It is a cosy little place that also provides services like manicures, pedicures, facials and oil massages.

<img src="http://sparklette.net/archives/1227/hotel-re-massage.jpg" width="560" height="175" alt="Re!Fresh Wellness Centre at Hotel Re! After the 45-minute long session, I’m seriously considering taking up a long term massage plan with the hotel! This coming from someone that has never been a fan of massages; my past massage experiences only caused me pain and hence more anxiety. But after this particular massage, I had a good night’s sleep and for days after that, felt like all tension had been relieved from my body. Is this what a really good massage feels like? Freemasonry started out in England in the 16th century. Notable members of this highly secretive all-male society include Mozart, George Washington and Mark Twain.

But, did you know that there is a Freemason fraternity right here in Singapore? Freemasonry was first established in Singapore on December 8, 1845. Even with a lengthy history of more than 150 years, people know little about the mysterious society. Sir Stamford Raffles, the Founding Father of Singapore, was himself a Freemason!

In fact, you may have already seen the Masonic Hall numerous times before. This is the meeting place for the Masonic Club in Singapore.

Each time we visit the Singapore Philatelic Museum or the Peranakan Museum, we would usually pass by this building on Coleman Street.

The meeting room is known as the Temple. When a lodge meeting is held here, the Worshipful Master sits on the tallest chair in the group of three chairs in front.

At the second meeting room, the classic Masonic black and white checkered pattern is at the centre of the floor. A silver letter “G” hangs from the ceiling, whose meaning has never been defined. It could stand for God, it could be geometry.

Today, there are about 750 Freemasons in Singapore, all male and mostly professionals. Do you know someone that is a member of this exclusive club?

They even have a bar here which is not open to the public, as is most of the building. But there is a restaurant on the ground floor that is available to the public.

Have Your Say!

Do you know any Freemason? The first punters were welcomed at 12:18pm (local time) on the auspicious first day of Lunar New Year.

Since then, the casino has been drawing in a steady stream of visitors. The games available at the casino include baccarat, blackjack, slots and electronic game machines. Are you one of the early birds who have already been there?

One of our readers, Alwyn, has shared his exciting casino experience with us. Just in case you missed it, here’s an excerpt of what he says:

Casino update! I finally managed to pop by last evening. Basically gotta pay the S$100 + your IC. To enter scan your IC and from that time of 1st entry, it’s valid for 24 hours. If you exceed the 24 hours during your last exit, they will escort you to pay additional S$100.

Surprisingly, people were betting like there’s no tomorrow. S$500 – 1000 bets per hand was common place.

I saw young guys betting 1K per hand at blackjack, one old man and his friend lost about 10K in 1 hand of baccarat, 1 auntie won 600 after doubling down on her 11 point initial blackjack hand.

There were long queues at the cashier for people wanting to change their chips. I suggest you go to the smoking section cashier which was very quiet. People probably didn’t know it existed.

Food is cheap. There is a good mix of local food, about $4 per plate. Taste… average. Those looking for a beer I suggest buying from the drinks stall rather than at the bar. Price is 50% cheaper minus the nice glass, you drink from the can. :) At S$5 a pop.

Alwyn has related more interesting incidents and useful tips. We take you on a tour through this highly anticipated attraction. Even before the Universal Studios theme park, the country’s first ever casino, and most of the 60 restaurants are open for business, the resort has already amassed a huge crowd on its opening day!

Clearly, the casino is the biggest draw of the resort. Be honest: How many of you are already planning your trip here?

The way to the casino is a route through passageways interconnected with escalators. Attention has been paid to every detail to give the feel of a whole different world. Ambient music plays in the background while lighting effects create dancing patterns and images on the walls.

This place has got some kind of underwater theme going on. A prelude to the controversial upcoming Marine Life Park, perhaps?

Water waves ripple on the arched ceiling and floor. You feel as though the floor MIGHT be moving. Pretty cool!

The eager crowd scrutinises the casino rules and regulations, and that includes a $100 admission fee. Some people were even spotted photographing the rules for future reference! Do you think the $100 fee would turn anyone off?

Here are more information and pictures of the Sentosa casino!

A slender-legged elephant towers over the crowd near Festive Hotel. The decoration certainly emanates a festive ambience! You would find a bakery and a bar in the lobby, and a spa up the beautiful staircase.

