Pontian Wanton Mee – Me Wants Wanton Mee

I’m not exactly a fan of noodle dishes. But recently, a colleague introduced me to the famous Pontian Wanton Mee and I was sold! Since then, we’ve been having this colourful dish at least once a week! wanton mee is a type of Chinese dish with noodles (mee) and dumplings (wanton).

Pontian Wanton Mee, Singapore

The Pontian Wanton Mee stall has a long history dating back 60 years. They have a few branches all over Singapore at various hawker centres and food centres.

At lunchtime, there would always be a long queue forming in front of the stall for their handmade wanton mee. Yes, the dumplings are handmade. Even the mee itself is handmade. Check it out!

Rating:

Colourful! On the first taste, I was won over by the sweet and spicy sauce consisting of both chilli sauce and ketchup that lend it much flavour. The noodles are firm, springy and not the least bit soggy. In fact, the mee is so good, I think you can just have it alone! That might also explain why the other ingredients are always given in small portions…

Deep-fried wanton

…such as the deep-fried wanton. I do really like the wanton, but feel that they are really baby-sized. Bigger wanton would be far more satisfying!

Wanton in soup

There’s boiled wanton in the tasty soup too. Again, baby-sized, but yummy too.

The best way to eat this dish is to eat it really slowly, savouring the tasty sauce bit by bit. Heck, I’m gonna have it again tomorrow!

This stall is located outside HDB Hub, it seems?

I have been visiting Toa Payoh almost every Thu evening because of my music theory lessons, but I guess I should venture beyond HDB Hub….

coincidentally, i just had this for dinner last nite at bedok interchange hawker centre. haha…

it was alright only, to me. the noodles were good, i liked it that the fried wanton didnt soften too quickly. but i thought the sauce was too salty, masking the taste of everything else. the charsiew was too bland for my taste.

There was one point in my life where I ate Wanton Mee for lunch every single day without getting tired of it. The stall that sold it was that good; too bad they somehow went out of business two years back, so I’m Wanton-free for 2 years now: the other stalls near where I live sold rip-offs!

I tried the Pontian wanton mee at Heeren, you know that now defunt Graffiti cafe? Unfortunately I didn’t like it as I found it a tad too sweet. I prefer my wanton mee to be a little spicy…the best that I have eaten so far was in school!
PS: do you realised that wanton mee is always serve in such small portions? I always take two bowls in one go!

There is one at Redhmill hawker centre but wasnt that nice. I have tried Heeren’s too and its better. Wanton Mee is one of my favourite local dishes. If you do not mind travelling, there is one at Telok Blangah Heights and their wanton mee is really nice. However must wait till the uncle is cooking. hahaz!!

The wanton mee at Jalan Ah Lor in KL is fantastic too! I realised how much I love wanton mee when I read your post *slurps* I usually take mine at the Amoy St Food Centre if I am free to make a trip down.

I love wanton mee. Its one of my favourite kind of noodles. Must try to Pontian Wanton Mee of Sparklette fame. The one at Old Airport Road with the fancy computerised queue number isn’t too bad, as well as Kok Kee at Lavendar Food Square. Personally, I prefer the wantons to be boiled rather than fried.

it’s amazing tt i’ve not tried the pontian wanton mee despite having lived in tp all my life, though the coffeeshop is considered relatively new compared to the years i’ve lived there. instead i had a rather unpleasant experience dining at the sarawak kolo mee shop at blk 190 inside the row of shops facing ya kun. it was dry n bland n i think i’d rather have maggi mee instead. definitely not value for money as well.

    Heys,

There’s this Parklane Wantan Mee too. I believe it’s at IOI plaza, but the one at Parklane Shopping Mall isn’t too bad too.
