Soldier Parachute Drop is an enjoyable ride where you go 25 meters up in the air with feet dangling in nothingness, then fall like a simulated parachute drop. It’s really fun!

Once the ride begins, the feeling up there is top-of-the-world awesome. I think this is one of the highest points you can reach at Hong Kong Disneyland. You get a true bird’s eye view of the park, and perhaps more unexpectedly, a glimpse at the lands that are still under construction. The view is just fantastic!

You can also ride in Slinky at the Slinky Dog Spin, which I guess is more catered to kids. It goes round and round, as though Slinky is trying to catch his own tail.

If you’re in the mood for something scarier, take the RC Racer!

RC Racer is a high speed U-shaped coaster similar to the pirate ship rides at amusement parks. From the ground, it sure looks like one heck of a scary ride. In fact, it took me a long while to contemplate whether to go on it or simply stick with the kiddy ones like the Slinky Dog. I finally decided that it’s now or never! Who knows when is the next time I’ll get to visit Disneyland again, right?

I opted to sit in one of the centre rows as I’m not much of a daredevil (though I did bungee jump once). But if you are, jump into a seat in the last row. Actually regardless of what you choose to sit, you definitely still feel those stomach-churning drops.

It starts off rather slow at first before quickly building up to the climax. That’s when the ride reaches its maximum height and a near vertical position as you brace yourself for the highest drop. What a thrill! Boy, even just writing this gets my adrenaline pumping. You may wanna mentally prepare yourself before the ride. Or not. Just go with it and enjoy the speedy ride!

And at Toy Story Land, even the toilets have a sign made from huge Scrabble tiles! When you are a Toy Story fan, Toy Story Land is truly the best place on earth to be in!

Adventureland

Entering Adventureland is like walking into an exotic tropical jungle a la The Lion King and Tarzan. It is filled with lush greenery and foliage, complete with Tiki torches and even a river!

For a ride on the wild side, take the Jungle River Cruise. It is available in three languages — English, Mandarin or Cantonese — so do make sure you join the right queue. The vessel also goes round Tarzan’s Treehouse.

The wait can be quite long, but once your turn comes, you are rewarded with an entertaining jungle ride led by a very humorous skipper. The route passes Cambodian ruins, and into Africa where you get to meet animals like elephants, gorillas, zebras and rhinoceroses.

Credit

At one point, you even see people climbing up a tree trying to escape from an angry rhino and a pack of laughing hyenas.

The most exciting part has to be the head hunter territory, which has skulls impaled on sticks as a warning to visitors. Need I say more?

Credit

This is one adventurous journey that is filled with water and flames and gives you one heck of an experience!

Within each land, there are a number of restaurants and cafés where you can rest your feet and grab a bite. Each one is themed after the land it is in.

Tahitian Terrace is a casual eatery in Adventureland that sells several Asian dishes such as Penang laksa, tandoori lamb kebab and tom yum noodles.

Chinese style roast chicken
HK$65

Served with steamed rice and chicken broth, the Chinese style roast chicken is quite similar to the soy chicken rice dish in Singapore, except with the obvious difference that the rice isn’t oily.

Tandoori chicken
HK$75

You will also find a surprisingly large selection of Indian dishes, including quite a few vegetarian items. The tandoori chicken is accompanied by Makhani sauce, biryani rice and some vegetables.

Tomorrowland

For more thrills and excitement, you gotta check out Tomorrowland. This is where the legendary Space Mountain ride is, along with other outer space-themed attractions like the Orbitron:

Can this be the spaceship that Buzz Lightyear was looking for in Toy Story?

This is also where we chanced upon an unexpected visitor… Push, the Talking Trash Can! He looks exactly like any other trash can at the park, except that well, he moves about and speaks in a robotic voice! I was half expecting him to say “Waaaaaall·E”.

You gotta check out the video above. This cute talking trash can sure amused us onlookers! You know you are in Disneyland, but no one expects to see a moving trash can!

Here’s the iconic Space Mountain that houses a dizzying indoor roller-coaster. This is also where I took the scariest ride of a lifetime.

It is almost completely dark during the ride, so dark that you can’t even see the person seated right next to you. In the midst of all that darkness, you are sent through continuous rapid twists and 180 degree-turnarounds without knowing what lies ahead, when the next turn will come, or when the journey will end. Seems like forever!