For the well-heeled shoppers, a whole alley of designer boutiques can be found at Crockfords Tower. No sign of Victoria’s Secret yet. Also missing is Tiger Woods’ face at TAG Heuer.

In between Crockfords Tower Hotel and Hotel Michael lies an eye catching pair of sculptures. Aren’t they adorable? Uncensored, too, they are. Some time back there was a bunch of exhibits here featuring a similar chubby theme. It is probably the same artist who’s also responsible for the cute fat pigeon along Boat Quay.

Check out our dining review of The Dining Room at Crockfords Tower Hotel

This is The Dining Room at Crockfords, a 24-hour restaurant specialising in Chinese/Cantonese cuisines. The building’s unique shape and shiny metallic facade makes it extremely striking and iconic. You can’t help but take a second look! It isn’t everyday you get to see an adorably shaped building like this.

We spent a night here recently to find out what you can expect at this 41-room design hotel. Food, culture, music. You name it, we had it all!

Upon entering the lobby, you are greeted by the artful decor of specially commissioned paintings on the walls. Nectar, the hotel restaurant where international and local cuisines are served all day, occupies one side of the floor.

Deluxe Room

Our Deluxe room feels cosy and intimate, with comfortable twin beds, subdued lighting and soothing piped music.

Personalised service comes in many forms, from staff that know you by name, right down to the fluffy Jean Perry pillows.

If you find your pillows too hard, too soft, too high, too low, the staff would be happy to change it for you. There is even a “pillow menu”. So if you find the pillow so comfortable that you wanna bring it home, you can!

A surprise find is the Altec Lansing iPod docking station. Hey, I have one of those at home! It sure looks as though the hotel is determined to make our stay as homely and enjoyable as possible. And we are certainly determined to enjoy ourselves.

If you thought that a little bit of music and a little bit of TV is all you can get, what if I told you you could play your favourite games here, too? Xbox 360 and Nintento Wii units are available on request. Wow! I can already see the faces of all you gamers out there lighting up!

A well-stocked mini bar offers free juices (nice!) and mineral water daily. Coffee and tea (from Twinings) making facilities are available.

Due to the unusual architectural design, every room utilises a different layout. Our bathroom is hidden when you first enter the room. Before anyone starts panicking, thinking that the architect forgot to design a bathroom, turn a corner and take a look. It opens up to this:

A floor-to-ceiling view of the surrounding area! The bathroom also comes fitted with a rain shower. Awesome. Just remember to roll down the shade when you are using it. Hehe :)

The illuminated magnifying mirror is an added nice touch. Ladies, you would find it especially useful when you are applying your makeup. Never miss a spot!

Many hotels provide toiletries that are either brand-less or the house brand. Over here, you get Molton Brown. I always feel that you can tell whether a hotel cares for its guests based on the type of amenities it provides. My bleached-dry hair suffers every time I stay at a hotel. Not this time. In fact, I think the conditioner miraculously made it less hay-like than usual. Well done, Brown!

Other room facilities and amenities include:

Complimentary broadband internet access

Flat panel cable television and DVD player

Hairdryer

Electronic safe

Ironing board

Bathrobes and slippers

Of course, there’s complimentary breakfast at Nectar, too.

Like all boutique hotels, every room is individually designed. Try finding two rooms that are identical… You simply can’t!

The centrepiece of each room is either a unique photograph or a painting sourced from all over the world, including India, Dubai, Thailand and Singapore. My favourite pieces are by Thai painter, Chamnan ChongPaiboon. Many of his works depict women with a mole on their face… Well, let’s just say that I can relate.

Room categories range from the smallest (but not cramped) Superior to the largest Deep Suite. For most of the room types you can choose between a bustling city scene or a tranquil view of greenery.

Superior Room

It is worth noting that the amenities provided in every room is similar. Guests staying in the cheaper room types do not really miss out on any of the cool stuff like the iPod dock or ambient music, for instance.

Balcony Room

Bigger parties can book two adjoining Balcony rooms and share the same patio area.

Soak Room

Ah… This one is for the couples! It is easy to see why this is called the Soak Room. The tub is big enough to fit two comfortably. Soak-worthy indeed! Planning a romantic getaway? Rose petals can be provided on request. Don’t forget the wine!

Deep Suite

The luxurious suite is the most spacious of the lot and features a sitting area. This, and the Soak Room, are the two room types that come with a Nespresso machine.

