Sony: Win $100,000 to Realise Your Dream
“You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.”
In a memorable scene from The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith utters this line to his son. He portrays Christopher Gardner, a man who endured many hardships but through sheer determination, realised his dream. He went from being homeless to starting his own stock brokerage firm. Today, he is a millionaire. True story.
Do you have a dream?
Sony is sponsoring S$100,000 to realise your dream through the make-dot-believe campaign. According to Sony, make.believe stands for the power of their creativity and ability to turn ideas into reality, and the belief that anything you can imagine, you can make real.
make = action, do, build and design
believe = spirit, think, imagine and dream
dot = The place where great things begin. It is where inspiration meets creativity, where creativity meets reality.
make.believe unites designers and engineers, hardware and software, electronics and entertainment, and Sony and consumers.

Last year, I realised a dream by finally establishing my own web design firm by the age of 25. Being able to carve a living solely from my own ability and independence is beyond fulfilling. In a small way, I feel I have pursued happiness and succeeded.
For those of you that have yet to make your first step, I encourage you to do so. Never mind the naysayers; they will always be there. This harkens back to the first line of this post. To realise a dream, all it really takes is passion and belief in oneself.
What is your dream? Have you fulfilled it? Share your comments!

A very inspiring quote to start this post. I love the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”, it’s up there with “The Shawshank Redemption” when it comes to the topic of determination, inspiration and never giving up!
.. and regarding the naysayers and ‘dream-stealers’, I always remember a story from one of my mentors. It goes like this..
–> 10 frogs were at the bottom of a big bucket. All wanted to jump out, climb to the top and escape, but kept falling back in. One frog started climbing, and got higher and higher … all other 9 frogs kept on saying “you cant make it, stop wasting your time, come back down”. However, that 1 frog made it to the top of the bucket and finally escaped to freedom.
How did that 1 frog do it and the other 9 frogs fail?
That 1 frog was DEAF! He couldn’t hear the naysayers and their negative comments…
As you rightly mentioned “To realise a dream, all it really takes is passion and belief in oneself.”

Whoa! You just mentioned my all-time #1 and #2 favourite movies from all genres! Are those your faves, too? I must have seen Shawshank at least a dozen times, but each time I still enjoy it like it’s a brand new movie. These remarkable stories of human will and triumph are awe-inspiring and powerful, and are the 2 movies I think everyone need to watch at least once.
Thanks for sharing that story of the frog in the well. The message is so simple but true. I must admit I may have been one of those naysayers myself before. But these days I try to be encouraging to anyone and everyone. It’s just not right to tell someone he can’t do something (unless it’s downright stupid or wrong).
The only person who can truly say you can or can’t is oneself.

I watched Shawshank Redemption back in 1996 and I still remember the movie as clear as yesterday. So many memorable scenes and lessons.
Hmm.. regarding your last sentence,
Here’s a quote from Henry Ford, “whether you can, or you can’t.. either way, you are correct”
One’s beliefs will lead to their action, leading to their results. It all starts from the mind :)

My dream is to travel around the world. Somehow I doubt Sony would sponsor that ;)

I think travel journalists and TV hosts are paid to do that. Did you try out for the “Best job in the world” last year? Not exactly travelling around the world, but close :)