I’m known to friends as being quite brave, but this Space Mountain ride really scared me. From the looks of the other passengers who came out after the ride with pale faces and wobbly legs, I know I’m not just being a scaredy-cat! A couple of hours after the ride, one guy was still rubbing ointment on his temples! Has anyone taken the Space Mountain ride at Hong Kong Disneyland? Please share your experiences! Do you find it as scary?

Even after having taken the same ride at Tokyo Disneyland, I don’t remember it being this terrifyingly thrilling. Strictly not for the weak-hearted. You have been warned!

After the pitch-dark ride, it got me wondering about what really is in there. If you are just as curious, search for “space mountain lights on” on Youtube. There are quite a number of videos that show the ride with the lights on. And my, it really is awesome. I don’t mean awesome as in the “oh my god wasn’t Toy Story 3 just awesome” sense of the word. I mean awesome as in literally awe-inspiring. The steel structure is just a majestic work of art! You have to see it to believe it.

For now, let’s go to my most favourite ride at Hong Kong Disneyland — Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters!

To infinity and beyond!

“Whooooaaaa…”

Before the ride begins, you are given a briefing by Buzz himself in this video below. During the ride you sit in neon coloured cars, go through a tunnel filled with minions of the evil Zurg, and shoot at them with laser guns. In so doing, you will help Buzz Lightyear protect the Galaxy from the threat of invasion from the evil Emperor Zurg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance! (Yes, he actually says that in the movie.)

Whilst shooting at enemies, you earn points at the same time. Just be sure to aim the red laser point correctly at the targets. This ride is so fun and interactive, I took it twice just to see if I could better my score the first time! I’ll gladly take it again the next time I visit Disneyland. It is that fun! My friends who have taken the same ride concur too.

Hong Kong Disneyland Merchandise

The various merchandise stores and kiosks at the park sell a wide range of gifts and toys, including the ones from Toy Story!

The Woody toy even comes with a pull string that makes him talk, just like in the movies!

Of course, Buzz Lightyear the coolest toy in the world is available too.

So is Lots-O’-Huggin’ Bear who looks oddly cuddly here.

Precious Moments Monsters Inc

Of all the toys, I am most entertained by these Minnie and Sulley (from Monsters Inc) dolls that dance when activated by sound/touch. That is probably why the tickets feature Toy Story characters. I’m especially thrilled because the Toy Story films are my favourite Disney/Pixar movies, and the characters feature quite heavily throughout various attractions in the park. Plus, you can keep these passes as souvenirs afterwards.

Here it is, the Disney Train Station and the iconic Mickey Mouse head made out of colourful flowers and plants!

And we’re in!

Flights of Fantasy Parade

One of the best highlights at Hong Kong Disneyland is the Flights of Fantasy Parade. You should get there about 15 minutes in advance to secure a good viewing spot along Main Street USA.

So it begins!

<img src="http://sparklette.net/archives/1288/hong-kong-disneyland-parade.jpg" width="560" height="420" alt="Hong Kong Disneyland - The Disneyland Band"" title="Hong Kong Disneyland - The Disneyland Band" />
The Disneyland Band

<img src="http://sparklette.net/archives/1288/hong-kong-disneyland-parade-jumbo-elephant.jpg" width="560" height="420" alt="Hong Kong Disneyland - Flights of Fantasy Parade"" title="Hong Kong Disneyland - Flights of Fantasy Parade" />
Dumbo

The parade includes seven elaborate floats and various Disney characters such as:

Mickey and friends

Dumbo

Winnie the Pooh

Snow White

Cinderella

Belle

Simba

Tinkerbell

Stitch

Woody & Buzz Lightyear

<img src="http://sparklette.net/archives/1288/hong-kong-disneyland-parade-mickey-mouse.jpg" width="560" height="740" alt="Hong Kong Disneyland - Flights of Fantasy Parade"" title="Hong Kong Disneyland - Flights of Fantasy Parade" />

That’s Mickey’s Magical Airship! I’m ashamed to admit that I actually don’t know most of the characters on it.