Personally, I feel that tourists get the best of both worlds when staying at a hotel in this locale. Not only are you just minutes away from the central business and popular shopping areas, you get to be in one of Singapore’s most historical districts.

Tiong Bahru is amongst the oldest housing estates here. If I am not mistaken, this is the only place where you can still find the old low-rise housing built by the Singapore Improvement Trust, overseen by the British colonial rulers before the nation became independent.

Room rates start from S$228++. You can book online via Agoda or HotelsCombined.

Restaurant & Bar

Aside from staying at the hotel, you can also pop by Nectar for a meal or chill out at Halo, the open-air rooftop bar. The event brings us city dwellers to a place literally filled with nature, where everything looks so beautiful and vibrant. It’s wonderful :)

In case you missed it, here are some photos from the colourful event. This year’s theme was the colours of spring, with over a hundred species of spring flowers imported from all over the world.

On one side of this, there’s the gorgeous pink floral display with the name of the event formed using red flowers. This is what you see on the other side:

A cute and happy looking picture, with smiley faces and butterflies!

How colourful! Well I’m sure many of you are much better at identifying the flower species than I am. So if you recognise any of them here that I don’t, let me know the name!

Of course, I would pay extra attention to my favourite pink lily. Ain’t she a beauty!

Spotted a few people with their cameras waiting patiently by the side. There were bees buzzing around so these people were actually looking to get a good shot of the flowers with the bees on ‘em. See?

The huge rainbow arch made out of flowers was a huge hit with the crowd.

Try spotting the pot of gold!

Here’s another bunch of unidentified blossoms that are pretty in pink.

This being the year of the ox, the ox played a prominent role in some exhibits.

Morning glories in a brilliant shade of purple.

The tall slabs of stone with faces on them. What do you call them? Never mind. There’s the majestic Merlion in the background overlooking the whole floral extravaganza.

This time round, part of the event stretches along the palawan beach. The road by the beach is fringed with daisies in red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we had such daisies along our public roads too? They would really brighten up the place!

A series of garden displays created by local students were also showcased. Some were amazing pieces of work that really brought out the festive mood.

I like this one with a giant paintbrush and peonies on the side. The Chinese character is 春 (chūn), which means spring.

Another 春 done in a three-dimensional display.

My most favourite work is the ox made out of cane. He looked totally adorable!

It may be just me, but the event appeared to have been scaled down a little, perhaps due to the economic downturn. Nonetheless it was still spectacular. Kudos to the organisers, florists, botanists and all the gardeners that helped to inject some cheery spirit during these difficult times.

Want more pretty flowers? Through ten themed galleries, visitors can explore various aspects of the Peranakan culture, such as wedding and religion.

(I really like this sculpture of a little girl pulling her Daddy towards the main entrance of the museum. Yes, this is also the place where I found the cute cat sculpture!)

It is a good idea to start touring the museum from the ground floor gallery. Here, you would learn about the origins of the Peranakans as larger-than-life-sized portraits of Peranakans surround you.

So who are the Peranakans? When merchants and travellers came to Southeast Asia centuries ago, many settled down here and started families with the locals. Their descendants are the Peranakans, who developed a new hybrid culture with Chinese, Malay, Indian and European influences.

Once you are better acquainted with the origins of the Peranakans, advance to the second floor. Four galleries occupy this entire level, with a focus on the 12-day traditional Peranakan wedding. This was an elaborate affair that started from the time the bride left her parents’ home to when she moved in with her new in-laws.

In this display of a wedding chamber, the antique ranjan kahwain (wedding bed) is decorated with ornate carvings of fertility symbols, intricate embroidery and colourful tassels.

Here’s one customary tradition that I find particularly interesting. Before the wedding, a young boy from a family with many sons would be asked to roll across the bed three or four times. It was believed that this way, his “male energy” would increase the new bride’s chances of having baby boys.

Such multi-tiered gold pagoda trays are unique pieces used in the gift-exchanging practice between families of the bride and groom, a significant ritual during the wedding.

Nonyas (Chinese Peranakan women) are well-known for their skillfulness in embroidery and beadwork. A Nonya bride was often judged on her needlework before she was fully accepted by her new family. This is why from a young age, Nonyas had to devote long hours to perfecting their techniques.

At the museum, a whole section has been dedicated to these intricate crafts. On display are beadwork slippers, beadwork slipcases, beadwork tablecloths, beadwork vases and more!

