Hawt Kevin with His Hawt Pocket PDA [Video]
(don’t mind me. “hawt” or “hot” is my pet word of the week.)
Many of my blog readers (and their dogs too) must have at least heard of Kevin lim and his blog at theory.isthereason. I love hanging out with him because he’s hawt, and the fact that each time we hang out, he lets me play with his, er, equipment.
I have played with his Sony vaio ux230p (an ultra-portable micro pc) and Sony cybershot m2 (a hybrid digital camera cum video recorder). That camera’s hawt! So hawt that when I try borrowing it, he would protectively say “don’t break it hor!”
Over dinner recently, he showed me his newest gadget – pocket pda. Yeah, that’s the name AND brand of this made-in-china device. Normally, I wouldn’t pay much attention to products from China. But my, this one’s hawt!
Watch this video of hawt Kevin introducing the 3 main motion sensor functions of his hawt pocket pda to see how hawt it is (and him too). I’ll bet you wanna buy one after this!
In the video, Kevin does a walk-through on the 3 main motion sensor functions of this pda phone:
- air sign – enter some text (either Chinese or English) and it would appear along the side LED panel of the phone as you wave the phone! This is motion-activated so only at a certain speed can the text be seen. Great for clubbers and deaf people! In the video, Kevin demonstrates with the word “BYE” and a smiley face. Cool!
- portrait/landscape auto detection – when viewing a video in portrait mode, try rotating the phone to landscape mode. The motion sensor would detect the change in orientation and automatically rotate the video 90 degrees – just like the Apple iPhone! Gawd, that’s a bloody hawt feature.
- simulated dice – simply shake the phone, and the on-screen animated dice would roll with actual sounds of dice-rolling! You can toggle the number of dice too. Very useful for card games. Now no one has to worry about losing his dice!

Some other uber-cool (and hawt) features of this phone:
- video display ID – when a friend calls, have a video play instead of the usual caller photo display.
- neon lights alert – cool light effects along the side LED panel when someone calls or a message arrives.
- photo card/neoprint – cute preset frames and stamps to add to photos, much like the actual Japanese photo card and neoprint machines!
- photo artist – image-editing application that allows the toggling of brightness, contrast, hue and various other colour settings of pictures.
- car racing/obstacle game – a game that makes use of the motion sensor. Tilt or turn the phone to steer the car or “hop” over obstacles!
- english-chinese translator – key in anything in English and it’ll be translated to Chinese. ’nuff said.
- health functions – bmi calculator and pink schedule (for the ladehz)
- pedometer – yet another motion sensor feature that detects the number of steps you walk/run
- it’s nice – a smiley face appears each time you execute a command. This phone is nice!
- cute GUI – I especially like the cute on-screen keypad and little icons.
- small form factor – for a pda phone that is jam-packed with so many features, it sure is small and lightweight.
Wow, that’s hawt! Certainly one of the most interesting gadgets I’ve seen in a long while! I just might get one too! Someone convince Kevin to sell his to me cheap please, before he leaves for buffalo!

It’s not the PDA. It’s NOT the PDA! It’s the other PDA…

What? How many PDAs are there?

My friend showed me this phone early last year. He bought it from China – nope, he doesn’t use it as his primary phone either. Its cool though…

It’s a cute phone that is quite suitable for girls. Feels small and lightweight in the hand. And did I mention that it’s very entertaining too?

That’s a cool video! Like that people were moving in and out of the frame, serving food, asking for chairs and so forth. I’m pretty sure the environment was pretty noisy yet could still hear you and Kelvin clearly.
Haven’t seen Kelvin since I first met him at the Second Life talk at The Idea Factory a few months back, so it’s good to see him being his animated self. He just lights up and goes all enthusiastic when it comes to technology. Very fun.
You guys should start a vLog series of hardware reviews while in crowded, public places. Like while walking down Orchard Road, or waiting in a taxi stand.

Yeah! Those little interruptions here and there only made the video seem more “real”. We were waiting for our pasta to arrive when we did the recording.
Kevin has been finding people to do all sorts of video collaborations with him. But I’m simply too camera-shy (while he’s a cam whore).

Yep! That “real” feeling is key. Would love to see more reviews like that. Heh. Kelvin didn’t even miss a beat with the interruptions, he was just “yeah sure!” that continued on with what he was saying.
Funny. From what I’ve read so far, you didn’t strike me as being camera-shy per se Veron. I did notice there being a lack of pictures of yourself here but didn’t put the two and two together.
Well you can just be the camerawoman and ask the questions, while Kelvin does all the reviewing and talking :)

Gasp Veron, didn’t think you’d actually put up the video, but thanks. :P
I was just telling Veron how bloggers in other countries collaborate by doing a lots of cross-over blogging (appearing on each other’s blogs), while Singaporean bloggers haven’t seem to have gotten around it, despite being in a small country where it’s easy to meet up.
Just start by calling up your favorite bloggers, chit-chat and when inspiration hits you, record something silly like singing (or lipdubbing) or geeking it out with some tech toy.
Sayonara y’all!

BTW, I’ve just added more photos of the other China phones I mentioned, including the candybar phones for girls, the larger iPhone clone which supports two active SIM cards and close-ups of the Pocket PDA phone featured in the video :)

Thanks Kevin. I’ve added a photo to my post too.
One of these days I should really head down to Sim Lim Square to check out those cheap China phones! Time to get me a pink one in case LG decides to take back the Shine phone.

Nice blog Veron, very pretty, interesting and fun. I’m just wondering, why do we need cell pones that play videos or have games? I rarely even turn my cell phone on, much less answer it. I did have a Blackberry and admit I was pretty addicted to it for business. Hmmmm, I will have to think this through a bit. I still don’t have an Ipod or even know how to download music.

Thanks!
For some people, mobile phones are also their organiser, entertainment unit, video recorder, camera all rolled into one. It’s just more convenient carrying a single device around. I know of guys who swear by a certain Sony Ericsson phone model that takes excellent pictures so they don’t have to carry an additional camera with them.
All mobile phones share the more rudimentary functions of making calls and sending/receiving SMS. Having the various extra functions help differentiate one mobile phone from the next.

Veron, any idea of the connectivity options that PDA phone offers ? (e.g. bluetooth, wifi etc) Been looking around for a PDA phone. Thanks.

Kevin and I were searching high and low for the connectivity functions. We only found GPRS! Pretty sure there isn’t bluetooth or wi-fi.

I’m not sure if this is the correct place to ask but, can we install a different OS in this phone? If it’s possible … it will be POWER!

Ok… here’s the deal:
There are a million and one cool PDA / Smartphones out there which have more functionality and “smart” ideas than iPhone. Many of which are cooler and more appealing. That’s an undeniable fact. So to me – they all look the same and its kinda pointless to say one’s better than the other.
At the end of the day, the PDA / Smartphone must fit your lifestyle and way you use technology. What’s right for me, won’t exactly be the right one for you for various reasons. If we all go for the same phone, then the world would be a pretty boring place.
Still… i want an iPhone – cos i’m a Mac Fanboy! :D

I did some digging on the net.
That PDA is Kifung (奇锋)S108.
It has a max external mem. limit of 512MB.
(It says external T-flash mem. Can anyone tell me what’s T-flash ?)
Dual band. Has WAP and GPRS only.
What a pity no Wifi.
Otherwise for only $200+, it’s really cheap and neat.