It’s not just about the floats though; there is also music, the Disneyland Band, dancing, acrobatics and various performers coming together to put up a continuously entertaining parade. Don’t just take my word for it though; watch these videos I recorded to get a feel of this one-of-a-kind experience!

My favourite float has got to be To Infinity and Beyond, featuring — who else — the Toy Story characters! It’s so cool to see the female version of the Buzz Lightyear costume, and of course Buzz Lightyear himself, along with Woody, Rex, Hamm and even the army guys (not so plastic in real life)! They are such fun, as you would see in this video:

Main Street USA

One of the attractions that I have very much been looking forward to seeing at Hong Kong Disneyland is Main Street USA, designed to resemble an early 20th-century Midwest town.

Why don’t we have such nice houses here in Singapore?

The beautiful houses and shops lining the street from end to end make you feel as though you’re in a different place and time!

Every tiny detail such as the pastel colours of the façades, the names painted in the windows, and the fonts used on the signs are a work of art.

I can’t get enough of how pretty the sweets shop looks. I love the baby pink and blue shades, the deep red awning and the large sweet displayed at the side of the store entrance.

Even the vehicles at Main Street USA are so unique. You can check out my Tokyo Disneyland post to see what it’s like. Basically it has a lot of happy music and tiny people throughout.

Apart from rides, there are quite a number of entertainment shows and even a 4D movie that you can sit in to watch with special glasses.

The Golden Mickeys show

The Golden Mickeys is a musical/theatre show played live on the stage. Disney characters and dancers in character costumes perform songs from these films:

Toy Story

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Tarzan

Mulan

Lilo and Stitch

The Little Mermaid

Beauty and the Beast

It even thrills you at times with aerial acrobatics, martial arts and good looking cast members.

The whole show has me hooked from the beginning to the end, but my favourite part is again the Toy Story segment. It features the cheery You’ve Got a Friend in Me (a song which I love to bits) from the movie soundtrack. Check it out in the video below. Plus, ever wonder what Mickey will sound like when he speaks in Cantonese? You can hear him at the beginning of the video. I have no idea what he says though!

Love this show!

When it’s time for the Disney in the Stars fireworks at night, that’s when you truly get to see how many visitors there are at Hong Kong Disneyland. It’s like going to Chinatown on Chinese New Year. Everyone in the park is gathered at the front of the castle to catch the colourful fireworks.

Credit

And what a massive show it is. The fireworks last for the whole of 12 minutes! Very impressive. You can hardly ever get tired of fireworks regardless of how many times you’ve seen them. With the thin baked crust blended well with the soft and smooth filling, this is pleasantly sweet minus the excessive sugar rush.

The coconut mooncake has a nice fragrant filling, but is a tad dry and rough-textured for my liking.

If you are a fan of red bean, you would enjoy the mooncake that is completely filled with the deep red paste. The paste is surprisingly smooth and homogeneous, with a dominant bean flavour.

Taste-wise, they are definitely less sweet than most mooncakes I have eaten here. Apart from that there does not appear to be any distinct difference between these mooncakes from China and the ones in Singapore.

Park Hyatt Shanghai

Kyo also shared some pictures that he took at Park Hyatt Shanghai, which occupies the 79th to 93rd floors of the Shanghai World Financial Center, none other than the tallest building in China! That is the skyscraper on the right in the picture above. The spiky building to the left is sister hotel Grand Hyatt Shanghai.

To buy the mooncakes, you would head up to the hotel’s lobby on the 87th floor in a high-speed elevator. The Living Room lounge is located on the same floor. Relaxing here over some tea and mooncakes with clouds floating past the windows must be quite an experience! (Random fact: According to Kyo, the toilets here are operated by remote control systems!)

Here’s the view from the top. After all, this town located to the west of Hong Kong Island boasts few shopping malls and tourist spots. Unless you are a fan of dried seafood, of which the streets of Sheung Wan are brimming with, you probably would not visit this area.

Go off the beaten path in Hong Kong.

But, if you take a step closer to this town, where locals and expatriates alike jostle for the same living space, you will catch a glimpse of the other side of Hong Kong that is often hidden from tourists.

And by this I am referring to the rich and diverse food culture.