This colourful beadwork wedding purse features deer and dragon motifs. Not only are the glass beads minuscule (typically imported from Europe), thousands of them have been painstakingly threaded together to create the densely beaded design. It would have taken a Peranakan woman of exceptional skill, not to mention time and effort, to make this purse!

To celebrate the opening of the Peranakan Museum, SingPost (Singapore’s designated provider of domestic and international postal services) has issued the world’s first beaded stamp based on this very purse, featuring caviar beads that are hand-pasted. How exquisite! It makes a really pretty souvenir, don’t you think?

And here’s the famous sarong kebaya! This still remains the attire of choice for Nonyas today. Made from an assortment of batik, embroidery, beadwork, silk, satin and organdy, these long-sleeved blouses are the result of a blend of various cultural influences.

Over the years, the silhouette of the sarong kebaya has changed from being loose-fitting to one that better accentuates the womanly figure. The most famous kebaya is probably the one worn by the SIA flight stewardesses!

As an affluent community, the Peranakans certainly spared no expense in acquiring such ornate gold jewellery! These gold tangkal (amulets) were more than just ornamental; they also served to protect the wearer from evil forces and malicious spirits.

Look closely and you would notice that a few of these are in the shape of the bagua (octagon). The bagua is a significant daoist symbol that represents balance between positive and negative cosmic forces. Word has it that this is also why the Singapore $1 coins bear the same shape. But let’s leave that story for another day, shall we?

Moving on to my most favourite part of the museum — the Religious Gallery. Traditionally Peranakans embraced a mixture of religious beliefs from China, such as Daoism, Buddhism, ancestral and spiritual worship. As they interacted with the British colonial rulers, many converted to Catholicism.

Judging from the carvings on the frame, this large piece of ornate furniture was originally a Daoist altar. When the owners converted to Catholicism, it was reused as a catholic altar with the addition of a central catholic devotional image of the Holy Family.

What you see here is the new testament in the Peranakan language of Baba Malay. Despite its long history — it was published in Singapore in 1913 — what really intrigues me is the next exhibit.

This ornamented mid-size crucifix is undoubtedly one of the museum’s rarest artifacts, if not the rarest. Crafted out of rosewood with mother-of-pearl inlays, it holds a sacred relic of the true cross. Yes, that’s the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Fragments of the cross were distributed after it was found in the early 4th century, one of which is now contained in this crucifix.

Within this same gallery at the end of a dark corridor, you should notice a mirror on which a rather unsettling large red X is taped. You may wish to turn away, for this leads to a gloomy room decked out like a Peranakan funeral wake. There’s even a real coffin decorated with a colourful embroidered cover, complete with background sounds of mourners.

“The coffin is actually not empty, we’ve put some wood inside, because our belief is that a coffin cannot be left empty or it calls for someone,” says Randall Ee, a curator at the museum.

Ahem, that’s a little too creepy for me! Now, how about something a little less gloomy?

These colourful containers are kamchengs (covered containers used for storing food, drinking water and desserts), the most recognised form of Nonyaware. While Chinese utensils tend to be plainly decorated with pale colours, Nonyaware is distinguished by their vivid enameled tints on a brilliantly-coloured background, with auspicious phoenix and peony motifs.

“The Chinese wanted to appreciate the whiteness on their porcelains because it tells you of the quality of the firing, but the Peranakans appreciated the colour and the form — not so much the porcelain — so their porcelain is completely covered with colour,” Ee explained.

Kamchengs of this size were very rare and could only be afforded by the wealthiest Peranakan families. Notice how the lid is topped with a finial in the shape of a qilin (a Chinese mythical animal)? I find this detail very cute!

So far we have seen many treasured antiques of the Peranakans. But there are also modern exhibits such as contemporary paintings. Kenson Kwok, the museum director says, “We don’t want the museum to be seen just as a celebration of the past. It is also a record of the present, and we have tried to look at the taste of the Peranakan and re-interpret it in a contemporary way.”

Adoring the Phoenix is a pair of acrylic paintings done by local artist Desmond Sim in 2007. Set on oval-shaped canvases, the artist has chosen to paint this in the rich, vivid colours favoured by the Peranakans. Once again, there’s the peony and the phoenix, two recurring elements in Peranakan arts.

A temporary exhibition titled “Junk to Jewels” showcases personal items on loan from several Peranakan families. Exhibits include toys, kueh ku (a type of Peranakan cake) moulds, recipe books, beadwork items, wedding shoes from the 1900s and jewellery.

