Dumpling Festival is just around the corner. Have you indulged in your favourite leaf-wrapped rice treat yet?
Like its Chinese cousin – the mooncake, the rice dumpling makes a special appearance during this time of the year in various flavours and forms. While some of us go for the traditional Nyonya dumpling, many restaurants whip up special creations filled with a hefty amount of varied ingredients.
Year after year, my personal favourite dumpling comes from Szechuan Court of Fairmont Singapore, or more specifically, the Gongbao chicken dumpling.

It’s very easy for spicy food fans to fall in love with the Gongbao chicken dumpling at the very first bite. This dumpling packs an explosive punch with its fiery Szechuan peppercorns, hot chilli padi, juicy marinated diced chicken and crunchy roasted peanuts tucked within moist glutinous rice. Unlike last year, the Gongbao chicken dumpling returns in a smaller 600g offering this time round – and still tastes as good.
S$22++/600g
As for the organic brown rice vegetarian dumpling, the health-conscious can enjoy this luscious morsel without feeling guilty. This healthier option combines vegetarian smoked duck and crispy fragrant chicken, along with Japanese flower mushrooms and gingko nuts that fill the centre.
S$288++/kg
For a real lavish treat, the Szechuan Court premium dumpling may just hit the spot. Alaskan king crab meat, giant dried scallops, premium Matsutake mushroom, African abalone and foie gras are just some of premium ingredients you will find in it, tossed with a sauce reminiscent of the Singapore chilli crab as the final touch.
The dumplings are available at Szechuan Court until June 12, 2012.