Although yours truly have been living here for just slightly over a year, I am somewhat unadventurous in sampling the vast array of food available at this foodie heaven. Yet even with my somewhat limited gastronomical knowledge of Sheung Wan, I can easily churn out an entire day’s worth of food adventures for those of you who love to eat your way through a holiday.

Let’s loosen that belt and get started, shall we?

Breakfast: Dim Sum

What better way to start off your day than with a hearty traditional breakfast? In the morning, head over to Dim Sum Square, located at 88 Jervois Street. This tiny eatery is a hidden gem where you can get dim sum at very good prices and the service is extremely friendly. Highly recommended are the beef balls (HK$10), chicken and Chinese mushroom with bean curd wrapping (HK$18) and crispy BBQ pork bun (HK$15).

And yes, the last dish is commonly known as char siew bao, but have you ever tried it deep fried? Didn’t think so. I have been here a couple of times and seldom spend more than HK$50 a person for a satisfying meal.

Now that you have fueled up properly for the day ahead, take a walk up the slope (you’ll need the exercise) to visit the famous Man Mo Temple at Hollywood Street. Feel free to explore the numerous antique shops dotting the area.

Lunch: Bak Kut Teh

Credit

By late morning, you should be ready for your next food adventure. Head down to Queen’s Road Central for a dose of Malaysian goodness in the form of Yeoh’s Bah Kut Teh. There are few places in Hong Kong where you can have authentic bak kut teh (pork cooked in herbal soup). Yeoh’s is one of them.

This place serves set meals for two, but the portions are really good enough for three (approximately HK$130)! The highlights include a claypot of yook kuat cha (bak kut teh in Cantonese) and vegetables cooked in the style you prefer (I recommend the sambal belacan).

What is the difference between the Malaysian and Singaporean versions of bak kut teh? The former is dark brown due to the heavy use of herbs, while the latter usually has a clear soup base with a strong peppery taste.

After lunch, head down to the small streets of Sheung Wan to shop for dried seafood and the very herbs used to brew the delicious bak kut teh.

Teatime: Honeymoon Dessert

If it wasn’t for my Singaporean friends who pointed it out to me, I would have totally missed the Honeymoon Dessert outlet located within the historical building of Western Market. This famous franchise whips up a dazzling array of desserts using tantalizing ingredients such as durian, mango, sago, ice creams, black jelly and sesame paste.

The dish pictured above combines green tea and vanilla ice cream with a spoonful of black jelly and sliced strawberry, all deliciously soaking in sweet vanilla sauce. Priced at a mere HK$38, it is a taste of heaven ’til the very last drop. If you have tried the same fares at the VivoCity outlet in Singapore, the real thing is much better!

When you are done, head out to the nearby foot reflexology shops and have a relaxing foot rub before your biggest food adventure yet.

Dinner: International Buffet

They say you should have breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper. But let’s throw that to the wind while we’re on a foodie adventure! By now you should be ravenous enough to eat up a storm, and I would highly recommend going for the international buffet at Cafe 508, Trader’s Hotel (formerly known as Cafe Jen at Jen Hotel). It is situated at Sai Ying Pun. A cab ride there should cost you less than HK$30.

Try to reserve a table in advance. Averaging at HK$220 a person (promotions vary daily), the restaurant is popular among locals who know a good bargain when they see one.

The buffet spread may not be that fabulous, but this is where I had some of the best sushi, sashimi and raw seafood. The cooked food items, encompassing Chinese, Western and Indian, are good enough for you to spend some happy hours by the buffet line. Also worth mentioning is the delicious array of desserts. You may want to avoid the cook-on-demand section though.

All stuffed to the brim? Take a slow walk back to Sheung Wan and admire the sights of old buildings along the way. The stroll would take you some 30 minutes — just in time for supper!

Supper: Roadside Wonton

Your foodie day out in Hong Kong would not be complete without a daring experience eating by the sidewalk. I encourage you to check out the popular wonton noodle stall at Hollywood Road. This stall is located on a hilly slope, complete with rickety tables and shaky stools. Now that’s an authentic roadside dining experience!

Hong Kong-style wonton noodle is commonly served in soup. If you want it dry, with char siew (BBQ pork) or chilli, you would need to ask for it specifically. For less than HK$30, this should last you for the night.