Each exhibit comes complete with its own personal story, allowing us to better relate to the objects and understand the lives of the Peranakans.

The gold jewellery are characterised by their finely-detailed patterns, as seen in this gold brooch.

The beautiful sarong kebaya in a combination of purple and green. On the right is the traditional wedding garment made of heavily embroidered silk worn by the Nonya brides. It is adorned with pairs of phoenixes and peonies.

As a fan of jigsaw puzzles, I find the unusual Zag-Zaw picture puzzle particularly intriguing. The pieces are hand-cut into irregular shapes, much unlike modern puzzles. To top it all, the puzzle do not come with any guide or illustration, making it extremely difficult to assemble. From the little story, it seems that no one in the family has managed to put the pieces together. I wonder if we can still find this anywhere today? I would love to give it a go!

So, are you ready to immerse yourself in the colourful world of the Peranakans? Take a trip to this vibrant museum. There are simply so many beautiful aspects of this vibrant ethnic culture, so many discoveries to make, you will be enchanted in no time.

Peranakan Museum
39 Armenian Street
Singapore 179941
Tel: +65 6332 7591 | Website

Opening hours:
Mon: 1-7pm
Tue to Sun: 9am – 7pm (to 9 pm on Fridays)

Admission: $6 per adult, $3 per full-time student and National Serviceman

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/singapore/peranakan-museum/ | 14 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Where in the World is This Cat Sculpture?

Singapore

trivia

I don’t often come across statues of my favourite animal. So seeing this cute life-like sculpture of a stray cat sure was a pleasant surprise! Hence this is also a prelude to my next post, which would be about my visit to this place.

I think some of you are already familiar with this cat sculpture. So can you tell where in the world I found it?

Here’s a closer look at its face! Or do you prefer something warmer and cuddlier?

Well, just a short distance away from where I saw the cat sculpture, I found a real live kitten! What a cutie! The poor little darling seems to look scared though.

So, guess where I found these kittens! I shall reveal the answer in my next post.

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/singapore/where-in-the-world-is-this-cat-sculpture/ | 8 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Where in the World is This Colourful Glass Panel?

Singapore

trivia

Beautiful things never fail to catch my attention, especially when it’s something as huge as this massive panel of decorative glass. In Singapore, there is the Chinatown street market, Chingay Parade or River Hong Bao. One other popular event is the annual Sentosa Flowers show.

At this springtime event, you get to enjoy a kaleidoscope of rare flower species imported from all over the world.

Sprawling an area of 5 hectares at Imbiah Lookout, the flower extravaganza is showcased in various zones, with each zone subtly sporting its own theme.

In Learning Journey, the lifespan of a butterfly is presented using flowering plants that have been painstakingly cut and pruned into the shapes of caterpillars and butterflies. The caterpillar even bobs its head!

Is it just me, or does the butterfly kinda resemble a bee? In my impression, butterflies have slimmer bodies!

This large flower has been constructed from several smaller flowers, like big round pompoms! I think they look cute!

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, which is usually around the same time as Chinese New Year, predesignated photography spots have been set up in the Language of Love zone. Boy, are these hot! Long queues would form at spots such as the red hearts above, with eager couples waiting their turn to get a romantic shot in front of the floral display.

Besides flowers, props are also used to enhance the presentation. From afar, these gigantic sunflowers (complete with giant bumblebees!) can be seen sprouting from the bed of regular-sized sunflowers.

I’m not quite sure what it is. Before Sentosa Flowers, I had only seen them in bouquets.

At the fountain area, swans and ducks made from flowers froli as visitors snap away with glee with their cameras.

Visitors can also purchase leaf-shaped cards where they would pen their words and attach them to trees.

Amongst the hundreds of messages of wishes and dedications to that special someone, this particular message of peace stood out for me.

Even moving away from the Imbiah area, giant floral displays can still be seen towering into the sky. Recently I managed to have a nice little getaway among the tropical islands. Well… Sort of. I paid a visit to Pulau Ubin for the first time in my life!

Pulau ubin is an off-shore island in the North East of Singapore, accessible only by water transport. (Yes, even for a small island city/country like ours, we do have even smaller islands surrounding us!) Our main purpose there was to visit Chek Jawa wetlands, a beach at the Eastern tip of the boomerang-shaped island. It is one of the last remaining pockets of biodiversity in land-scarce Singapore.