Is your waistline ready for a major food invasion? My only regret is not having paid it a second visit, or seen anyone famous there since it’s a popular spot for stars.

Lantau island and Macau provide several eye-opening experiences, beautiful scenery and architecture, and interesting cultural sights. Visitors that haven’t ventured to Lantau island have definitely missed the most beautiful part of Hong Kong.

When it comes to food, I really love the desserts. What a wide plethora of choices from fruits, cakes, puddings, breads, pastries, bubble teas, and so much more!

Frankly, I find that shopping in Hong Kong is overrated. Their famous shopping malls like Timesquare and Harbour City are somewhat similar to what we have in Singapore. The prices and brand names they carry are almost exactly the same as what we have here.

Ladies’ Market fares better, but I definitely had a better time at the chatuchak market in Bangkok.

Would I go travelling alone again? Yes! My main purpose in visiting Lantau Island was to see the Giant Buddha. It was a super long bus ride but along the way, there was plenty of amazing scenery. In the movie Initial D, there is this scene where Jay Chou and his girlfriend are sitting by a beautiful lake with mountains in the backdrop. The scene is breathtaking, and this was just like that!

Then, I saw the Giant Buddha from miles away, perched on a high hilltop. (The picture was taken from the moving bus, hence, the blurriness.)

It was a steep and narrow climb up to the top but we made it. There! Check out that staircase leading up to the Buddha. And of course, I HAD to be wearing heels, and just for that one day too.

I reached the top and the Buddha was like, waving to me.

He was huge all right!

Views from up there.

Then came the steep descent down the staircase and on to Po Lin Monastery. Boy, was the whole place overrun with tourists!

An old nun, who was dozing off, then waking up, then dozing off, and waking up all the time.

After that, I took another bus down to Tai O. It’s a fishing village located on the extreme Western end of the island. I thought it would be interesting to check out how the people lived.

People fished for a living and then sold it at the market.

Check out the size of that fish! But having seen Tai O, it’s really not the case.

Small home on a boat.

Walking along the empty road, I could see some old people sitting and lazing outside their homes by the sea.

A narrow alley between houses.

Stilt houses with hills as a backdrop.

A small local Christian school.

There were some skinny cats living in this fishing village too. It was definitely a refreshing change from the usual skyscrapers and people walking around in suits. Here, people wore slacks and straw hats, and seemed more simple and carefree in their fishing homes by the sea and mountains.

After that I had to leave Lantau Island and return to Hong Kong island. My plan was to go to Macau and by then it was already late afternoon. The weird thing was, Tai O was of the closest proximity to Macau but there was no means of getting to Macau from there. So I had to make my long journey back to Hong Kong island, and then take the turbojet from there.

In Hong Kong, there are plenty of high-rise apartments that would put those in Singapore to shame. This one was fifty storeys easy!

The turbojet at Shun Tak Center located on Hong Kong island. They have very frequent rides to Macau.

Boarding…

Aboard the turbojet.

The ride was approximately an hour long and I slept like a baby throughout. When it reached Macau, I was dumbstruck by this bridge that I saw from my window.

It looked like a dream! A great pity the windows were so foggy. The bridge was so beeeautiful! I still don’t know what the name of the bridge is. No chance of getting a good picture too.

Update: This bridge is known as Ponte De Amizade in Portuguese, or the Bridge of Friendship. Thanks, Marc.

Got my passport stamped and wanted to go exchange for Macau currency, when I was told that Hong Kong dollars were also accepted. When I got out of the ferry terminal I was besieged by people wanting to drive me to a few touristy places for 200 Hong Kong dollars. Yeah sure, when I could take the public bus for just 2.50.

I got off at Senada Square and was again dumbstruck. Everything from the buildings, to the lamp posts, to the flowers were oh-so-beautiful. Here’s their post office.

I’m not so sure about the history of Macau. A beautiful church with a violent history. There had been people murdered during mass. It was once used as a barracks too.

I made my way to the old ruins of St. Paul’s (Sao Paulo, like the Brazilian soccer club). It used to be one of Macau’s biggest churches but was almost completely destroyed in a fire. Now all that remained was its frontal stone facade.

After that I went looking for dinner. Along the way, there were many shops selling bak kwa (sweet roasted meat) except that it wasn’t pork. They had wild boar and ostrich meat, just to name a few animals. I tried out some but still preferred the Singaporean version.

Kites!

Dinner was at this Chinese restaurant and I had curry cod fish rice and barbecued chicken. It didn’t come cheap. And for the curry they even asked whether I wanted it beef-flavoured or pork-flavoured, which I thought was pretty odd.

I decided to go check out the biggest casino in Macau, the Casino Lisboa. The waitress at the restaurant seemed pretty shocked when I told her I was going there. She thought it’s no place for a single young lady. I hadn’t actually intended to go gambling, but since I was in the Las Vegas of the East, I thought what the heck! It was my first time in a casino, so I was banking on having some beginner’s luck! And I turned 21 that day too, so there comes the birthday luck!

I went from table to table watching the games and then I couldn’t resist. Got 300 Hong Kong dollars worth of counters and started playing. Their card games seemed to operate by different rules. The blackjack game was quite different from the one I know. It was interesting watching the people play. The guy would tap the table if he wanted another card, and wave his hand if he didn’t. I was trying to learn it so I would seem like a pro.

I played this dice game where people placed bets on “big”, “small”, specific numbers, etc. I would win some and lose some, until in the end I lost everything! I could get more counters but I told myself not to. Then this Hong Kong guy in a grey suit came up and tried to talk to me but I left the place.

I went looking for a place to sit down and think over my gambling experience before heading back to Hong Kong. But at 12 midnight most of the places were closed. Managed to find a small café for dessert. I had iced coffee which was yummy…

…plus a banana split. It was all fruits and came with two vanilla scoops and one unidentified yellow scoop. Weird! I thought banana splits would be chocolate, vanilla and strawberry scoops.

Couldn’t finish everything. I came to realise that so far, I hadn’t managed to finish anything off my plate in Hong Kong and Macau. The food they served seemed to always come in big servings. Anyway I took a cab back to the ferry terminal to catch a ride back to Hong Kong.

They had turbojet rides round the clock so I wasn’t too worried about not making it back. My ride was at 1am, and again I slept like a baby all the way back.

This was easily my most memorable day throughout the trip. I got to see the unique things in Hong Kong (and Macau), the cultures, and experienced the way the locals live. Travel on the same public bus they do, eat the same common food they eat. And until the day I can find a travelling partner who shares the same beliefs, I shall carry on going solo.

These posts may be related

<img src="http://cdn.sparklette.net/wp-content/themes/v2/thumb.php?src=/wp-content/blogs.dir/5/files/2010/11/scmp-christmas.jpg&h=60&w=60&zc=1" width="60" height="60" alt="Headed to Hong Kong this holiday? They sold mainly clothes, accessories, toys, VCDs, and I noticed that out of every four or five stalls, there would be someone selling fake branded bags.

Colourful wigs!

Light saber sticks?

And these nodding toys! I had never seen such a huge variety of these toys in Singapore. They had Little Twin Stars, Snoopy and even a fortune kitty one! I didn’t get any in the end because I already have a few lying around in my house. But I was pretty tempted though.

The Hong Kongers seem to pay great importance to their desserts. I had mixed fruits…

Glutinous rice balls in mango juice. Yummy yummy yummy.

Coconut juice pudding with red beans. Wasn’t yummy. I admit it, I got this only because it looked pretty.

There were also a bunch of food stalls along the street and they sold smelly beancurd. I could smell them even as I was trying on clothes in another store. I didn’t like the smell one bit but if I was to chance upon a beancurd seller again, I should probably get some out of curiosity.

At one building, there was an entire storey dedicated to toys. But surprisingly none of them stocked any Care Bears at all. Apparently the most popular toy in Hong Kong is the Doraemon.

I went to this bubble tea café and had a chocolate mint drink. It didn’t taste as good as it looked.

Then it rained again. But I was fine with it because I had done enough shopping to keep myself satisfied. I even wanted to visit Lan Kwai Fong again but I was simply carrying too many things.

Came back with a heap of clothes, shades, and this bright red Le Coq Sportif bag. I love Le Coq Sportif! Now, I wonder how I’m gonna bring all this stuff back to Singapore?