But since it was my maiden trip to this rustic island, I noted some interesting things about it.

At the entry point of Pulau Ubin, I spotted a postbox! I wonder who are the people responsible for getting the mail in and out of the island, and how often? There was also a tidal information board at one of the shops. Tidal information is particularly crucial for people visiting Chek Jawa.

Bicycles, being the primary form of transport at Pulau Ubin, can be rented cheaply at S$2 a day. There are vans and lorries too, all having license plates prefixed with “PU”. I don’t recall seeing any car at all.

There are also many dogs living on the island. I especially like this doggy! He’s just sleeping under the hot sun on the road without a care to all the bicycles whizzing right past him!

Then he wakes up. Aww… Love the bent little paw!

On to Chek Jawa wetlands! We had to go there by van, coursing through narrow roads where tree canopies from one side of the road frequently joined those from the other. We passed by a few abandoned granite quarries along the way. This is actually how the island got its name in the first place. Pulau Ubin literally means “granite island” in Malay.

Our driver was a kindly, chatty man in his 60s. He was born and raised in pulau ubin and had been living there his entire life! Some interesting facts that he shared with us:

#1: There are only 40 plus residents on the island these days, compared to the 4000 plus only decades ago.

#2: It is very inconvenient to get to mainland Singapore. A bumboat operator would only agree to leave when there are 12 passengers, each paying a $2 fare. At times he has to wait 2 to 3 hours for more passengers to arrive, or else he has to pay the full fare of $24 if he’s the only passenger!

#3: He used to keep a wild boar as a pet! According to him, it was a very smart animal. Even when he rode away on a motorbike, the boar would find him within 10 minutes. Haha!

At Chek Jawa, we met Ron, our tour guide who’s a volunteer there. He would be bringing us (in a group of 15) around the place and introducing us to the various plants and creatures of Chek Jawa.

Somewhere near the entrance we saw these tombstones. Apparently, they are of a Malay family, with the two big tombstones belonging to the parents and the little ones, the children. We’re not sure why the tombstones are there, or if the entire family perished together. If anyone knows the story, let me know!

This is Jejawi Tower, a 7-storey (21 meters) tall observatory tower where a panoramic view of the Chek Jawa greenery and surrounding sea can be seen. It would hold 20 people at a time. Some people in the group remarked that it seemed to sway a little when we were at the top, although I didn’t exactly feel anything.

In the mangrove area, we walked through nipah palms, better known as attap palms in Singapore. Their fruits, the attap chee, are used in ice kacang (a shaved ice dessert native to Singapore and Malaysia)! We were also pretty lucky to spot one that was in bloom!

These exposed tree roots are a common sight in mangroves. Such areas are frequently flooded and with the soil lacking in oxygen, the roots have to take in oxygen from the air instead.

Here’s a bright red little guy feasting on the fruit of a plant.

More palms! What’s interesting about these palms is that although this looks like three separate palms, it may very well be just a single one branching out into three in the soil. Things aren’t always what they seem!

These tiny little creatures are fiddler crabs. The male crabs have one particularly huge claw that serves to attract females. In the animal kingdom, size matters! (But ironically, these crabs are so tiny!)

If you are wondering how we managed to walk through the forest and the crab kingdom that easily, it’s with the help of a 1.1 kilometre long elevated boardwalk that weaves through the forest to the intertidal area.

At first glance, the boardwalk planks appear to be made from wood. But they are actually a much hardier combination of concrete and fibreglass, with simulated wood patterns engraved upon. Look closely and you would notice the wood patterns being repeated!

Remember that I mentioned tidal information is very important to Chek Jawa visitors? Well, at low tide, we could take a walk through the intertidal zone, which is a rich treasure trove of marine aquatic life. Ron informed us that a recent flood wiped out much of it and sadly, what we see now is just ten percent of what it was before. But there are several healthy signs of recovery, which is very encouraging.

These little “cigarettes” that stick out from the sand are actually homes for tube worms! We were encouraged to walk as closely together as possible to minimise the damage we do to our tiny friends living here.

This well-camouflaged crab is an elbow crab, named for the way its claws seem to have cute little elbows.

A little hermit crab has found a makeshift home in a shell! This is a reminder to us that we shouldn’t pick up so many shells from the seashores because each time we do, we are depriving these fragile little crabs of potential new homes.