And I turn 21 finally. Can’t say I’m too happy or sad. It’s just another day.

As for the last day in Hong Kong, I would probably take a quick trip to Macau. I just hope I don’t wake up too late again.

These posts may be related

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 2) – Adventureland, Tomorrowland & the New Toy Story Land [Photos & Videos]
5,806

Xin Wang Hong Kong Café – Fun to Dine, Dining with Fun!
2,405

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 1) – Main Street USA, Fantasyland & the Castle [Photos & Videos]
5,706

Sparklette is going to Hong Kong Disneyland!
1,222

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/china/hong-kong-day-3/ | 15 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Hong Kong (Day 2)

China & Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Day 2 in Hong Kong kicked off with a bad start. The first day I couldn’t go to the Peak because it was raining. The second day when I made it this far, got onto the tram, and it had engine problems! I had no choice but to give the Peak a complete miss.

At the tram terminal, I ran into Henry, a South American dude from Venezuela where they have all the gorgeous beauty queens. He was also a solo traveller and didn’t know what to do in Hong Kong. So I said, let’s go take the Star Ferry to Kowloon!

The ferry ride was extremely cheap at 2.20 HKD. We got some good views of the Hong Kong skyline onboard. There’s the Hong Kong convention and exhibition centre.

And my favourite, the Bank of China tower. It’s the one with the diagonal lines and a pair of chopsticks on top.

When the ferry arrived at the Kowloon pier, I was quite amused to see that the pier had been built to look like the ferries themselves. How cute!

There was a whole bunch of shops near the pier and everywhere we went, Indians would approach and try to get henry to make suits with them. They probably saw all caucasian-looking guys as walking dollar bills.

We went to the Peninsula Hotel to take pictures, where some of the James Bond movies had been filmed. It looked really grand.

Then Henry and I parted ways as I wanted to do some shopping, while he was off to check out the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Bad move! It started raining shortly after, and he had an umbrella! I went to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre anyway. Here’s a view of the clock tower taken from the cultural centre.

There’s also a model of miniature buildings around. The cute dome shape in the bottom left is the Hong Kong space museum.

See?

I happened to pass by the Avenue of Stars then. It didn’t occur to me it was THAT nearby.

Most of the tiles on the ground didn’t have handprints on them, although they had names of famous people such as Jackie Chan.

Andy Lau

Jet Li has freakishly small hands!

Then there’s Bruce Lee who had been honoured with a star.

These placeholder tiles were reserved for Chow Yun Fat and Stephen Chow.

It was quite fun spotting those tiles. There were also these cute looking stalls selling snacks and drinks.

Views of the Hong Kong skyline from the Avenue of Stars.

Engrish! Sounded like “kill the lovely plants” to me.

I had a meal at the nearby New World Centre.

Loved the ceiling lights that kept changing colours!

I had unagi rice at a Japanese restaurant. It was yummy!

There were some interesting things on display inside New World Centre, such as live parrots and a rather adorable toucan. There were some cool vehicles too.

An old timer. Pass with care!

After that I went back to the Avenue of Stars to catch the nightly Symphony of Lights at 8pm. For that night, they had special fireworks as well. Throngs of people, Hong Kongers and tourists alike, were waiting there for it to start. The Hong Kong skyline at night was truly spectacular.

And then it rained!!! Bloody hell. Everyone had umbrellas except for me. But luckily I found shelter pretty quickly. The symphony of lights was amazing! It lasted about half an hour with plenty of fireworks bursting from all the towers, and lights dancing and everything. I don’t know how to describe it! Nor could my camera capture anything decently. But nonetheless, I’m really glad I got to witness it.

I went back to Hong Kong island and headed for Lan Kwai Fong. It’s Hong Kong’s equivalent of our Mohammad Sultan. I had some trouble finding it at first until I stumbled across a staircase with a sign that read “this way to Lan Kwai Fong — 24 hours access”. Yahoo!

I liked this “LOST” signboard because it reminded me of the TV series.

Lan Kwai Fong was crowded with people looking for a good time, mostly caucasians. There were pubs and restaurants and cafés and on the streets, there were a lot of foodstalls and mainly beer stalls. It was very cool. They sold beer cheaply and people could just grab one and go. And there was a long queue forming at this lan kwai fong beer stall. Everyone was aiming for this!