Another very fragile creature is this five-legged brittle star. As its name suggests, it can break its legs off at whim, allowing an easy escape from its predators. Just as easily, it can grow new limbs too.

My, don’t these round and flat marine animals look unusual? They are sand dollars, a close relative of the sea urchin. They resemble coins!

In my previous post, I had asked all of you to guess what this crumpled pile of “fried bee hoon” is. Well, I think many of you would be surprised to know that it’s the eggs of a queer-looking sea creature…

… the sea hare! Initially I had thought that our guide said “sea hair”, which would have been an appropriate name anyway given how hairy this creature is. The bright blue spots on its hairy body really stand out!

And now, for something cute, the starfish! This little guy does a great job of burrowing into the sand.

My favourite creature of the day is this puffy cake sea star. Doesn’t it resemble a star-shaped cake or cookie?

And here’s one of my favourite ingredients in pasta — mussels! When I spotted them, they were growing on concrete pillars that were exposed only at low tide.

The last sea creature we saw was also the most uniquely-coloured one. It’s a sea cucumber in bright girlish pink! Waaa!

Boy, had this been an enriching and educational experience that was worth every insect bite and sunburn. I think I learned more about marine life during this 3-hour-long guided walk than I had ever learned in school!

As we hopped onto a bumboat that would take us back to mainland Singapore, one particular bumboat stood out. Its owner has placed potted plants on its rooftop, as a subtle testament to how Pulau Ubin is indeed an island where its nature and greenery should be preserved.

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/singapore/chek-jawa/ | 17 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Where in the World is This “Fried Bee Hoon”?

Singapore

trivia

Yeah, yeah, I know this is a pretty weird question to ask. After all, fried bee hoon is rather ubiquitous in the context of Singapore. You can find it almost everywhere! What is it exactly? Fried bee hoon, it is not. So my clever readers, can you try to guess the answers to these 2 questions:

- what in the world is this yellow squiggly thing?
- where in the world did I find it? With Deepavali (or Diwali) just around the corner, the place is more vibrant than ever, decked out in the full colours of this major Hindu festival.

Personally, I love Little India, as evident from the way I pepper this blog with frequent food reviews of several eateries in Little India. The fact that Little India is refreshingly different from other places in Singapore means that each time I drop by, it makes me feel like a tourist!

Over the past few weeks, visitors to Little India have soaked in the festive spirit of Deepavali. They can shop at the bustling Deepavali festival market or admire the beautiful street light up.

The Deepavali festival village is a month-long bazaar set up for the occasion, featuring many stalls peddling Indian wares and snacks.

These bright pink Indian snacks are good examples of the colourful Indian cuisine. It is made from milk and tastes sweet and creamy. You can find this in many Indian coffee shops. I have tried a number of Indian snacks and this milk snack is my favourite by far.

Statue of vishnu, the blue-skinned Hindu god with four arms.

Cute miniature bicycles made with movable parts.

Wood carved elephants and an assortment of other animals.

Here’s a stall that sells Indian clothes, one of the many at the bazaar and throughout Little India.

Shiny Indian bangles in a multitude of colours! They depict a pretty accurate scene of the Singapore street life more than a century ago. For example, there are junks docked at the quay and coolies unloading goods from them.

Over here, a group of coolies are taking a break and enjoying a game by the river.

A fruit seller with his customer. Even the tiny fruits he’s selling can be clearly identified! Apples, pineapples, oranges, bananas, watermelons.

From a second-level shophouse, tiny people hang out their clothes to dry on bamboo sticks. The signboards are also printed with actual names of the shops! Now, that’s attention to detail!

Bull carriages on the streets.

Old profession of ear-cleaning. “stick no bill” on the walls, but people stick them anyway.

Isn’t this model fascinating? There is just so much to see. Whichever part of it that your eyes may lead, there is bound to be something to look at. I think they even add in new human figurines once in a while. While we were there, a group of photographers came in remarking that there’s a new figurine in there!

So, can anyone guess where I found this interesting miniature model? I’m dying to just reveal the answer right here, right now, simply because I wish you guys would go take a look at it! But making you guess is way more fun! Haha!

View the original article and join the discussion at:
http://sparklette.net/travel/singapore/where-in-the-world-is-this-miniature-model/ | 22 comments

Like on Facebook | Follow on Twitter | Download free iPhone app

© 2011 Sparklette.net

Where in the World is This Signage?

Singapore

trivia

Check out this beautiful neon signage!