It’s a long tube container with a velcro strap around it so that people could just wear it around their neck and go. And sure enough, everyone had at least one of those around their necks. And the best thing was that it cost only 45 Hong Kong bucks. That’s less than ten Singapore dollars — very cheap for that much beer! I was queuing for it when I saw a familiar face. Henry! What are the odds man?

It was really happening there. But I couldn’t drink that much because I still needed to get back to the hotel on my own. So I hit the Starbucks for some hot mocha. The drinks here are pricier than Singapore’s.

The moment I entered Starbucks with all my beer, everyone turned to look and ask me how much it cost. I made it back to the hotel after that, with the nice beer tube container to keep as a souvenir. What a good day!

Back in my room, I found that the nice hotel people had provided weather forecast slips on my bed. Rain again for the following day. Argh!

Then, I hit the gym for an hour! How very sporty of me after all that beer and coffee. Then I realised what the true purpose of the glass shower room is. I could shower inside and watch TV at the same time. It took me more than an hour to shower because Jerry Maguire was showing. I love this room!

These posts may be related

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 2) – Adventureland, Tomorrowland & the New Toy Story Land [Photos & Videos]
5,806

Xin Wang Hong Kong Café – Fun to Dine, Dining with Fun!
2,405

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 1) – Main Street USA, Fantasyland & the Castle [Photos & Videos]
5,706

Sparklette is going to Hong Kong Disneyland!
1,222

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/china/hong-kong-day-2/ | 4 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Hong Kong (Day 1)

China & Hong Kong

airline food

Hong Kong

On my Cathay Pacific flight to Hong Kong, the flight attendant made sure I got my low-calorie meal. It would rain for ten minutes, then stop for ten minutes, and rain for another ten minutes, and the cycle repeats itself. My plan was to go visit the Peak, and that had to be scrapped.

My hotel room at Le Meridien is awesome. It is super clean and I don’t think I would have any trouble falling asleep at night.

The coolest part of the room has got to be the shower. It’s all glass so people in the room would be able to see you showering. How kinky! Of course, I’m staying here alone. I like it because when I’m showering, I can look at my laptop from where I am, and see if anyone has sent me a message.

And of course, there’s the plasma TV and free internet access. I flew into frenzy this afternoon when I couldn’t get connected. But managed to fix it in the end.

Strawberries and tea…

That’s about it. I decided to go check out Causeway Bay and do some shopping. It was Friday evening so the area was very crowded. And yeah Hong Kongers walk fast all right. They also tend to be attractive and well-dressed.

So it was street after street of shopping centres and I couldn’t even keep track of all their names. Most of the smaller ones looked similar. Many neon signs and colourful signboards too.

And there’s World Trade Centre which looked quite striking.

There were also a lot of people crowding around this pet shop in a street corner that sold puppies. It was the only pet shop I had seen so far.

For dinner I didn’t have much of a choice since every other place was super crowded and people were forming long queues everywhere. I ate at this UCC coffee place inside sogo. Coffee plus chocolate French toast.

Then the rain came AGAIN when I was hitting the streets. I noticed Hong Kongers all carry umbrellas with them. I had to seek shelter at Timesquare. It’s a huge shopping mall with pretty much the exact same brands you find in Singapore at the same prices. Anyway there was a denim jeans exhibition going on at Timesquare which I thought was quite cool. They had faces of famous people painted on the jeans.

Here’s Leonardo da Vinci.

Sun Yat-Sen

Bruce Lee

At the end of the shopping trip I got this Precious Moment musical ornament for my room…

…and this diamante gourd pendant I had always wanted.

Let’s pray that it doesn’t rain anymore and it’ll be a more fruitful day tomorrow. Wish me luck!

These posts may be related

Hong Kong (Day 5)
11,277

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 2) – Adventureland, Tomorrowland & the New Toy Story Land [Photos & Videos]
5,806

Xin Wang Hong Kong Café – Fun to Dine, Dining with Fun!
2,405

Hong Kong Disneyland (Part 1) – Main Street USA, Fantasyland & the Castle [Photos & Videos]
5,706

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/china/hong-kong-day-1/ | 9 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net
